I loved The Widow of the South! Hope you enjoy it, too.

I own Wideacre and The Favored Child, but haven't read them yet. I'm so glad you like the task!

Kathryn wrote: "Would the American Civil War and one of Jane Austen's novels be set far enough apart? I was to read The Widow of the South... Thanks!"

That should be fine.

The Lady and the Unicorn

The Awakening"

Wonderful choices!

TeresaFL | 92 comments I was thinking of using Pilate's Wife A Novel of the Roman Empire and Year of Wonders for this task. They're both sitting on my bookshelf so that's a plus. I love historical fiction so this has to be one of my favorite tasks yet!

message 56: by Nicki (new)

Nicki (luluminstrel) | 279 comments If anyone wants a different time period I can recommend the Boudicca books by Manda Scott. I've only read the first one but it was great.

Also, the Arthur books by Bernard Cornwell are fabulous (can't remember the order but I think there are just three):
The Winter King A Novel of Arthur
Enemy of God A Novel of Arthur
Excalibur A Novel of Arthur

And also on the Arthur theme, Mary Stewart's series is an absolute classic:
The Crystal Cave
The Hollow Hills
The Last Enchantment
The Wicked Day

I just added "Pilate's Wife" to my TBR. I can't wait to hear what you think about it. I plan on reading "Year of Wonders" for the "aids task." Thanks for picking this task as one of your faves! :D

I want to read the Mary Stewart series. It looks excellent. Thanks for the recommendations.

Bluemoon (bluemoon286) | 1797 comments Stopped at the library today and picked up The Heretic's Daughter and Innocent Traitor A Novel of Lady Jane Grey. I could have picked up at least a dozen novels for this task. But I will be reading more historical fiction for other tasks. I really enjoy learning about other times.

I read that book in high school. I enjoyed it.

Oh goodness, I hadn't thought about using Year of Wonder for the "aids" task. I might have to rethink this and use it there. Either way I'm planning on reading it! It's not like I don't have some other good historical fiction I could substitute here.

This library site was recommended to me. They have fabulous reader's advisory services.
http://www.wrl.org/bookweb/

Check the booklist dropdown for 100+ historical writers or watch the youtube video at the historical crime fiction link.

I have found all kinds of recommendations here. Makes me want to move to Williamsburg so I can use this library! (But I love my home library, too!)

What a great site! I love their dropdown lists. I watched the historical crime fiction link, but was too distracted by the guy's unruly mustache to pay attention! ;P

Terri (terrilovescrows) what about historical mysteries? Like one set in the 1920s?

How about?
Strong Spirits
Cocaine Blues
Maisie Dobbs
Mark of the Lion
Mortal Sins

Historical mysteries are fine. All the suggestions made by Dlmrose look good.

Yes. Even if the time periods were close, the settings are in different countries.

In post #7, Lisa defined historical fiction as any book published or set in a time prior to 1945. I'd say Beowulf qualifies.
