Sera, I started reading
The Woman in White, I think in January, and even though I was enjoying the story, I stopped reading it. How is it going for you???

message 1353: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I'm not that far in. It's my lunch time read at work so I can't read too much each day nor every day, but so far I am liking it. How far in it were you when you stopped?

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I started Island Of Vice Theodore Roosevelt's Doomed Quest To Clean Up Sin Loving New York by Richard Zacks for my F2F book group. My husband and I have nicknamed it Island of Mice, which has no relation to the content as far as I know, but gets us giggling every time we say it.

Somewhere (Facebook?) I saw "My husband has found 38 shades of gray."

Almost as funny as SNL's skit on the book last night.

Cathy | 482 comments Betsy wrote: "I'm starting The Distant Hours by Kate Morton tonight."

I did like this one and loved The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton . Kate Morton is such a good writer of secrets and mysteries interwoven in such a lovely way that is so engaging. Check out her website "katemorton.com. It has interviews about her books and states that "The Distant Hours" on release this past March in Spain went right to number one. A new book is due out the end of this year. I need to go back and read The House at Riverton by Kate Morton . Another good and similar type of read is The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters . Have you read any other Morton books or this one by Sarah Waters?

I haven't read any other Morton, but I did read Little Stranger and loved it. Thought I had tried another of hers too, but none of the descriptions are sounding familiar, so must not have.

message 1373: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I put Morton on hold for a bit because I own that one and was able to get The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock from the downloadable library and started that.

message 1376: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Starting We the Animals by Justin Torres . I've heard lots of good things about this one. Sera, was it you who only gave it one star? What didn't you like about it?

message 1377: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Hi, Betsy.

I thought that it was foul and without merit. I felt that the author was trying to be both hip and high brow with his approach to this book, both of which failed to resonate with me. I realize that I am having an issue with certain present day novelists who feel that shock value and the heinous acts of people make for good storytelling. To me, it just shows a lack of creativity.

My apologies to anyone who reads and enjoy this type of writing and storytelling; I understand that there is an audience for these types of books, and my goal isn't to come off as judgmental. It's just not my cuppa. We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver is a horrifying novel and bad (very bad) things happen, but the writing is superb, and there is actual context so that the reader can try to make sense of the story and why the characters feel and act the way in which they do. After reading this book, I felt so many emotions that I am still working through my feelings a week later. After reading We the Animals by Justin Torres , I felt angry and cheated. Mercifully, it was short and borrowed from the library.

Nevertheless, I hope that you enjoy the book, Betsy. I would love to hear your thoughts when you are finished. Maybe you can change my perspective on this one :)

I can see what you are saying. It wasn't my immediate reaction, but it is on that borderline for me (after reading about half). I'll let you know when I am done. I'll post under the actual book discussion so we don't spoil it for a nyone else who might read it.

Just finished reading this one -- intriguing plot, with an interesting venture into topics such as nature vs nurture and other psychological issues, if you choose to pursue them.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I'm in Bermuda for 6 days. My favorite part of getting ready for vacation is picking out which books to take. I brought a mix of electronic books and traditional. I'm back into The Distant Hours by Kate Morton and am just starting The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje because I got from the library. Other traveling companions: Flower Net (Red Princess, #1) by Lisa See , The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender , Blacklands by Belinda Bauer , Radio Shangri-La What I Learned in the Happiest Kingdom on Earth by Lisa Napoli , and The Partly Cloudy Patriot by Sarah Vowell . And that's just the paper ones.
