message 71: by Christa♥ (last edited Apr 17, 2008 05:37PM) (new)

Christa♥ (christaisqueen) | 24 comments THIS IS NOT FROM THE BOOK! "Three times a charm". While your first two attempts may have not been a success, the third try will be better because you have been through the rough beforehand and know the tricks to the obstacle you are going through. It is an American origin. The similar phrase "third time lucky" is used in Great Brittan also known as United Kingdom. Most likely meaning the same thing.

message 72: by Christa♥ (last edited Apr 17, 2008 05:54PM) (new)

Christa♥ (christaisqueen) | 24 comments THIS IS ALSO NOT FROM THE BOOK! "Dope" comes from a Dutch word (doop) meaning sauce. It started being used a drug term for smoking a sauce-like version of opium, which also comes with the idiom of "being sauced". People who used drugs were called "dopes" because they acted silly or stupid. Dope was sometimes was used to mean soda, probably because Coca-Cola used to contain cocaine, before it became illegal. Dope now means "cool or decent" and is still used to describe drugs.

I appreciate the research you have done to in order to provide true insight. Also, I believe that you have started to venture in the real of vocabulary words, which is our next discussion topic. Good job at anticipating the lesson! Keep it up!
