What popped into my head was The Keys to the Street by Ruth Rendell, but it's been so long since I read it that I can't remember what it's a bout.

Hmmmm...I sense a re-reading opportunity.

I just finished up Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close which featured a strange key. I thought the book was pretty good, but most people thought it was REALLY good.

It has a 4.17 rating.

I have another to suggest but it's by Melanie Rawn, Kate Elliott, and Jennifer Roberson. It was the book that hooked me on fantasy and these 3 authors.[book:The Golden Key

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen is a cute YA novel in which keys play a large part.
