I enjoyed the fact that you didn't have to think, but could just go on and read the next in the series. I did not get to this one, though. Did you read the first two in the series?"

Yes, I did read the first two Bookman books. It's been a while, though, so I may have to take a chapter or two to get remember who's who! I always read series in order (just always have) because I like character development. I love Aaron Elkins' mysteries (Dying on the Vine is #17 in the series) about a forensic anthropologist. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared is one I've been hearing about lately.

Interesting - I haven't read Anne Rice in around 20 years. How is this series?

Sera | 1325 comments I just started A Hundred Flowers by Gail Tsukiyama on audio. It's off to an interesting start.

I liked the first one, took me a little but to get into it but once I did I enjoyed it & this one has me sucked right in.....they are a quick read

message 1706: by Paulette (new)

Paulette I haven't read Ann Rice in about 20 years also. She did have some really good books like Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat and then every books she wrote just got worse and worse until I stopped reading anything she wrote. Has she gotten any better?

message 1707: by Kate (new)

isn't that all kind of relative? LOL

I have read some of her books, not all. I loved the witch books & 2 stand alone books (Cry To Heaven & The Feast of all Saints) are among my favorite books, I never read the phase of religious books she went thru, although this series does have angels & heaven & hell in them...as far as if she has gotten "better", I can't answer that...I like what I am reading at the moment....

Kate - this made my 'best of' list for 2012. I loved his writing (reminded me of Yates) and I am definitely going to read more by him. I will be interested to hear what you think once you finisdh.

I read Independence Day by Richard Ford and didn't really care for it. I got really bored with the middle-aged white guy angst. Haven't even put Canada on my TBR list for fear it was more of the same, but it has made so many "best of 2012" lists that I've been rethinking.

message 1711: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylrussell) I'm reading So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading It's a fun, quick read. It was published in 2003, so it's a little dated with the cultural references, but I'm enjoying it.

message 1712: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm reading Woodsburner by John Pipkin and The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon .

I am pleased to hear this, because I keep seeing mixed reviews. It looks to be a book that I would enjoy, but then I see that people are lukewarm about it.

message 1714: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I dropped Woodsburner by John Pipkin as I just couldn't get interested in it, but have started Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver instead.

Is it available in the US now, Lynn?

Sera | 1325 comments I just started The Dog Stars on audio this morning.

message 1725: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Betsy wrote: "Is it a Harry Hole?"

Yes, it is! (And it's the first in the series AND it tells you from the start about the mispronunciation of his name that many fall into! At one point, Harry himself does the pronunciation, so if you want to say it correctly you can find out how. Speaking a small bit of Norwegian myself, I knew how off the English pronunciation was, but everyone seems to find it funny.)

LynnB Sera wrote: "Is it available in the US now, Lynn?"

Yes, it just came out recently in hardback. I'm about 1/2 way through it. In some ways you can tell it's the first book of the series, and it's not quite as well written, but it's still good!!

message 1727: by Sera (new)

I listened to a podcast interview with Jo Nesbo and learned how to pronounce both his name and Harry's name. But if you use the correct pronunciation, no one knows what you're talking about.

I listened to this one on audio, too. The material is interesting, but the reader, I agree - not so good. Another good reason why authors shouldn't read their own material on audio :)

The version I'm listening to is not the author reading.

I am probably wrong, Betsy, which makes the actual reader even more disappointing now.
