Tasha Sera, I'd love to know what you think about I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak I Am the Messenger when you are done. I got this for myself this past year but haven't read it yet.

Me too. Read Book Thief and it jumped to my favorite book list. Anxious to read this one, but it's got a few in the lineup before it.

Tasha Sera wrote: "Will do, Tasha. Have you read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak?"

Nope, not yet. It is also sitting on my shelf waiting to be read...this year I hope! I hear great things about The Book Thief but not much about I Am the Messenger.

message 709: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is definitely one of my favorites. I read the first chapter of I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak last night and loved it already. It looks to be a funny story, whereas The Book Thief was a tear jerker.

message 710: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I just started The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot this morning. I was on the wait list forever for it at the library and I'm hopeful that it will be worth it.

message 711: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Thanks Sera. :) i plan on getting to these in 2011.

message 715: by LynnB (new)

LynnB What did I just start reading? That would be my new issue of Bookmarks Magazine -- yay! Love coming home and finding it in the mailbox!

message 716: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments This issue was excellent - lots of books in which I was interested in checking out - more so than the last issue.

I thought the same ... last magazine I only marked a few books, but marked many more this time.

I agree! Love my Bookmarks magazine!

message 722: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I agree - the current issue has a lot of highlighter marks in it from me!

I started You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon You Know When the Men Are Gone - love the title

I want to eventually get to this one too!

message 724: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I am starting All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and Zeitoun by Dave Eggers tonight.

message 725: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I started Tiger, Tiger: A Memoir Tiger, Tiger A Memoir by Margaux Fragoso this evening. I love memoirs. I read so many of them, dark and light. This one is DEFINITELY dark with disturbing subject matter (a 17 year relationship between a young girl and a much older man - she was 7 and he was 51 when it started, and I only use the word relationship because I didn't know how else to describe it) so I wouldn't say it is for everyone.

message 726: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Yeah, not sure I could read that one Stephanie but I'd love to hear what you think about it when you are finished.

Sera, let me know how you like All Quiet on the Western Front. I'm thinking of reading that one too but not sure. I finished Zeitoun not that long ago and it was really good. Enjoy!

Cathy | 482 comments I started Between Shades of Gray Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys recently. It is a quick read with very short chapters to keep one engaged and reading forward. I am not impressed with the writing style, but the story is fairly interesting in a unsettling sort of way.

message 729: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Will do, Tasha! I haven't read anything in either one yet - I've been too distracted by tv - but I'll let you know how things go.

I just started Kitchen Confidential Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (updated edition) by Anthony Bourdain on audio yesterday, and so far, it is a blast.

I just started reading this one. Netflix started streaming No Reservations, and we've been devouring them, so I naturally wanted to read the book.

I love Netflix streaming - what is No Reservations like? Are you enjoying the book as much as the show?

It's so cool that other folks are reading this one as the same time as me since it's been around for awhile.

message 738: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie It's just ok. I have to admit, I am NOT a fan of Bourdain or his show. I get him, but find him grating. I really just wanted to read the book because so many people have talked about it being one of THE best books on working in the restaurant business, so that is what I am trying to enjoy about it.

message 739: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments Just getting started on American Wasteland How America Throws Away Nearly Half of Its Food (and What We Can Do About It) by Jonathan Bloom . It is a fascinating subject to consider the massive food waste in America with so many people in our own country and abroad going hungry.

I can hear his voice in the book. The cadences of his writing for the show and the book are very similar. No Reservations is a Travel Channel show and he goes to different places and looks at the more obscure parts of the culture. Really interesting and he eats the local cuisine--no matter how frightening it seems to our American palates. He's also very introspective and respectful of the people he meets.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments Laurie wrote: "Am about to begin My Name is Mary SutterMy Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira by Robin Oliveira and The Elephant's JourneyMy Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira. I gave it 4 stars. Here's my review:

I liked Mary's strong character and her conviction to become a doctor instead of settling on being a midwife as society dictated. The Civil War scenes and battles were graphically depicted, but served to drive home the harsh realities that not only Mary, but all soldiers, doctors, and nurses faced on the battlefield. The imagery was vivid and the story of loss and love poignant.

The book moves quickly on audio. It's the first time that I've listened to the author read his own work and actually liked it.

He was such a mess during most of his early life. It's amazing that he made it. I have 3 discs left to go so I should finish early this week.

LynnB Laurie wrote: "Am about to begin My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira and The Elephant's Journey..."

I read My Name is Mary Sutter and gave it 4 stars, like Lisa. I really liked the story. Mary fought to be a doctor and the Civil War gave her a real eye-opener of an education. The descriptions put you right on the battlefield.

message 745: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie So embarrassing, but even with it's horrible ratings and reviews on goodreads, I listened to the first part of Sweet Valley Confidential Ten Years Later by Francine Pascal while on the treadmill this morning. I loved these books when I was young, so I couldn't NOT read it. The writing is pretty awful, but it is like catching up with old friends.

message 749: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I've heard great things about Swamplandia, but I don't think that it's something that I would be interested in. I'm also interested in your thoughts, Cathy.

message 750: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Same here. I keep looking at it at the bookstore, thinking about it, and putting it down. I'll be another one interested in how you like it.
