In this book there is a world on the brink of war. A human woman becomes part of the effort to stop this from happening.

The race of beings on the planet are all born female. When they reach a certain age they go through a "dementia" or "menopause" that changes them to male. The aliens are very family/clan oriented. Sisters and daughters are very important. A few humans have been allowed on the planet and one of these humans helps one of the aliens try to prevent war between the clans.

I seem to remember the aliens are allergic to the humans and so humans they are in contact with have to wear protective suits.

I also remember that some of these aliens are exiled to Mars in the beginning of the story. This includes the main alien, who is allowed to go home near the beginning.
