Synopsis Expertly retold to appeal to second to fourth graders, as well as older reluctant readers, each of the beautiful, high-quality books in the Classic Starts series is a literary treasure.
Annotation The character of Sherlock Holmes first appeared in 1887 in, A Study in Scarlet.
Library Journal David Timson is a most convincing narrator in this sixth installment of Sherlockian adventures; he ably captures the voices of Dr. Watson and Holmes. The program (along with the five others in the series) includes musical interludes that add to the narrative. Interestingly, this series is based on the Strand magazine version, Doyle's first thoughts on how the cases of Holmes should appear. Presented here are "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott," "The Adventure of the Resident Patient," "The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor," and "The Adventure of the Final Problem," the most disturbing of the Holmes tales, in which Doyle introduces Professor Moriarty and then ruthlessly kills him, one of the most popular characters to ever grace English literature. Highly recommended for all libraries; classical literature and music at its best.-Theresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., Russellville Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Biography Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was both a doctor and a believer in spirits, which may partly explain why his Sherlock Holmes is one of literature's most beloved detectives: Holmes always approaches his cases with the gentility and logic of a scientist, but the stories are suffused with an aura of the supernatural. Narrated by devoted assistant Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes's adventures were so addictive that fans protested the master deducer's "death" in 1893 and Doyle had to resurrect him.
