Sera, I'd love to know what you think about
I Am the Messenger when you are done. I got this for myself this past year but haven't read it yet.

I Am the Messenger when you are done. I got this for myself this past year but haven't read it yet."Me too. Read Book Thief and it jumped to my favorite book list. Anxious to read this one, but it's got a few in the lineup before it.
Sera wrote: "Will do, Tasha. Have you read
?"Nope, not yet. It is also sitting on my shelf waiting to be read...this year I hope! I hear great things about The Book Thief but not much about I Am the Messenger.
is definitely one of my favorites. I read the first chapter of
last night and loved it already. It looks to be a funny story, whereas The Book Thief was a tear jerker.
I just started
this morning. I was on the wait list forever for it at the library and I'm hopeful that it will be worth it.
Stopped at the library on the way to several doctor appointments...during the wait time I was able to begin reading
.
What did I just start reading? That would be my new issue of Bookmarks Magazine -- yay! Love coming home and finding it in the mailbox!
This issue was excellent - lots of books in which I was interested in checking out - more so than the last issue.
Sera wrote: "This issue was excellent - lots of books in which I was interested in checking out - more so than the last issue."I thought the same ... last magazine I only marked a few books, but marked many more this time.
Sera wrote: "This issue was excellent - lots of books in which I was interested in checking out - more so than the last issue."Same here!

I agree - the current issue has a lot of highlighter marks in it from me! I started
You Know When the Men Are Gone - love the title

I started Tiger, Tiger: A Memoir
this evening. I love memoirs. I read so many of them, dark and light. This one is DEFINITELY dark with disturbing subject matter (a 17 year relationship between a young girl and a much older man - she was 7 and he was 51 when it started, and I only use the word relationship because I didn't know how else to describe it) so I wouldn't say it is for everyone.
Yeah, not sure I could read that one Stephanie but I'd love to hear what you think about it when you are finished.Sera, let me know how you like All Quiet on the Western Front. I'm thinking of reading that one too but not sure. I finished Zeitoun not that long ago and it was really good. Enjoy!
I started Between Shades of Gray
recently. It is a quick read with very short chapters to keep one engaged and reading forward. I am not impressed with the writing style, but the story is fairly interesting in a unsettling sort of way.
Will do, Tasha! I haven't read anything in either one yet - I've been too distracted by tv - but I'll let you know how things go.I just started
on audio yesterday, and so far, it is a blast.

I just started
, Geraldine Brooks' new book. I like all of her other books, so I have high hopes for this one.

Awesome! He comes off as such a tough guy in the book so I'm pleased to hear how nice he was to you. I think that he's hilarious, too. I'm really enjoying this one.

I love Netflix streaming - what is No Reservations like? Are you enjoying the book as much as the show?
It's so cool that other folks are reading this one as the same time as me since it's been around for awhile.
It's just ok. I have to admit, I am NOT a fan of Bourdain or his show. I get him, but find him grating. I really just wanted to read the book because so many people have talked about it being one of THE best books on working in the restaurant business, so that is what I am trying to enjoy about it.
Just getting started on
. It is a fascinating subject to consider the massive food waste in America with so many people in our own country and abroad going hungry.
Am about to begin My Name is Mary Sutter
by Robin Oliveira and The Elephant's Journey
by José Saramago. Has anyone read either of those? If so, opinions?

I can hear his voice in the book. The cadences of his writing for the show and the book are very similar. No Reservations is a Travel Channel show and he goes to different places and looks at the more obscure parts of the culture. Really interesting and he eats the local cuisine--no matter how frightening it seems to our American palates. He's also very introspective and respectful of the people he meets.

. I gave it 4 stars. Here's my review:I liked Mary's strong character and her conviction to become a doctor instead of settling on being a midwife as society dictated. The Civil War scenes and battles were graphically depicted, but served to drive home the harsh realities that not only Mary, but all soldiers, doctors, and nurses faced on the battlefield. The imagery was vivid and the story of loss and love poignant.

The book moves quickly on audio. It's the first time that I've listened to the author read his own work and actually liked it.
He was such a mess during most of his early life. It's amazing that he made it. I have 3 discs left to go so I should finish early this week.
Laurie wrote: "Am about to begin My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira and The Elephant's Journey..."I read My Name is Mary Sutter and gave it 4 stars, like Lisa. I really liked the story. Mary fought to be a doctor and the Civil War gave her a real eye-opener of an education. The descriptions put you right on the battlefield.
So embarrassing, but even with it's horrible ratings and reviews on goodreads, I listened to the first part of
while on the treadmill this morning. I loved these books when I was young, so I couldn't NOT read it. The writing is pretty awful, but it is like catching up with old friends.
I've heard great things about Swamplandia, but I don't think that it's something that I would be interested in. I'm also interested in your thoughts, Cathy.
