Cathy | 482 comments I started Zeitoun by Dave Eggers with my son this afternoon. We are reading it aloud together as the first book in his summer reading requirements. I am hoping the story appeals to him to keep him engaged. All the positive feedback from this group makes it feel like it will be a successful project and great, well-spent mother and son time together.

Oh boy LOL, I guess I will add it to my list!! I did love her werewolf guy....

Laurie (laurielh) | 93 comments I just picked up 4 books from the library and don't know which one to read first -- any comments on these will be appreciated:
Corrag Corrag by Susan Fletcher
Proust and the squid : the story and science of the reading brain Proust and the Squid The Story and Science of the Reading Brain by Maryanne Wolf
The weird sisters The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
We, the drowned We, the Drowned by Carsten Jensen
I'm a slow reader, so I don't know why I checked out all 4 -- but I get so excited about reading each one that I can't bear to leave the library without them!

I read The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown and liked it. It's a quick, light read, so it may be a good book to start first.

I'm not familiar with any of these works, so unfortunately, I'm not much help here. I do, however, completely understand about checking out too many books :)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments Anybody know any good books on learning to speed read? It sounds like several of us could benefit from that skill. Hmmm...........maybe it would be a good group read.

message 810: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I read a speed reading book some years ago. It's not that difficult to learn, but I found that it took away some of the pleasure from reading, because the focus is on comprehension and not the "feeling" that one gets from the story, if that makes sense.

I've also found that my reading speed naturually continues to increase over time, which is interesting to me.

Laurie,
I loved Corrag I read it late April/early May. Here were my posted comments on this group's site in the finished book section: "I really enjoyed Corrag. I knew little of this book when I picked it up at the library. It was written in a very lyrical manner and it's hidden beauty continued to be revealed as the lifestory of Corrag is told by her.

Corrag, a gentle and kind imprisoned woman, has a life possessing many bittersweet memories. The reader is transported to Scotland and the beauty of this land as she retells her story and her knowledge of the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692.

I really loved this one and I am sure I will be buying a copy for my personal bookshelf."

It was good historical fiction and I gave it a 5-star rating and was very touched by the retelling of Corrag's life. I highly recommend it.

message 813: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I started Attachments by Rainbow Rowell and I am really, really loving it. I can already tell you that this will be another top pick for 2011 from me. It is smart, witty, and tons of fun. I have about 50 pages to go, but I can give you a wholehearted recommendation.

Linda | 1693 comments Started listening to Kay Scarpetta #9 - Point Of Origin (Kay Scarpetta, #9) by Patricia Cornwell . Different narrator that I've heard before took me a little to get used to.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments I'm reading Doc A Novel by Mary Doria Russell and next up to bat is Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks , both library ebooks.

Donna (drspoon) I just finished Among Others Among Others by Jo Walton . Morwenna is a precocious, 15 year old living in Wales and England in 1979 whose passion for reading, especially SF/F books helps her to forge social connections and move beyond a family tragedy. My favorite book so far this year! I just started Zoo City Zoo City by Lauren Beukes and Unbroken Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand

Yay! I'm so happy for you. Which Nook did you get? I have the original with 3G and WiFi, but I have been drooling over the new "baby" Nook. It is so light and the 2 month battery life is a huge plus for me.

Donna, I also finished Among Others by Jo Walton this week. It was a delightful book! I need to post my review in the group read folder.

I know you are new to the Bookmarks group. Welcome! If you look over the discussion board you will notice that we have set up folders for each issue of Bookmarks to discuss the books reviewed in that issue. If you don't see a thread started for a book, feel free to open a thread for discussion. We also have a group reads folder. I'd love for you to discuss your impression of Among Others in our group read thread for the book. Again, welcome to the group and I look forward to hearing more from you.

By the time I made the decision to buy, I kept hearing that the new one was due to be released soon, so I waited and got the new one. I know it's a bit smaller than the original, but having never used the original, I'm not sure what else is different.

I had never heard of Joseph Finder until just today when I was browsing at a library book sale. What a coincidence that you started this book today.

message 830: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Well, I was very much enjoying Howards End is on the Landing A Year of Reading from Home by Susan Hill which is a book about books and authors, but I put it down for the afternoon to read my newest Bookmarks which now looks like a confetti organizer from all the little post-it flags I've put on it!

I read Finder a few years ago. He writes good thriller and suspense novels.

Cathy | 482 comments I am just beginning The Silent Land by Graham Joyce . It has been sitting in my room too long and has a very cool see-through jacket where some of the lettering is on this and some is on the front cover. Summer is her and I am venturing into this cold setting of the story in the French Alps in celebration of my recent booking of a winter trip to Iceland in the fall. Yes, I know I need to read a book set in Iceland or by an Icelandic author. All in good time. I am open to any suggestions from those reading Norse literature.

Siobhan (siobhan59) | 6 comments I have just started Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday and can hardly put it down. This one really strikes a chord with me. Reminds me of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer although it is very different. The epistolary format is the same, and I am picking up the same bittersweet undertones.
