Something is not right with George the shepherd. His sheep have gathered around him outside the cozy Irish village of Glennkill to assess the situation. George has cared for the sheep, reading them books every night, and now he lies pinned to the ground with a spade. His flock, far savvier about the workings of the human mind than your average sheep, sets out to find George’s killer, led by Miss Maple, the smartest sheep in Glennkill (and possibly the world).

Her team of investigators includes Othello, who was rescued from the Dublin Zoo; Mopple the Whale, who is always hungry and remembers everything; and Zora, an existential ewe—just to name a few. Together, the sheep discuss the crime late into the night, and their speculations vary wildly. Determined to unravel the mystery, they embark on furtive missions into the village, where they encounter a hoof-full of two-legged suspects. There’s Ham, the terrifying butcher who smells of death; Rebecca, the secretive village newcomer; and Father Will, a sinister priest the sheep call God.

With wit and heart, this clever international bestseller is a mystery to chew on—and savor.

Chapter Breakdown

Date Chapters MPDQs

2 July 1-4 Lexi (as nominator)
3 July 5-10 Melissa
4 July 11-15 Namita
5 July 16-19 Lisa
6 July 20-end Sam

Guidance for DQ setters
Aim for a reasonable number of questions: 4 - 5 is typical. Please don't post too many - any more than 7 gets unwieldy!
Use consecutive numbering of the DQs for your days. So, for example, if Day One is posted as questions 1-4, Day Two should start at number 5 etc.
Don't worry too much about your questions: you aren't being tested on how clever your questions are!
Hints and tips:
- Is there a quote that jumped out at you? Use that in a question.
- What about the characters - do they generate strong feelings? No feelings? - either way, we can explore that!
- What about that plot twist?!
- Explore the writing style: is there an unusual structure being used? what's the tone of voice like? or the point of view?

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?

Melissa | 2113 comments 1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

Truth be told.... I liked the cover......
I have not seen the movie - but I just might!

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?

Yes! My parents owned sheep. I think it is hilarious that the sheep find themselves more intelligent than humans. My mom might agree! They do have distinct personalities, so I agree with the sheep as a narrator. I'm not sure they have as distinct characteristics as the ones in the book, but who am I to say :)

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?

I'm sure, if sheep have deeper thoughts, they think about humans. I like their discussion of humans, and how they are not so intelligent, and how they don't have souls because they don't smell well. It seems a very sheepish opinion.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?

I'm starting to keep them separate. Miss Maple, of course, is excellent. I'm not sure about the whale one yet? Othello is going to be entertaining, I can tell. I don't know the other ones well yet.

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

I wanted to read the book because I thought it sounded interesting. And then I found out it just came out in theaters. My mom and I saw it in theaters (despite me lowkey hoping to wait til after I read the book, but I didn't want to say no to my mom). I loveeeedd the movie! Amazing. The book seems quite different though. It also is a little more confusing in my opinion on how it's not just following Miss Marple (who in the movie was the lead sheep)

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?

My only experience with sheep was watching a flock of sheep chase my neighbor when he jumped into their pasture. I'm going into the book with an open mind since I don't know a lot about them.

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?

Haha! I actually loved this! I loved how they didn't know a lot about the things George likely didn't talk much about. I loved how they misinterpreted Satan! That was hilarious! I'm enjoying reading through the minds of a sheep in this sense! I wasn't really surprised by any of the topics.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?

I'm doing ok although I do agree, there are a lot. I've had to reference the back of the book a few times (which I think is the perfect place to have the list of sheep names and descriptions. Kudos to the author/illustrator. Not sure whose decision that was but it was very smart). My favorites are Miss Marple, Othello, and Mopple the Whale. I also like the winter sheep, but I think that's more so from the movie because he was so cute!

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

I hadn't heard of this book or movie until the challenge. I watched the start of the book and it holds pretty close.

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?

No experience with sheep. It was interesting. I never thought of them in terms of kindness.

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?

Leonie Swann uses defamiliarization making the ordinary look completely bizarre to show how weird human behavior actually is when stripped of context.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?

I think I'm good with keeping track. It took a couple of chapters but I got them all. Mopple the Whale, Miss Maple and I loved Othello.

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

This has been on my TBR for a while, and I don't remember what review I read or if it was just the title or something that caught my eye. I just watched the movie, which was charming. The movie so far is different from the book, as we learn more about the sheep and their thoughts and interactions than they give us in the movie. I think they smoothed over some stuff and made it cuter in the movie. Plus, the death is different.

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species affect your view of sheep as the narrator?
Absolutely no experience with sheep that I can remember. Maybe a petting zoo when I was a kid? The farm that my grandparent's had, and the ranch that some friends have did/do not have sheep. Cows, chickens, goats, horses, yup. Sheep? No. I think they are adorable from afar, but I have always heard that they are stupid critters. I love seeing them as not that.

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?
I love seeing humans through the lens of something that does not have the same perspective, and doesn't know what is going on. I had no idea, for example that we are soulless beings due to our lack of smell. Who knew? teehee

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?
I think because I saw the movie, and was able to put a face to a bunch of the names that I am ok keeping track. The list of names helps too.

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

I only picked it up because it's a BOM.
When the movie popped up on Netflix.. or was it Amazon, anyways I persuaded my husband to watch it. As usual, the book and movie differ slightly but the general feeling is the same. (We both enjoyed the movie)

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?
Nuh, not sheep, we are cow people (Dairy farmers ) Our neighbours have sheep, they are annoying getting through fence eating our pasture. Lots of cow stories, but that's for another day, LOL.

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?

I guess the sheep are metaphors for human behaviour or observations of human behaviour. I'm thinking there will all sorts of subjects pertaining to the stupidity of humans over the course of the book.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?

There is a list in the front of the book which may be handy to keep the sheep straight. Having watched the movie (although the sheep names are different) does help.

Honestly I wanted to read the book for the rxtra points for Tower Teams. I had not heard of it before and although I have not watched the movie yet I will cuz Hugh Jackman.

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?
I used to live in a town in Colorado with an annual sheepdog festival so every so often driving through town you would have to stop and wait for the sheep to decide to move. So I feel this sheep narrator is very accurate.

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?
I think the discussions and the topic inclusions are both very cleverly done. I am pleasantly surprised so far.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?
I like the bit of personality with the names so that’s helpful for keeping them straight. So far Miss Maple, Sir Richard, Mopple and Zora are my favorites.

5. In these chapters, the sheep discuss morality of humans, with some humorous twists. Which resonate with you? Which do you find funny?

I find it funny, but so realistic that they hate the butcher. I mean maybe he is an awful guy, but that just made me laugh. I also found it funny when they were like "hopefully no one comes to find him."

6. The sense of smell seems to trump all other clues. What do you think about how a sense of smell plays into our daily lives? Should we rely on it more?

We obviously don't have as good of noses as most animals. In this book, it says the sheeps can smell when someone is being dishonest. I think that's so cool and would be an incredible skill lol. But I think relying on scent for things we can smell is important. Like if something is rotten, or burning, or just smells really good!

7. I love how George read mysteries to the sheep. Do you have any experiences with animals enjoying human art? Music? Being read to?

I've tried reading to my younger dogs. They curl up with me for a bit, but after a few pages they walk away and lay away from me at my feet. Must've gotten bored

8. Do you have any predictions on how George’s secret life will play out in the novel?

I do, but I've seen the movie (which so far is pretty drastically different than the book). I'm scared to spoil something

9. If you have seen the movie, are any characters who you feel are played particularly well?

I think the winter lamb is being portrayed well. Also Rebecca, although we've just been introduced to her. I'm finding George to be drastically different in the book than in the movie

It was picked as BOM and I love whodunnits, I have plans to watch the movie.

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?
I'm enjoying reading about their perspective of our world, it's so cute! I have zero experience with sheep and now I want a flock or two 🤭

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?
The sheep not understanding the church had me giggling.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?
I had to revisit the first page a couple of times lol, and now my favorites are Zora & Othello.

5. In these chapters, the sheep discuss morality of humans, with some humorous twists. Which resonate with you? Which do you find funny?
Their conversation about Mopple dying or becoming cloud sheep was funny to me.

6. The sense of smell seems to trump all other clues. What do you think about how a sense of smell plays into our daily lives? Should we rely on it more?
I enjoy discovering new scents and perfumes but I'd love it if I could smell danger or how far is the donut store!!

7. I love how George read mysteries to the sheep. Do you have any experiences with animals enjoying human art? Music? Being read to?
Sadly no, but that's what I loved about George the most.

8. Do you have any predictions on how George’s secret life will play out in the novel?
It sounds like he has something that everyone is trying to get and I'm very curious to know what it is.

9. If you have seen the movie, are any characters who you feel are played particularly well?
I haven't yet.

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?

I actually watched the movie last weekend and had no idea the movie was based on the book we were about to read until the credits rollesld and that was very much a duh moment. 🤣 i had seen tons of people reading it but had not made the connection at all that the sheep movie my kids were so excited to see had anything to do with the book!

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?

We kept goats when i was a kid but never sheep although we had friends that did! So i know a bit about sheep care but not breed or personality.

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?

I thought it was interesting especially as a translation.

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?

The movie definitely helps me keep things straight a bit! Otherwise i always struggle with a large cast especially on audio.

Jenny | 8529 comments DQs Day 2 Chapters 5-10

5. In these chapters, the sheep discuss morality of humans, with some humorous twists. Which resonate with you? Which do you find funny?

How they pretty accurately define a person, without having all of the history or facts in front of them.

6. The sense of smell seems to trump all other clues. What do you think about how a sense of smell plays into our daily lives? Should we rely on it more?
I have a pretty sensitive sense of smell, and sometimes it helps a lot. Sometimes I get an insta-headache from someone's perfume or cologne. I know in humans, smell can evoke memories, (Freshly baked cinnamon rolls take me right back to my grandma's kitchen.) so I wonder what it would be like to have a sheep's nose or a dog's. Not sure I would love it.

7. I love how George read mysteries to the sheep. Do you have any experiences with animals enjoying human art? Music? Being read to?
I swear my Siamese was watching tv the other day. Other than that, alas, no.

8. Do you have any predictions on how George’s secret life will play out in the novel?
I don't. I think it might be something like what they did in the movie, but maybe not quite the same. It does seem that everyone thinks he has hidden something, or has something worth a lot though.

9. If you have seen the movie, are any characters who you feel are played particularly well?
I thought most of the characters in the movie were played well. But, they all seem to be at least a bit different from the book.

Namita (-namita) | 829 comments DQs Day 2: Chapters 5-10

5. In these chapters, the sheep discuss morality of humans, with some humorous twists. Which resonate with you? Which do you find funny?

The book brilliantly shifts human morality into an "ovine perspective." The flock uses literal sheep logic to interpret complex human structures like justice, religion, and deception.

6. The sense of smell seems to trump all other clues. What do you think about how a sense of smell plays into our daily lives? Should we rely on it more?

Odours bypass the brain's main relay station and go straight to the amygdala and hippocampus. A single whiff of a specific soap or old book can instantly transport you back to childhood. Or the smell or rotten eggs tells you it's a gas leak

7. I love how George read mysteries to the sheep. Do you have any experiences with animals enjoying human art? Music? Being read to?

Yes, I do. Growing up, I had a puppy who loved watching movies with me and he would growl at the villains. He understood what was going on

8. Do you have any predictions on how George’s secret life will play out in the novel?

You know, the stash had me thinking of drugs but "grass" confirmed it. Dark and alarming is my prediction.

9. If you have seen the movie, are any characters who you feel are played particularly well?

Brian Cranston as Sebastian is fantastic and totally on point. Loved him.

DQ's Day 3: Chapters 11-15

10. In these chapters, Mopple the Whale often remembers things others forget. How does his unique memory style help the flock piece together George’s final hours?

11. How does the flock’s return to the cliffside or the trailer change their theory about who the killer is?

12. Miss Maple is considered the smartest sheep in Glennkill. How does she keep the flock focused when panic or distractions (like clover) take over?

13. How does the author contrast the peaceful, sensory world of the sheep (grazing, wind, smells) with the chaotic, stressful world of the human suspects?

5. In these chapters, the sheep discuss morality of humans, with some humorous twists. Which resonate with you? Which do you find funny?

What Namita said so well. Somehow the simple "sheep logic" is right on point. I'm not really finding the book funny however.

6. The sense of smell seems to trump all other clues. What do you think about how a sense of smell plays into our daily lives? Should we rely on it more?

Certain smells can take you back to your childhood for sure. If we pay attention to this particular sense eg a smell of gas or smoke, can certainly be a life saver.

7. I love how George read mysteries to the sheep. Do you have any experiences with animals enjoying human art? Music? Being read to?

Umm, no. But I haven't had any pets for a while..

8. Do you have any predictions on how George’s secret life will play out in the novel?

I'm wondering if it will be the same as the movie, so far the book is quite different. Actually I think this is the rare occasion where the movie is better than the book.

9. If you have seen the movie, are any characters who you feel are played particularly well?

I think Hugh Jackman brought a lot more to George than his part in the book. So far, we are not really getting a sense of who George was. He's a bit mysterious but maybe that's what the author was aiming for and it probably wouldn't have transferred well to the screen.

1. What made you want to read this book? Had you heard about it before the BOM? If you watched the recent movie, how is the start of the book matching what is in the movie?
It wasn’t on my radar until it became a BOM – so I’m reading for the points. But shortly after I was aware, I saw that there was a movie. Lol. I will watch the movie after I read the book.

2. Do you have any experience with sheep in real life /fun stories? How does your understanding, or lack of familiarity, about sheep as a species effect your view of sheep as the narrator?
No firsthand experience with sheep. I loved seeing them spotting the hillsides in the UK! No expectations going into the book. I consider myself open minded, so I’m good with the sheep narrating. 😆

3. What do you think of the sheep’s discussion of humans? Were you surprised by the author’s inclusion of any topics?
I’m really enjoying it, especially learning things about us humans that I wasn’t aware of! It’s quite funny. All us silly humans with no sense of smell and therefore no souls! Not surprised by any of the topics, really. I’m just enjoying the tale!

4. How are you doing keeping the different sheep separate so far? There are a lot of names. Do any stand out more than the others or any favorites so far?
I read the names list before starting the book. I’m doing okay keeping them straight, but I think it more due to their personalities instead of their names.

5. In these chapters, the sheep discuss morality of humans, with some humorous twists. Which resonate with you? Which do you find funny?
It seems their logic or insight is pretty spot on. I thought their description of the butcher and their hate for him was cute and seriously wouldn’t all farm animals hate butchers??

6. The sense of smell seems to trump all other clues. What do you think about how a sense of smell plays into our daily lives? Should we rely on it more?
Most people probably rely on their sense of smell more than they realize. I have a pretty good sense of smell and some scents are way too much for me (mostly floral smells or perfume) and will cause headaches almost immediately. Some scents spark memories. I would not want to have a sheep’s sensitive nose!

7. I love how George read mysteries to the sheep. Do you have any experiences with animals enjoying human art? Music? Being read to?
I’m sure animals love a good mystery just like we do! My cat would always stop to watch commercials when the tv was on. It was hilarious; dead stop as he was walking through when they came on. That is my only experience.

8. Do you have any predictions on how George’s secret life will play out in the novel?
No predictions really. Curious to see how it plays out.

9. If you have seen the movie, are any characters who you feel are played particularly well?
I haven’t seen it.
