Jackie (Literary Escapism) (literaryescapism) Christmas is next week and I've always found at least one book under the tree for me. This year, which book are you hoping to find under your tree? Is this the time of year where you acquire the most books? Do people normally give you bookstore giftcards or do they know which books to get you?

message 2: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (literaryescapism) For me, I'm not really looking forward to any one book. I'm looking for more giftcards than anything, specifically to Amazon so I can get ebooks for my kindle. There were a few books I was really looking forward to and I was lucky enough to get them early...so I doubt they'll be under my tree.

Wicked Enchantment (Dark Magick, #1) by Anya Bast First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Deadtown by Nancy Holzner

I really don't acquire that many books during Christmas, at least not like I used to. I could always count on my mother or grandmother to give me at least two books each; but since I "grew up", I get more household stuff and not as many books (or things they think I want). However, I make up for that during the year. :)

When I do get books for Christmas, my family asks for recommendations, except for my cousin. We share the same taste in books, so she doesn't really have to ask what I would want. She can usually guess pretty well. :) When I do get gift cards, they are generally to anything but a bookstore.

message 3: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) | 29 comments I'm very very wary about people getting me books. I'm generally picky about what I like to read, and when people find out I like paranormal romances, they think I'm a dork.

However, I did get an AWESOME book present once. My mom got me Karen Marie Monings "Spell of the Highlander"...and it got me absolutly hooked in her Highlander world, and eventually Fever world.

message 4: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (literaryescapism) "You like vampires? Why?" Yeah, I get that a lot too Amanda. :P

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 276 comments Ditto to both Amanda and Jackie. :)

What I want: a gift card to the Sony store so I can buy books for my reader

What I'll get: a sweater or hoodie

message 6: by Book Huntress (new)

Book Huntress (bookhuntress) | 84 comments LOL Sarah...

I am pretty sure I am getting my "boys" for Christmas, asked for the BDB books and think those are a definite...

Usually get a least a few $s in gift cards, hopefully will again this year.

The best is when I was younger (actually even now I suppose) if I did get a book I could look at the cover etc but then my family would take it away from me until the end of the day so I didn't start reading it and go into "book coma"!!

message 7: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Orlich Ahern (kittymeowxcore) | 29 comments Yea I asked for Amazon gift certificates so I can buy tons of Kindle books.

I don't ever get much from anyone for any sort of holiday (birthdays included) so I don't expect any books for xmas.

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments Dear Santa:

I have been decidely good this year. Too good in fact. Please help me to be naughty. I'd like a gift in the over 6' category, preferably with broad shoulders, dark hair, and a mischievous smirk. Tortured past is optional. That would make my holiday complete.

All my love,
M.

On the book front, I'm hoping for gift cards. I tend to run out and buy books as soon as they're released so it would be hard for someone else to get me something I haven't already purchased!

I considered asking for the nook. Still contemplating it.

LOL, Michelle! Carbon copy letter and mail for me please. Only perhaps I should ask for exactly 6' or slightly under, since any more makes my 5' look toy like.

How do you feel about fetching fiances? I'm sure he'd gladly help distribute gifts for a free flight on your sleigh.

On the way, ask him if he has any brothers or cousins for the rest of us.

Fondest holiday wishes,
M.

Since I just won a gift card in a contest, I'm getting a book for Christmas after all. *Happy Snoopy dance* Wonder what I should get?

message 22: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments Snoopy dance. Lol.

Let's see. Books I would GIVE for Christmas:

Soulless by Gail Carriger. My favorite book of 2009. I've already bought 3 copies to give away.

Mead's Dark Swan books, Storm Born and Thorn Queen. Very good UF. Dorian's my favorite new man.

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series, especially for those who were Lit majors or have read through all the classics. Heaps of fun and very imaginative.

Gil's All Fright Diner by A. Lee Martinez for a zany, different look at vamps, weres and demons.

Karen Chance's series for action-packed, steamy amusement.

I'm going to be daring. One of the Soulless copies is going to my mom. She's the type that says: "Michelle...vampires? But, aren't they frightening and gorey? Oh, no." ::scrunches nose::

I emailed her some quotes from the book and had her in stitches. I'll convert her yet, dammit!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 276 comments Ooh, looking up Soulless now! And good luck with the conversion effort. Success is rather hit and miss with this genre when it comes to converting others.

Love Dark Swan, Thursday Next, and Karen Chance. I'm thinking I'll use my card to get the new Dory Basarab in January.

**continues happy Snoopy dance**

message 25: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments ♥Tricia♥, I'm always frustrated at this time of year. I need to start picking gifts up when I see them and stowing them away, rather than feeling frantic and wracking my brain!

Sarah, I can't imagine she'll be a true convert to the genre. But I think she will become a Carriger fan at the very least. It's like a perfect blend of Masterpiece Theater and sharpened stakes. And since you like my other choices, I think you'll enjoy Soulless too! It's my big Peer Pressure Campaign book.

Death's Mistress. You already know I can't wait for that one! That will be a gift card well spent!

And we didn't AT ALL hijack the thread.

message 29: by Mary E. (new)

Mary E. (jujjy) | 3 comments I'm hoping for an Amazon gift card (or three), also, so I can afford all the preorders I have for my Kindle when they finally release. I'm such a Kindle junkie that I had to put myself on a strict monthly budget... that 1-click button is just too easy, and I about had heart failure when I noticed how much I was spending. So now my wish-list just grows (and grows, and grows).

message 30: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments Nope. I didn't steer us off course. Not in the slightest. Not me.

Dear Santa:

A book might be nice, too. You can ask my man-gift to hold it for me. Wouldn't he make for nice wrapping?

Feeling jolly,
M.

message 31: by Shanon (new)

Shanon (boban) oooh... let's be sure to ask for some free time to enjoy the book and the "wrapping"!

LOL!!!

I love it!

message 33: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments Shanon, I was totally thinking of when we were all kids and the wrapping and boxes were sometimes more fascinating than the gifts.

:)

It seems like a lot of us want gift cards. Last year, I asked for specific books. This year, I asked mostly for DVDs. The only book I asked for was A Touch of Dead, the compilation of Sookie stories, since I didn't NEED it right away.

I know my coworker pre-ordered Fforde's Shades of Grey for me, but it doesn't come out til January.

message 34: by ♥Tricia♥, Group Lead (new)

♥Tricia♥ (siddie) | 1167 comments Mod
I personally love to get specific gifts rather then gift cards. I am not sure why.. as I know with a gift card I can get whatever I want. But I feel that it sort of spoils the surprise.
Even though getting a gift, at least for me, is always a surprise.. its better when its something specific I think.

message 35: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments ♥Tricia♥, specific gifts ARE nicer. More personal. But I'm just so OCD about buying books. No one could hope to keep up with what I've bought. And my addiction won't permit me to refrain from buying new ones.

Meanwhile, do I READ them right away? Nope! But I am compelled to OWN them as soon as they come out.

I'm such a sad sap.

message 36: by ♥Tricia♥, Group Lead (new)

♥Tricia♥ (siddie) | 1167 comments Mod
LOL I am just like you! I have this book buying addiction.. I have more then probably 50 books I have yet to read taht I own LOL.

And I still look for more! hahaha

YES! This is my exact response when people ask me what books I want as gifts. I am just too picky (and I'm anal about series reading order), and my book choices are just too personal and mood-driven for me to be able to make a list that won't change tomorrow. So in this one case, gift cards are much better for me! Plus, I haven't touched a DTD (dead tree book) in almost a year since I got my Kindle, and gift givers aren't able to buy specific Kindle books for me.

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 276 comments Michelle M. wrote: "There should be a 12 Step, complete with sponsors and meetings."

For Heaven's sake, WHY??? I fully embrace and own my addiction. It's safer than lots of other vices I could have. I figure since this one's so strong, it must be sucking karma from all other possible vices I might have and rendering them non-existent. I might be darned near angelic thanks to my reading addiction. Habit. Need. Whatever. :)

Like everyone else, when it comes to books, I prefer gift cards. I'm all of the above about my books, OCD, moody, and must have them when they come out. Makes it really hard to ask others to buy for me. Plus no one approves of my PNR tendencies.

And Michelle, man-gift? *snickers*

message 40: by Mary E. (new)

Mary E. (jujjy) | 3 comments LOL I totally agree with Sarah, there are worse addictions! (or habits. or needs. whatever). And I doubt any expand our vocabulary like reading! ;)

Peace

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 105 comments I'm with you, Sarah and Mary. But, you know, every now and then I get this silly little thought: Hey, wouldn't it be nice to have a social life?

But it passes.

:)

Man-gift...it cracked me up writing it.

(Imagining Santa and elves circled around a bronzed, god-like man. "Hmn. Now, lads. Where to put the bow?")

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 276 comments Ahem... man-gift aside... no really, stand over there and look pretty, son. We'll get back to you and your be-ribboned bronzed, foreign accented kin in a few minutes. Try not to squoosh each other with those broad shoulders.

You'll be happy to note that my early Christmas gift to myself was an ebook copy of Soulless. I have a few to finish before I get to it, but I will read it soon. Consider me converted.

Still waiting on my gift-card prize before I order Death's Mistress. Forgot to mention that I won my gift card for a short story contest here: http://www.michellerowen.com/2009/12/...

Hence the *happy Snoopy dance*

seriously made me laugh out loud (husband can hear me when this happens, so yes he thinks I am going insane)

As for gifts vs. gift cards - I agree I appreciate a "real gift" and I hate to give gift cards, however like the rest of us when it comes to books it is hard to get specific. I did this year with the BDB series, but other than that rather have the gift card so I can choose what i want, plus the whole mood thing and like Sarah, not sure what they think of my choices in books...

and no we have not at all hijacked the thread it all goes together in some weird cosmic way, at least for us it does!!! LOL

Omg I totally understand. I've spent as much in books as I did on the reader itself. The one-click to buy button is AMAZING, and that's a huge problem for me. It's so nice being able to read another book right after finishing a book.

Yup, the only way I'll be able to afford my reading addiction is with amazon gift cards.
