Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Hooray, just finished book #2. I'm off to a slow start.

message 302: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) Don't worry some months will be better then others

Ann hope you feel better soon

message 303: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I just finished book #4 last night. If I continue at this pace, I will be fine but somehow I don't think that will happen.

message 304: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments Well, don't pressure yourself Wendy. Just read for the simple pleasure of it all. Not trying to reach 144.. It makes things less enjoyable if you're only doing it to reach a goal while not taking the time to enjoy the book, you know?

LynnB Wendy wrote: "I just finished book #4 last night. If I continue at this pace, I will be fine but somehow I don't think that will happen."

Wendy, just remember this is a personal challenge, not a race with everyone else. The important thing is to enjoy reading!!

message 306: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Ann, I hope you feel better. baked potatoes, rice, dry toast is also good for stomach bugs. And good old saltines too. This is the time of year that stuff goes around.

message 307: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) Oh, I enjoy my books...it is staying awake to read them that seems to be the problem :)
Thank God for lunch at work!

message 308: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I'm really not rushing my books. I just seemed to be picking books that when I get into them and they grab me that I can't put them down I end up getting them read in a day or two. Certain books do that with me. Other books for me are earlier to put down and not pick up. And the last few days I'm been reading more. I should probably be doing other things around here. I just hope the rest of the month I can keep it up so I can get at least 12 read. I'm sure some months will not be as good a count as 12. So if there is one with more every once in awhile that will help it out.

message 309: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Donnajo--just get sick and sit in the bathroom for an entire day. That will let you get LOTS of reading done. I have to admit--having the books on hand in the bookcases (and in piles in the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, living room. . .) has been nice. Altho I'm also a fast reader anyway, so reading a book a day is normal for me--but not feeling up to doing anything at all, so all I do is read. . . That's let me REALLY get a nice start to our challenge.

message 310: by Ronda (new)

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) After reading all these post, I see you guys moving right along. I created a ticker to track how many I have read but I like the idea that Julie has of keeping a list on a new "bookshelf" in My Books called Read 2010.

So far I have read two books Ravens of Avalon: Avalon Book 3 and The Forest House.

I will be finishing up tonight my 3rd and 4th books because they had to be read together according to their time lines and they are
Lady of Avalon (Avalon Series) and Priestess of Avalon

I love this series so far. Happy reading everyone

message 311: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) Well, I've finished 5, and am on 6, 7, and 8. I usually read fast if I really like a book. I usually have two books going at the same time because one is an audio, but I think 3 is too much. I am half-way through two hardbacks and when I finish those, my goal is to go back to the two books. I think I did pressure myself at the beginning of the challenge, but have come to realize, like others, that it can take some of the enjoyment and relaxation of reading away. I haven't given up on the challenge, though. Also, since I am trying a lot of new authors, I need to put a book down after a while if it is not engaging me. At this point, I don't know if that will help or hurt the challenge. Ah, something else to be explored.

message 312: by Lisa S (new)

Which 2 books do you want to go back to?

you should enjoy reading and do not think of this as a race. if you aree not in the mood it is difficult o read and if you read for the sake of reading and do read a lot you get overloaded and on't want to read after a couple of months

message 314: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I cannot read two books at the same time. It would confuse me.

message 315: by Wendy T (new)

Wendy T I can only read one book at a time as well, but I usually have audio book on the go as well. So while I work on the computer I usually listen to an audio book and while driving to and from work daily.

message 316: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I am on 14 and 15. I have one audio going Nineteen Minutes, and one regular book, Malicious Intent: A Novel. I will probably finish the audio one today. In the past I haven't cared for Jodi Picoult, but one of my friends on GR recommended this one to me and it is really good.

message 317: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I am about to start Little women By Louisa A Alcott onaudio

I will be some time later this yr read the book

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments Five down and 139 to go. Two more are started.

Kelly Smith (kander33) Wow, I am a total slacker. I am only on book 2, hoping just to start the 3rd today. =(

message 320: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) Kelly, you aren't a slacker, just super busy. I know the only reason I am so far is that I am not working at this time, so it gives me tons of time. I am hoping that will change.

Afsana, Regarding the two books, I meant that I need to stop reading three books at a time, and get back to my usual routine where I only read 2 books at a time.

message 322: by Nita (new)

Nita (gillnit) So far I have read five books, one non-fiction, one historical fiction, and three pnr/uf.

My current/sixth read is another pnr: [image error]

message 323: by Kelly (last edited Jan 11, 2010 09:26AM) (new)

Kelly I completed book #4 last night and started the first few pages of book #5. I don't feel that I'm in a race, but I do feel that I'm not reading as much as I'd like to be, or as much as I could. We all have different schedules and commitments, though, and some of us have the opportunity to read more than others of us. Everyone should feel proud of where you are, no matter how many you've read so far. :-)

message 324: by Tiff (new)

Tiff (utbooklady) | 65 comments I finished book 4 Saturday and about 120 pages into book 5 now. I am super proud to be on book 5 as of the 10th of January, considering I don't usually read so much or so fast but I'm having a blast challenging myself and I'm trying to stay as close to on track as possible to hit 12 per month. I hope my momentum keeps up :)

message 325: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Good going Tiffiane :)

144 books a year works out to an average of 1 book every 2.5 days. 11 days divided by 2.5 = 4.4 books, so you are right on track!

:P

LOL Kelly, you sound like me with the math! I'm an accountant so this is totally something I've been keeping track of :)

message 327: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Thank goodness for you ladies who are better at math than me. I've been trying to do the math myself and as usual with math problems, I just end up confused! Thanks for figuring it out for us!!

message 328: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 87 comments I have finished books 2 and 3. I picked up Frankinstein by Mary Shelly thinking it would be a quick read, but it is not. It is very wordy, the creature does not appear till chapter 5 and then he is only mentioned in passing. It is not like the movie at all.

message 329: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I hate it when a book I think is going to be one way and it usually turns out the other. Usually it is the way Colleen said, easy turning into hard. I am waiting for those that are hard to turn easy.

message 330: by Sadie (new)

Sadie (goodreadscomelexisca) | 4 comments I just finished one book so I am reading two books right now. A book is "The Lighting Thief" that I can't wait to see whats happening at the end! I didn't read the books very much when I was younger. Right now, I love to reading books and it hooked me up that I want to read more forever! I am looking forward to see what's happening if I finish 144 books in 2010!

message 331: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 87 comments LOL Darcy, I am also waiting for hard to turn easy. I keep telling my boys it is not going to happen. :)

message 332: by Donna (new)

Donna (gumshoegal) So far so good. Haven't been trying to keep count. Have actually been able to read comfortably and not think about how many are on the list so far.

message 333: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 93 comments My 13th book for the month was The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong - how appropriate!! I rated it 4.5* but may up it to 5*. At first I felt that the beginning chapters were not compelling enough, but now I'm thinking that the author was trying to make the reader look at two strong but opposing reasons for Chloe's behavior, and make them both believable. So she set the hook really well. But now, of course, I have to get the next book!

message 334: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) BJ wrote: My 13th book for the month was The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1)...

I find it interesting how much you liked this book and your comments about the beginning. I tried it when it first came out and got bored at the start so I gave it up. But some people from another group on here talked me into trying it again, said it a little slow, but the second one was better. So I did, and it took me until the last 1/4 of the book before it was interesting, and then there was the ending which had me cursing the second one wasn't in my house. I got that one right away and now am waiting for the third.

Karen (karenvwrites) | 122 comments this is going slow but I am sure I will get through.

message 336: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Good idea to make a separate shelf on My bookcase for this year's reads. Otherwise it just get's all mixed in with the finished books. I think I'll do that too. It makes it easier to go back and see what your top reads for the year is too. As for reading more than one book at a time. I can read if they are different. Or I have books now on my Ipod (free kindle e reader download with free books it's a test to see how much use I would get out of a E Reader if I bought one). I have to look back last year at this time to see how many books I had read that would be a good test. I think at this stage I'm good at being on my 7th book. Just looked I was only finished with 4 books last year on the 11th. So I'm ahead already. But it's the type of books I'm reading.

Stacie (stacieh) | 247 comments I sailed through my first five but have since hit a bit of a slow down... apparently being sick as a dog is good for reading and being healthy and having to go to work is bad for it. Who knew? ;p

I will have to give it another go as I got half way and gave up and didn't bother with the rest!!

message 340: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) Afsana, if you like her other books definitely go back and try this one. Make yourself read it to the end, it is worth it. I think you will like it. Let me know what you think.

Darcy, that was my reaction exactly, and my library system doesn't have even one copy of The Awakening so I'm off to the UBS to see if they have it.

Afsana, I almost took it back to the library several times after starting it, but gave it 'one more chance' at apparently the right time. Sounds like Darcy liked the 2nd one - I was really surprised that my entire library system doesn't have even one copy, but I know budgets are tight everywhere.

message 342: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) BJ don't you hate it when you get hooked on a series and the library has the audacity to only have the first one and not the others, forcing you to buy them???? LOL
I feel like then as long as I am buying later ones in the series I should just have all of them. One good thing about the library system in MN is they do an interlibrary loan, and I have been able to get books from all over the state and sometimes they even go out of state to get the things I have requested.

I will definatly give it a go- found it the other day and will read it in within the next month

I like her women of the otherworld

what did you thing of the nadia stafford book? exit strategy couldn't get into that

message 344: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I liked the Nadia Stafford series. She is a different sort of a heroine, you don't expect to find them to be an assassin.

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) So far I have finished 5 & have started 6,7 & 8.

I listen to audio at work & currently I am listening to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell & Salvation in Death & the book I am reading is Witch & Wizard on my Kindle.

Ok time to quit playing on the computer & READ!!! LOL

message 346: by Edith (new)

Edith | 34 comments I'm off to a really slow start but I've had company in town for the last week and a half so I think I'll get some serious reading done this weekend!

I loved the suggestion of making a list for this challenge. I've started a mini list and I'm so excited to get some of these books knocked off my TBR list. Good luck everyone!

Our library system also does interlibrary loans, but I'm usually too impatient to wait that long!!

Where in MN are you, Darcy? I grew up about 50 miles from the Twin Cities.

message 350: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well, I think I just finished #19--but it could have been #20. While I do feel somewhat better, I'm afraid that I still do NOT feel very good, and if I do more than walk 10 or 15 feet, I feel like sitting down and taking a nap. I can NOT believe how wiped out this stupid bug has made me feel.

Ok, one of the last 2 books I read was Kitty Goes to Washington. As a resident of the Washington DC metropolitan area, I wish to state my protests at the way Carrie Vaughn portrayed DC. She just did NOT get the amount of traffic right. I mean, it takes me 15 minutes to get from my house the 2 miles to the Mall--and that's NOT during rush hour. So her having Kitty zipping around (even in a chauffer driven car) and taking very little time to get anywhere is just unrealistic. (lol, bet you all thougth I was going to object to her portrayal of that Senator, right? Nope, spot ON with him.) Still I enjoyed the book a great deal, and I now know how to dispose of an unwanted UnSeelie fae. :o)
