Cover to Cover Challenge discussion
How is your 144 books for 2010 going
I had a couple of rough months where I didn't read anything I'm counting, but I'm back to reading now. I don't think I'll get to 144, but I'm hoping to break 100!
Delicious Dee the book slut wrote: "i bought a box of cozy mysteries on ebay - haven't gotten to them yet, but they look good...i think I got like 30 for $15...ebay is dangerous for my TBR pile"I did the same thing Dee! There was a bookstore that was going out of business and I got 100 books for $9.99 (with less than $20.00 S&H) although it was not listed which books I would get there were 100. I slowly organized them but when the box came my husband freaked out!
OOOHHHH DD--what did you get? Not only ebay, but also Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Vincent dePaul's, the Friends of the Library. . . All places that are really good at mugging me and stealing money from me for books, books and yet MORE books. (feeling dizzy and having withdrawals. I need to hit a bookstore.)
ummm....a lot...hang on, let me see if i can find the list still...they are all on my TBR list here though...nope, can't find the list anymore
Mackenzie don't worry. I am only at 66 and just don't feel like reading this month. I am listening to books so its not completed wasted but just can't motivate myself to open a book. Hopefully I will get out of this funk soon, but I will be lucky if I make 100 books this year.
Awhn, I felt like that before. At the beginning of April or May.. I can't remember which, I was in a complete slump because I just didn't feel like reading, so I didn't. Then I had to work my butt off to get back on track! Well, no matter how many books you read this year, it's still a good effort :)
It looks like I am definitely not going to hit the 144... and it I'm really going to have to push to even beat last year's total. I'm doing a lot less re-reading this year and I've got quite a few longish books under my belt so I guess it could be worse! I find that since I got my Nook the books I read keep getting longer and longer now that I don't have to worry about how heavy they are to lug around, LOL.

I would hate to think anyone would avoid books like that to make the 144 books. Has there ever been any discussion on counting longer books as more? Maybe only if you're short of the goal? Like a book "credit" for every 350-400 pages?
Way to go, Lynn! Congratulations!I just finished #74. That leaves 70 more to go. I have this huge feeling, today being August 17th, that that is so not going to happen, LOL! If I hit 120, I'll be happy. It's lower than my previous low, but I'll still be happy, LOL!
I am going to start today and try to finish before december... but school is starting next week so I don't know if I can...
I know personally I don't select books based on page count, I've read everything from 150 pages to 500 pages as part of my books...if I read a shortie (under 100 pages), then I wait until I read another one and list them together! I have a couple of chubby chunksters (as a challenge for another group) that I need to get read (defined as 450+ pages)

Finally all done. Got caught up in work and just couldn't read much this past week. But 144 fell by the wayside today! Working on 145 and 146.
congrats Jim. I have to admit tho--I'm kind of missing the "humour" you have in some of your posts in other groups. :o)
Thank you for the cheers! Not a chance I'll do 288. My goal is 200 and I'm sticking to that.Ann, I'd love to be proactive and have good posts all the time. However, time constraints limit my participation. As it is, I'm probably on GR for close to an hour or so each day. I've chosen one main group to put my efforts. However, this is the perfect place to keep track of my books as I've been going through. Sorry I haven't been funnier. Try stopping by at http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3... and I'll see if I can't make you a drink. And there's always Jim's slightly offensive joke thread found http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2... .
It's fun to see people read more than they have in the past. It's interesting to see the frustrations as well. This group has been fun in it's own way.

(Giggling) I know Jim--I know about your other posts on other groups because, um, well, ok, I admit it--I belong to them too. You can usually be counted on to brighten a dark day when you post. On that note, my "dark days" usually have to do with pain. I have some serious pain issues (arthritis, migraines and we won't even TALK about the endometriosis)

The doctor said it was pointless to be in pain because I was probably sterile. I told him I needed time to think and went back in a few months, he did an ultrasound to show me how bad it was. It was a miracle, everything had disappeared. The doctor told me if I ever wanted a kid to try immediately. Had my first son the next year. Pretty much every pregnancy makes it go away a little more, so I was very lucky to have had my miracle babies.
I have a family member who is currently suffering from bladder endometriosis. Bad news all the way around. Shay, I'm so glad that you managed to have your children when you could. Every child is a miracle. Some just more so. @Ann, I'm so sorry to hear about your pain issues. I know that you manage to read books at a steady clip. Do you find that reading is a form of escapism? Does it make you feel better?
Yes, the reading is a form of escapism. The kind of pain I'm in, you build up an immunity to pain meds fairly quickly. If I have a good book (or even a bad one that's fun to mock) I can actually not FEEL the pain as badly, because I have something else to concentrate on. On the negative side--I spend a LOT of money on books (even getting them at thrift stores/used bookstores/library sales) every year. And I DO use my library, but the rate I go through books means that I will read all the new books they get in each year essentially by the end of Jan. I do go back and re-read my fav's. And, well, if I'm in a LOT of pain, I have 2 shelves of books that are all funny, and will turn to them, because I KNOW that they are funny and will help to distract me even more than other books do.
I just finished book 69 at 1am today. I've moved three times in the past several months so I got a bit behind a few months but my D&D manuals helped out a few times. I'm definitely counting those because they have small print and are quite long.

I am so nominating you for the survivor award. I haven't moved in 30 years because I can't face sorting all my books and saved treasures. I can't fathom doing it several times in just a few months. I think surviving 3 moves ought to count as an achievement all by itself. Hope you get to stay put in your current place for awhile. Roots are nice.

Thanks. My husband was in the Army and we were stationed in Canada. I moved into my parent's house for a month because of the way the Army set-up our move (we would have lived without everything for almost a month). The hubby stayed to finish the assingment, living with friends. After that we moved to Laurel, MD. We were looking around semi-seriously for somewhere to buy and the perfect house sort of fell into our laps. We ended up buying it 2 and 1/2 months after moving into our rental. So, that is my moving saga. Ottawa, Canada to Lebanon, PA in March to Laurel, MD in April to Chesapeake Beach, MD in July. Needless to say, I've still got boxes to unpack and I'm in no hurry :-p

Oh--and I know all about the moving thing. When I graduated from high school, I applied to the FBI for a position as a fingerprint tech. They wanted a list of everywhere I'd lived--and every school I'd attended. My Mum got everything together and we figured out--I'd been in a total of 18 schools and we'd lived in 27 different places. The military is like that. :o) (Dad was a career Naval officer.)
lol...I know how that is...I just did my updated security clearance...every place i've lived for the last 10 years...and I had to list each dorm room separately!
