I thought Faith: A Novel was a really good book."

I marked it based on interest, and then it was available at the library so I figured that I would pick it up. I've only read the first chapter but found it to be very good.

Becky (beckymurr) started Day After Night Day After Night by Anita Diamant trying to catch up on some already owned books for a challenge...

message 1103: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) So sad to say that Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese did not happen. Or Blackout (All Clear, #1) by Connie Willis , although I got a bit further in that (100 pages). Both came/are coming due at the library and I won't be able to finish. I'm still learning the balance of what to put on my hold list @ the library - all 3 became available within 24 hours!

On some crazy whim, I bought Raven The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People by Tim Reiterman last night and started that. I read a 1978 Rolling Stone article on Longreads on Jonestown and it just sparked more interest. ALthough I do know a bit about it already from news stories / TV movie / etc.

Oh Jim Jones, what a story that must be....went through a stage where I found I could not get enough of his tale, I was totally fascinated with it all...

Oh, man, Lynn, are you dusting off cobwebs with that title. How many decades ago did I read that one. Don't answer that!

Ha! No kidding! I think I bought my copy in about 1974 or so. "Dusting off" is not a misnomer!

Susan,
I just had to tell you how much I like your thumbprint picture. It makes me laugh every time.
Isn't that the episode with William Holden where she sets her fake nose on fire?

I hadn't heard of the book, but the reviews look very good. I love historical fiction, so I'm adding to my TBR list.

That is on my list as well. I've never read The Scarlet Letter (not that I remember anyway), but this story obviously has some thematic similarities, I guess?

I just got When She Woke by Hillary Jordan from the library this afternoon. I'll be starting it later this week.

LynnB I've just started No One is Here Except All of Us by Ramona Ausubel . I got an ARC copy from the ReadingGroupGuides.com contest, the book is due out in February. It's set in Romania, 1939, and the premise of the story looks pretty interesting.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I started both hard copy and audio books yesterday. I'm reading Heroic Measures A Novel by Jill Ciment which has been on my TBR pile for a dog's age (pun intended) and I'm listening to This Book Is Overdue! How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All by Marilyn Johnson which so far is a delightful book on why it is still so important to have librarians even in the Google age.

Can't wait to hear how you like the Ebert one. I follow him on Twitter and have seen his TED talk and he is a fascinating man.

Cathy | 482 comments Have you ever wonder what happened to Timothy Cratchit, aka Tiny Tim? Well, wonder no more....I have just begun the BBC audio production Mr. Timothy by Louis Bayard by Louis Bayard. The story starts with Tiny Tim in his 20's. A book just in time for the holidays. One of my all time favorite renditions of "The Christmas Carol" from my childhood is the animated "Mister Magoo's Christmas Carol". Any others with fond memories of this one?

I loved Mr. Magoo in general, but this particular performance was a tour de force for him! I also enjoyed this book. I've read at least two of Bayard's books and like the classic character revisited approach. The other one I read featured Edgar Allen Poe as a West Point Cadet.

Betsy,

My first outing with Bayard was just recently with our mystery bookclub reading just the book you mention... The Pale Blue Eye by Louis Bayard . I also liked it. It read a little more like literary fiction and I loved the classic characters. Both of these facts have made me a fan of this newly discovered author.

well, very rarely do I start & then not finish a book but I have been reading so many good, enjoyable books I just can't waste my time on ones I can't get into. I was on pg 50 & just could not continue this one....so I just started ...
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill ....much better!!

message 1145: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) So I finished When She Woke by Hillary Jordan (excellent) and got The Warmth of Other Suns The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson from the library, but I'm not so sure about it. I had started it before - or read the Kindle preview, and didn't feel compelled to buy it.

In the meantime, I just bought a few Kindle books that were on my wish list, but think I will give Wilkerson another chance while I have it checked out of the library.

Cathy | 482 comments I loved Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch on audiobook this year and found Galore by Michael Crummey in the library for audio download. It seemed this one had some similar themes of fantasy, and of course the enticer picture of the whale on the cover. I loved Carol Birch's story of Jamrach on the whaling ship. I thought this story set in Newfoundland would possess some of the same magical elements of Carol Birch's excellent tale, or at least I can hope so. Are there any readers of "Galore" that would like to comment as I begin this audio journey?

message 1147: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments Also, I begin Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indriðason , a crime mystery with a good review and a cool dust cover. A number two book, but available at the library. A review inside the cover, states "Now Iceland has its own Mankell". This is my year end salute to my excellent vacation in Iceland in October (wishing I was soaking in the Blue Lagoon as winter starts to roll in here in PA).

message 1148: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Ditched The Warmth of Other Suns The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson . Started and finished Headhunters by Jo Nesbo since then ( guess that's for the Finished thread.). Today I started another Lehane Sacred (Kenzie & Gennaro #3) by Dennis Lehane . I'm in my Dennis Lehane period apparently.
