What book did you just start?
Interesting to see both your Goodwill prices. Ours charges:Hardbacks $3.99
Paperbacks $2.99 (either trade or mass market)
We rarely get sales on books, though there is a 10% senior (age 55) discount one day a week.
I have no idea why ours is so high! We are a small rural area with plenty of kids at the schools on free or reduced-cost lunches. Makes no sense. Probably a West Coast thing as everything is more expensive here.

I'm in Southern California, and Lynn's prices are more in line to what they charge here. I rarely go to Goodwill for books.
Library sales here are always a good source and we just moved near a St Vincent de Paul thrift store which has great prices and a fantastic selection of adult and kids books. I'm not sure where they get their inventory because they only take donations of clothing from the public.
Lisa wrote: "Cathy, I want to know what you think of this when you're done. I recently added it to my TBR after Laura Lippman recommended it."Lisa...This has been sitting on my TBR list for about a year. A couple I know, that are on Goodreads, both seemed to enjoy this one. I hope to talk to them more about it when I finish it. I'll let you know what I think.
Chiming in on second-hand book prices.....We have a Salvation Army store near by, but the book selection is horrible and prices are high for what you get. I prefer to stay clear of this location. I usually check out two of my favorite local libraries in my county. They both have running book sales. One charges $2 for hardbacks and the other $1. Paperbacks are $1 at one and $.50 at the other. Usually I can find lots of good books at great prices. Of course, I should just read what I haven't got to that sits piled up in my bedroom. It is so hard to resist good books at good prices. I imagine the best prices, still, are all the free books to check out at our local libraries.
Continuing the thrift store prices for books…I'm perturbed about the price of Goodwill's books because they do not sell so many that there is even a Goodwill outlet store in Dayton (OH) where books are literally dumped into bins and sold for half the normal prices. Why not just put the decent price on them in the first place?
Then, I run our library's twice-a-year book sale where we charge 25¢ for paperbacks and 50¢ for hardback. Every time we are going to have a sale we discuss whether we will raise the price. I am always quick to veto that idea because we always have so many books leftover that I have to get rid of - I'm afraid what will remain if we raise the prices.
Our library had a big book sale this year and PB's were $.50 and HB $1. I developed some muscle carrying my purchases out to the car.
Starting
The Hangman's DaughterIt is the number one paid purchase on the kindle and I had never heard of it. It sounds like good historical fiction set in Germany.
Cathy, I just bought this on Kindle, too. It's supposed to be a hot read that has been recently translated into English. The author is supposed to be the next Stieg Larsson. Can't wait to hear what you think of it.

The "love" month continues....another read with a red rose on the cover. I am starting the new Lady Julia Grey historical/romance mystery
Dark Road to Darjeeling.
I'm about 80 pages into the Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. So many people raved about and now I see why.I think I'll add Callie to my list of favorite heroines (up there with Flavia DeLuce).
I'm listening to Little Bee. It didn't grab me when I read the book so decided to try listening. Still not grabbing me. I like the parts with Sarah in them but find myself not really engaged with Little Bee's story as sad as it is.

Agree on Little Bee - I found it difficult to get wrapped in her story.

That's what everyone tells me!!
I just started Sloane Crosley's
on audio. It was a Bookmarks book getting 3.5 stars. Not sure how I feel about this one so far. She is humorous and self-deprecating which I like, but I find it mildly offensive when she turns her rapier wit on others especially when it is because of their cultural differences.

I recently picked that one up too. It was a complete impulse buy.

"I really enjoyed this one. There is so much to the story if you take the time to think about it. I think Goodreads has it underrated.
Lynn, The Secret Scripture sounds really good! I put it on my tbr list. Not sure if I would have without your comments, so thanks!
I just started
The Hangman's Daughter. I'm only three pages in, so I'm not sure what I think of it just yet.

Mudbound"Linda, if you like this one, which I did, you must also check out
The Kitchen House. Both were very good and deal with racial themes in the South, but from different time periods.

I know! It just keeps getting better. I love when a thriller or mystery is well done and lucky for us, the quality in these genres has gone way up.
Susan, How far are you in it?
I started The Risk Pool by Richard Russo while on vacation and as usual, Russo's characters are so fully developed that it is a joy to dive into their lives.
I just got Risk Pool and Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter from the library today. Excited to get them read!!

Hardbacks - $2.50 each or 3/$6.50
Trade Paperbacks - $1.50 each or 3/$4
Mass Market - $.50 each or 5/$2
Occasionally, they will have a 50% off evening and they do offer a senior discount (one of the few times I wish someone would mistake me for a senior).
I try to buy my books in multiples of 3's for the better price, and I only buy HB or TPB. I don't like MMPB. You can see from the "Godbless Goodwill" shelf on my profile that I heavily support the Goodwill! :D
