What book did you just start?
Not sure where to put this post, but here seems just as good as any. Salon recently had an interesting article about reading challenges, that I thought many of you would enjoy. http://bit.ly/gweEGn
Betsy, I love this link! I'm fascinated with reading challenges since I joined The Seasonal Reading Challenge in the Fall of 2009. Participating in the challenges has pushed my reading to a new level. I'm reading more; plus I'm reading out of my comfort zone. I've been introduced to new authors I may have not discovered otherwise. It's also helped me to clear books off my TBR; then again it has also caused me to grow my TBR. Thanks for posting this link!

But this year I am doing a War & Peace challenge and that may be all I am up for in one year!

Plus, I do The Seasonal Reading Challenge, which is fun, but I will never finish it, because of the number of books that one has to read.
Starting
tonight. It's for my F2F book group next week, so I'll have to read quickly. Every once in a while we do a children's or YA book.
Betsy wrote: "Starting

I don't know how to make a cool little book on my post, but I just started reading DRINKING: A LOVE STORY by Caroline Knapp last night...and I'm halfway through it. Love her writing style and voice.
Dawn wrote: "I don't know how to make a cool little book on my post, but I just started reading DRINKING: A LOVE STORY by Caroline Knapp last night...and I'm halfway through it. Love her writing style and voice."Hi Dawn, it's easy. At the top of the text box is a link that says "add book/author" Click on it, type in your title or author, select whether you want to post a link to the book or the book cover and then share.
Yay Dawn! That was easy.I really want to read Drinking: A Love Story and The Merry Recluse: A Life in Essays by Knapp.
I started
about a week ago (which is a genre I really don't read but am finding this book to be really great) and today I started
, which I don't really have an opinion about yet. Lisa is my #1 go-to book person and she said it took her awhile to connect to the characters and I am only on page 65. I will trust her and stick with it b/c the premise is interesting.
Only 3 of my GR friends have read
, and they all rated it differently (3,4,& 5 stars). I waffled with the book at first, but eventually it grew on me and I loved the format. Can't wait to hear what you think Steph.

I just started
and I'm on the fence. It's hard me for me to get into this type of story since Harry Potter and I recently read
, which to me, is of a similar vein, albeit in a different context. I'm really hoping that Percy brings something different to this storyline.

Betsy wrote: "Lisa wrote: "Only 3 of my GR friends have read

I was slow to like this book, because I couldn't connect with the characters at first. About a third of the way into the book, the characters grew on me and I wanted to see what was going to happen next in their lives and between them. The book had an interesting premise; it followed Dex and Emily on the same day of every year starting with their college graduation. Their paths diverged and intersected over the next 20 years. The book was sarcastic, bittersweet and funny. It ended much stronger than it started for me.
I'm not sure if the slow start was me or the book. I was in a reading slump and having a hard time getting into anything for a few months. The characters were annoying at times, but eventually I got beyond that and ended up liking the book. I rated it 3.5 stars.
Lisa wrote: "Betsy,Do you have an e-reader? One Day is only $5 on the Nook right now."
Nope, no e-reader yet. I think One Day was on the NYT year's best list. I'll have to check.
Started
Work Song last evening while waiting for my book club to start. We had read
The Whistling Season a few months ago and we all enjoyed it a lot. This is the sequel that follows one of the main characters on a new adventure, again in the state of Montana.
Cathy wrote: "Started Work Song last evening while waiting for my book club to start. We had read [book:The Whistling Season|26..."I really enjoy Ivan Doig a lot, too. I've read about 3-4 of his books and hope to read more of them.
Betsy wrote: "Lisa wrote: "Only 3 of my GR friends have read

I've also seen it on many other top books of the year lists. I selected it as the read for one of my book clubs. Only one person didn't like it, because she said that she wasn't in the mood for it. I gave it 4 stars. I liked the premise and the way in which the story was laid out, but I had big issues with the Dexter character. I'm also one of a few who rooted for the characters as individuals, but hoped that they would never get together.
Some people also like to compare the book to the movie "When Harry Met Sally", which I didn't like. I thought that One Day was much better. As a side note, the book is currently being made into a movie starring Anne Hathaway and the guy from Across the Universe.
You'll have to tell us what you think about it when you start reading it.
To Lynn B: I couldn't get my reply to work in response to your positive Ivan Doig remarks.....I liked his most recent novel Work Song. It was nice to follow Morrie Morgan on another western adventure. I did prefer my former read The Whistling Season, though. These are the only two of his works that I have read. What would you recommend on my next outing from his former novels? He is a new author for me and I am enjoying his novels very much.

I read it quite a while ago, before goodreads, so I don't have a review on it...in fact, I think I may go back and re-read it soon in order to review it! I do remember that I liked it a lot. If I remember right,it's the first book in a trilogy.
I'm just starting
Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of Friendship. Everyone seems to be saying good things about it, so I'm looking forward to reading it.
I am just getting started on my bookclub read for next month:
This Book Will Save Your Life.I knew nothing of this book or author before beginning it. I hadn't got past the first fifty pages and the narrative is riddled with scenes of laugh-out-loud humor. Very clever and engaging and I can't wait to finish.
Conincidently, when I pulled up the book/author links there is a book called "This Book Will Not Save Your Life" by another author. Strange.
I saw the above post on
and that it is listed for $5 on the Nook. It is also $5 on the Kindle for all you Kindle users. Also,
is listed for $5 as well.
I started
and
. I'm well into the former, and I'm enjoying it very much even though a few of my friends didn't like it.
Lisa, I think that Quindlen does a great job of drawing her characters. I also feel like a part of this community, an insider so to speak.
Started
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks last night and already in love with Skloot's writing and the story of the HeLa cells. Fascinating. I already know that this is going to go on my list of "Non-Fiction for People Who Don't Like Non-Fiction".

I liked The Forgotten Garden, but I just couldn't get into this one. I got about halfway through and wondered why I was reading it.

I recently purchased TFG. I'm glad to hear that it was a good read.
I just started reading "Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter," by Tom Franklin. It was interesting to find out what the title meant right away. On page 67 and am hooked. Hope to finish this weekend!
I am just beginning my "First Reads" giveaway book
So Many Ways to Begin. It looks interesting. It is a previous Man Booker nominee(2006). This is a strong indicator to me that this novel is worthy of a closer look.

I wouldn't think to compare it to The Help either, although I loved both.
