Sera | 1325 comments I started Ready Player One by Ernest Cline today on audio. It is very cool. If the rest of the book is like the first few chapters, this one could be my favorite book of year.

message 1016: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I just started (although 1/2 done already) Mystic River. Very good. This is my 2nd Lehane book, I have just discovered him. I did see the movie of this a long time ago, but I find I'm not remembering a lot of the details, and the book is better.

Great book - the movie adaptation tracks the book well. Glad to hear that you are enjoying it.

Enjoy your time away and don't forget to soak up some sun and fun along with some good reads!

Finally finished the first 32 pages in State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. Highly recommended by friends and so far, pretty good.

message 1023: by Barb (new)

Barb I couldn't get into The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh , so I returned it to the library for the next person on the Holds list. I'll probably try it again at another point in time, perhaps when there's no such a long waiting list for the book. In the meantime, I started When She Woke by Hillary Jordan . I'm only about 50 pages into it, but it's already got me hooked!

Good to hear. It's the January group read for one of my F2F book clubs. We're reading it in addition to The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne .

message 1025: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Motto | 450 comments I went to the library this morning and Eureka!, they had several books I've really been wanting to read including The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen and The Barbarian Nurseries A Novel by Héctor Tobar and several others as well. I'm a tingle just contemplating which one to read first. And from reading Lisa's post about the new issue of bookmarks, I also have that to look forward to. Can't wait.

I don't know anything about it either but keep us posted because it has appeared on some notable lists.

message 1029: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I've started Auschwitz A Doctor's Eyewitness Account by Miklos Nyiszli for my November F2F group. I may have to pick up something really light to break up the really depressing content.

message 1030: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm reading Gloryland A Novel by Shelton Johnson which I hadn't heard about, but just picked up at my local indie bookstore. It's about a black man born in 1863 who, when he grows up, heads north and west, joins the US Cavalry, fights the Indians and in the Philippines -- and eventually is sent to guard the new Yosemite National Park. Very good and interesting. It has some viewpoints I hadn't thought about before. Could be a very good book club book. The author is a ranger at Yosemite.

message 1031: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I just started Horns by Joe Hill by Joe Hill. It's quite good so far.

message 1032: by Cathy (new)

message 1033: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I started listening to Crocodile on the Sandbank (An Amelia Peabody Mystery, #1) by Elizabeth Peters on my 3 hr ride (each way) to my mom's this past weekend. I don't read a lot of cozy mysteries and this reminded me why. I will finish it, but probably won't race to read another by the author even though there are some interesting characters.

message 1034: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I just started Confessions (Private, #4) by Kate Brian by Kate Brian. I read a bit of YA now and then, and I enjoy this series set in a New England private school.

message 1035: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I found this book in my Kindle library and couldn't figure out how it got there, then I read somewhere else that it had been a free Kindle book on Amazon. I guess I bought it then! Anyway ...

I just started Hostile Witness by Rebecca Forster Hostile Witness. I'm only about 40 pages in - it is definitely keeping my attention. I don't think it's going to win any prizes or anything and could use a better editor/proofreader, but hey, it was free. Seems like your typical legal pot-boiler type novel - entertaining but probably nothing of substance.

It's rare, but I'm changing my mind. As I've gotten further along, I've enjoyed it more and have begun to be somewhat attached to the characters.

I recently downloaded this to my Nook, so I'll be anxious to hear what you think about it. Not sure how long it will take me to get to it.

message 1040: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I've just started The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop by Lewis Buzbee which, so far, I like very much! A book-lovers book.

message 1041: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I just started The Girl Who Played With Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson today. I can't believe that it's taken me this long to get to the second book in this series. I read the first one as soon as it was published. Seriously - where does time go?

message 1042: by Donna (new)

Donna (drspoon) I just started Cutting for Stonea few days ago for my book group.

I read this on my kindle last year and loved the magical elements in this story. It is the only book I have read by this author, but hope to read another one day. Glad to hear you are enjoying it.
