Cathy | 482 comments Last night I started through my new Bookmarks magazine and tonight I felt in the mood to start one of my Christmas books.... The Disappearing Spoon And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sam Kean The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements. It seems like a cool book.

It's been a few years, but I loved Bel Canto on audio. I keep thinking I need to read something else by Ann Patchett.

message 610: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I also have Bel Canto. Reviews have been mixed, which is why I might not have been awhile to get to that one yet.

message 611: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments I started To the End of the Land by David Grossman on audio late last night. I am really enjoying it so far. It has that epic grand-storytelling feeling of the recently read The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer , which I also did on audio and loved. They both are lengthy reads.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments I'm getting ready to start The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott by Kelly O. McNees The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott. I also just received notification that my library e-book of The Passage (The Passage, #1) by Justin Cronin The Passage was ready to be downloaded. I may wait the 3 days I have to download it, because I might need the entire 2 weeks to read it.

LynnB I've just started two books: Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland Clara and Mr. Tiffany and The Fig Eater by Jody Shields The Fig Eater.

message 620: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments Lynn, I hope you enjoy Clara and Mr. Tiffany by Susan Vreeland as much as I did. About 3/4 of the way through, I did an internet search of Clara Driscoll, and was able to see the exact Tiffany lamps and designs that were detailed in the book. It really helped me appreciate the book much more.

Everything I hear about the book has been positive! (Though it makes me angry that she didn't get her acknowledgment for the work she did...). That's a great idea to research her - I'm heading for google to see what I can find.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments Hi Everyone! My reading has been sporadic over the last few weeks. I got an iPhone and I am completely addicted to it. I've got to get back to my books. I still haven't finished Henrietta Lacks. I've started a few on audio and am switching between two at this point:
Trouble by Gary D. Schmidt which is a YA novel by an author I like (and I am loving this book)
The Shallows What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas G. Carr which has an awful narrator (really boring to listen to) but is sort of an interesting book.

Hi Betsy,

I know what you mean about the Iphone. I got one today and I feel the draw of the new gadget as I try to leave it alone.

Thanks for the Trouble post. I am a former New England girl and will always be one at heart and have been up Mt. Katahdin many years ago. I will surely appreciate this read. My dad is from a town not far from Katahdin and I am very familiar with this area from numerous family trips to this area as a child and adult.

I've got to get going on Mr. Chartwell and leave the phone alone.

Nancy Motto | 450 comments I'm starting The Invisible Bridge as well. It's on my Kindle which I usually only read on vacation but have decided to take it to work for reading during lunch. I just can't figure out how to balance my reading between library books, my own books, and my kindle books (I tend to heavily favor library books - maybe because of the time limit) Of course, when you think about it, this isn't a bad problem to have.

message 632: by Jaime (new)

Jaime | 216 comments Becky wrote: "Just started Sing You HomeSing You Home by Jodi Picoult"

Becky, I usually get really excited about Jodi Picoult's books and pick up a copy on the day it comes out. I didn't get this one because I have been disappointed with her most recent books (even though the topic of this one is particularly interesting to me). I am still on the waiting list at my library for it, though. I am interested to know what you thought of it once you are done.

Sera | 1325 comments I started The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson on audio this morning. The reader is the same one as My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares , which is was one of my top 3 favorite books of last year. It appears that the storyline may be similar to that book as well.

I also intend to start Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon and Emma by Jane Austen this week.

message 643: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments Sera, The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson is one of my favorite books. I can't wait to hear what you think! I have My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares on my TBR, but I might have to bump it up to my shortlist seeing as it was one of your favorite books last year.

message 644: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I have The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson on my radar to read this year too! Look forward to hearing what you think about it Sera.

message 645: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Lisa, I'm always nervous about over-hyping a book. MNIM is really different, and it starts off very slow, but without knowing much about The Gargoyle (just the little bit from the blurb that I had read), there may be a huge common thread in regard to the storyline between the two books. I'm really hoping so, because I can't wait to compare the two if that's the case.

message 646: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Will do, Tasha!

message 647: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1693 comments I am listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson which is a second time for me. I read it late last year. This is my book discussion group's choice for March. I loved it the first time and am enjoying it the second time, too. Excellent narrator.

message 648: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Motto | 450 comments Sera,
If you're starting to read Outlander, be prepared to tune out the rest of the world for a while because it will suck you in and not let you go! If I was stranded on a desert island, that is the book I would want to have wth me.

I enjoyed Gargoyle, too. Strange plot but defintely worth reading.

Nancy, thanks for the warning. I was hoping that I could read it in chunks while reading other things in-between, but now I'm thinking probably not :)

I've been putting it off for too long now so I'm ready. If it's that good, and I can't discipline myself, "Emma" may have to wait a bit.
