Rosamund | 3 comments Hi Vincent, I'm Rosamund Lupton, author of a book called 'Sister' which has been out in the UK since September and is published in the US in under two weeks - clock ticking and butterflies fluttering and all the other cliches you can imagine as the date gets closer. Have had some fantastic support from US authors, thank you Chevy Stevens and Lisa Unger. I see myself first as a reader, rather than an author, books are my passion..

Ophelia Finsen (opheliafinsen) | 2 comments Hello all! I've been on goodreads for quite a while now, but this is the first time I have joined/written on a forum here! I am quite hopeless with online technology. If I'm writing on the computer it tends to be writing fiction more than anything else =)

So, I'm Ophelia, I'm from the north of England, and I have self published 5 books so far, 2 short story collections and three full-length books, of which, my most recent book, set of the Scottish Isle of Skye (imaginatively titled Skye!) is the one I'm most excited about.

My books are POD and available on most online retailers, but to be honest, no one buys them! So I thought it would be fun to join a forum, say hi and meet a few like-minded people and maybe pick up a few tips as far as advertising/promotion (ideally free!) go.

message 1108: by Tim (new)

Tim Greaton | 32 comments Hi, Ophelia. Nice to meet you. I hadn't thought about that, but maybe some of the writers here do have suggestions for good "marketing threads" here on Goodreads or elsewhere. I welcome all friend requests, Ophelia. I just finished reading a book from another woman in UK :-)

Hi Rosamund! How are you? I worked in a book store for years until it closed last month, and your book was a big seller for us - and it was thanks to all the comments on goodreads that I was able to give opinions and comments on 'Sister' to my customers. We went through ten copies of your book in 1 day, which is fantastic for any author. It is on my TBR list, because while I was talking it up I had to grab a copy of it for myself.

message 1110: by Rosamund (new)

Rosamund | 3 comments How terrible about your book store - was it an independent? And thank you for your comments about 'Sister', wonderful to hear. I'm very grateful to the people who gave their opinions on goodreads. Hope you enjoy it, when you read it! Next book out in under two weeks and I'm feeling jittery...

It was a company store, and unfortunately there was nowhere else for me to go in the company - but on the bright side it's giving me more time to write and read. It was amusing one day - a lady came in and said she'd read a review in a magazine and the title was one word, and the author was a woman. I grabbed your book off the shelf, and amazingly it was the right one! Good luck with your next book - and I'm certain 'Sister' will be as good as everyone has said :-) congratulations!

message 1112: by Rosamund (new)

Rosamund | 3 comments I hope you find a job you love - maybe writing?? Love the story you told me - can't believe you managed to get 'Sister' from so few clues. Thanks for your good luck - !

Yeah, writing is what I love. I'm working on promoting my book, and it's quite a challenge but I'm enjoying it. But to tell you the truth, so many people came into the shop after reading 'Sister' to give us their opinion that I think you've got quite a devoted following in Adelaide's northern suburbs!

Kimberly | 10 comments My name is Kimberly and I am a 30 year old English Teacher from Pennsylvania, but moving to Arizona for the teaching job in less than a month!
I created a blog in January, and it has recently really started to pick up! I do reviews for authors of all genres and I also host giveaways. I currently have over 160 followers, and around 20 book review requests that I'm working on.
I am always open to more review requests by authors, and though I have a soft spot for historical fiction, I am open to all genres!
I hope to meet more great authors!

message 1117: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasinclair) This is embarrassing. I've been a Goodreads member for almost 2 years, yet only recently discovered the message boards and ability to create an Author Page.

I'm Rebecca Sinclair and I've published 13 books: 12 historical romance novels, 1 contemporary romance novel. I'm trying to get my backlist onto ebook, a project that is turning out to be a LOT more time consuming and complicated and costly than I'd ever imagined. When I'm not struggling with all that "fun", I can be found in the wee hours of the morning working on the second book in a YA trilogy. (Big change for me.)

I Tweet, I Facebook & MySpace, etc. -- for links, go to my website: http://www.rebeccasinclair.com -- what I don't do is blog. (Long story.)

I have no idea how these message boards work. OTOH, I've always gone with the feet-first/total immersion approach ... so I should probably apologize in advance for all the mistakes I'm going to make.

It's great to "meet" all of you! I rarely get a chance to talk to people who share my passion for books. Now that I know about these message boards, I may never leave Goodreads again!

Scott (scimarusti) | 1 comments Hello, everyone... I'm Scott, originally from the Chicago area now living in downstate Illinois. I've just joined Goodreads recently, and I'm still finding my way around here, seeking out groups of interest. I used to be an avid reader (Tolkien, Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, Crichton, to name a few) and I'm trying to get back into it and hopefully find some good recommendations here. I also write fiction as a hobby, having self-published a novel and some short stories.

Thanks!

Donald Van de Mark (Donald_Van_de_Mark) | 2 comments My name is Donald Van de Mark. I published my first book this year, The Good Among the Great: 19 Traits of the Most Admirable, Creative and Joyous People, in which I look closely at the traits common to the very few, very successful people who also happen to very good people.

I'm excited to announce that my book was #7 on the Boston Globe's Bestseller list last week, tied with Anthony Bourdain and one spot below Malcolm Gladwell. I'm equally excited to announce that my book is now available on Kindle as well.

I invite anyone here who has read it to let me know what you think!

Cheers,
Donald

Tichaona Chinyelu (tichaona_chinyelu) | 2 comments Hi,

I'm Tichaona (ta-SHOW-nah) and I'm a poet. I've self-published three slender volumes of poetry. I've also published three other writers (soon-to-be four). I guess that has morphed me into small press land but I'm still learning as I go.

My writing is personal, cultural and political but what writing isn't? (Don't answer that!)

My most recent book (published last year) is Contraband Marriage, an ebook/chapbook, which focuses on the personal; namely, my marriage to now ex-husband while he was incarcerated and other love matters. As the back cover text states:

"It is a love story written in lyric and free form, set in reality with a different ever after."

Contraband Marriage, as well as my other two books are available, through Smashwords and Amazon.

Larry Kahn (larrykahn) | 2 comments Hi, all. I'm an avid reader and love my Nook Color and have begun reading sites that will help me populate it with stories from little known writers who are trying to break out from the pack. I read mostly in the thriller/suspense genre. I'd love to hear your suggestions and help promote new authors.

I'm also a writer myself. My first novel, THE JINX, was released in 2000 but has recently been re-released as an ebook. It retails for 99 cents on most online bookseller sites. It received great reviews in Publishers Weekly and others, but my favorite blurb was from The Legal Times, which called it a "remarkably well-crafted book." My second novel, KING OF PAINE, is due out shortly. I will no doubt shamelessly self-promote it in the appropriate forum when it's released.

Larry

message 1147: by Larry (new)

Larry Moniz (larrymoniz) Congrats on the release and favorable reviews. Having been a crime and court reporter for many years, why the Legal Times? does your book involve a law firm or the courts?

message 1148: by Larry (new)

Larry Moniz (larrymoniz) Hi everyone, I'm Larry Moniz. To quote an old saying, I''m a "Jack of all trades and master of none." In case you haven't already guessed, that means I'm a writer. :-)
Actually, I'm a semi-retired journalist and publicist. In addition, I'm a working author. I published my first book as a trade paperback a few years ago. It's a self-help book on promotion for authors and is based on my experiences in book promotion and publishing. I also have contributions from a dozen others authors. Some are best-sellers, other just had clever promotional methods.
I've now released my first fiction book, a mystery/adventure set in New Jersey's Pinelands.
Putting the finishing touches on an earlier manuscript in historical adventure genre, and am also working on the outline of a detective novel set in the 1930s. Oh, I'm also the proud grandfather of three great kids ranging in age from 2 to 11.
Best to all.

message 1149: by Larry (new)

Larry Kahn (larrykahn) | 2 comments Thanks, Larry. The main character in THE JINX is a young lawyer, and the book touches on some interesting legal issues and gives an accurate feel for life in a big Wall Street firm.

message 1150: by Larry (last edited Jun 11, 2011 05:09PM) (new)

Larry Moniz (larrymoniz) Now THAT's smart, getting a legal trade pub to evaluate the book. That should carry a LOT of weight with prospective readers. Great job!
Now, I suggest you attach both of those reviews to an email pitch to other reviewers, local media outlets, etc. That should stir some interest among editors and reviewers. Nothing succeeds like success. ;-)
