Becky (beckymurr) trying to finish up Angel Time (The Songs of the Seraphim, #1) by Anne Rice

message 1161: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments As the year draws to a close I felt it was appropriate to end the year with The Sense of An Ending by Julian Barnes , based on the title and not the content of this story.

message 1162: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm starting 2012 by finally reading the chunkster The Pillars of the Earth (The Pillars of the Earth, #1) by Ken Follett . Added to that, I'm doing a comfort-read of An Irish Country Christmas by Patrick Taylor .

I just finished this one myself.

Victoria (vicki_c) I was just barely started with Death in the City of Light The Serial Killer of Occupied Paris by David King (which seems a slow go - I am 25% done) when Zone One by Colson Whitehead became available from my library e-book holds last night, so I have dived into that instead.

Thanks, Katz! I haven't started it yet, but I am looking forward to it. Interesting how it's become a sort of "love it" or "hate it" kind of book. I can see which camp you are in :)

I got Death... for my husband for Christmas. He's a real WWII history buff. I also was hoping it might read like Devil in the White City, but it doesn't sound like it from your initial reaction.

It definitely is similar to Devil in the White City, Betsy, it just wasn't "grabbing" me right off the bat in the same way. And it's a long book too - I think it's 500 pages? Or 400-something? The best WWII book I have read recently was The Invisible Bridge.

How did you like it? I really liked it and it had me looking back for clues in the story as this mystery on aging, memory, and life, in general, came to a close. Lots of interesting things to reflect on. I thought it was a great book to end the year on. Any thoughts you would like to share I would love to hear them.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I started One Good Dog by Susan Wilson for my F2F book group and also Deadly Spin An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR Is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans by Wendell Potter on audio. I like a good conspiracy theory and I've long believed the health insurance companies are evil incarnate.

message 1183: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm still reading The Pillars of the Earth (The Pillars of the Earth, #1) by Ken Follett and I've added Fifth Avenue, 5 00 AM Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and The Dawn of the Modern Woman by Sam Wasson . Quite a contrast!

message 1184: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Pillars is one of my favorite books. I guess it gets critically panned, but I really enjoyed it. I've read it twice!

Even after reading both Pillars and World without end, I wasn't ready to leave Kingsbridge!

Patti | 137 comments Just started The Snowman (Harry Hole, #7) by Jo Nesbø I think it is going to be a good read. I have been reading Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell a lot, so think this will be just as good.

message 1190: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Zone One by Colson Whitehead - abandoned about 1/3 of the way through. I knew it wasn't for me when I felt I had been absolutely slogging through it and was only on page 80 or so out of under 300 pages.

I seem to be having trouble finding anything to my liking in 2012!
