Touch the Dark - Spoilers

I remember it starting off slowly. Am I imagining that or thinking of another book?

What's your opinion of Mircea? I love his character! He just someone that I am extremely attracted to and would love to get to know better!

Pritkin? Mmmmmm... yes, please. :)

Mircea is definitely attractive. Very suave and sexy. Love him.
Pritkin is completely horrid in this one. He's militant, ignorant and an all around ass. Just goes to show how adept a writer Chance is that so many of us have been converted to Pritkin lovers through the later books!
As for the slow start, there's First Book Syndrome going on for the first 60-odd pages. Info dump. But it all comes into play later on.

You know my opinion Michelle.
I think Pritkin has proven himself to be a deranged nutball when he tried to kill Cassie in this book.
And I don't think there is anything in the world that can change that first opinion for me
In my opinion everything that happened in the later book only gave an explanation for his behaviour, but no excuse. And for me that mostly let him look worse, and not better.

:)
Mel, on the other hand, is merely looney and obsessed.

There are as much as 6 Karen Chance related threads in two Goodreads-groups that I know of. Maybe that's why?

That could definitely be the reason.

Yeah, that's why I figured people would be really into reading this series for the mini reads. But I guess since the conversation is so intense in the other two threads people have stayed over there to talk.
Not that I mind, I was just curious.

Whaaa?
Jess, for some reason I completely missed that this was the December mini-read, but by coincidence I do happen to be reading it this month. So I'll jump in as I can. :)
I'm only about 100 pages in, but I think having read the whole series makes the info dump problem a lot less troublesome the second time around. And so far Pritkin doesn't seem quite as crazy as I remember him being in book 1.... rose colored glasses, maybe?

Um.
Duh?
:p

***Spoiler for EtN (book 3) **** Spoiler
Did we ever discuss whether Pritkin was part light Fey or dark Fey? I was thinking of how dis..."
Well...I suppose he thought he had to the best of his ability, with the sword tattoo, the runes, and the fact that he was going ahead alone to make contact. The downfall was that they did not make the quiet entrance they'd hoped to. Instead, they alerted the guard dragon right away!
As for what kind of fey he is, I don't think we were ever told...

The stealth aspect went flying out the window (and plummeted about 50 stories). Hell, even the SHOP came with!! How does a man prepare for THAT?!

I re-watched Generation Kill recently. I blame that for my acronym use. Love it.
Who thinks Tomas trying to convince Cassie to go with him in the MAGIC blowout was creepy? He sounded like a thinly masqued obsessed stalker psycho.

He was all: Come away with me, I'll have South America, I'll keep you safe. Besides, you're part of my betrayal reward. He promised I could have you.
Paraphrased, of course. Tee hee.

Oh there is a bell ringing somewhere in my head... I'm imagining Tomas now. Somehow I'm also imagining Gollum ....my precioussssss.
Funny what Tomas says about having South America (after reading Day of the Dead).
I always liked the part in his rant, when Tomas said that one of his new allies (Tony) wants to kill Rafe, but he will help her to keep Rafe safe, so Cassie should go with him:
Why should Cassandra help you?" Mircea asked, sounding as composed as if he and Tomas were having a polite conversation over tea. "What can you offer her that we cannot?"
Tomas glanced at Rafe. "The life of her old friend, for one." His eyes turned back to me. "I will guarantee Raphael's safety, Cassie, if you aid us. Otherwise, Tony has requested the right to deal with him personally for acting as Mircea's informant. You are aware what that will mean?"
"I help the people who want to kill one of your friends, but since I will help you to save him, you should help me", always cracks me up.

Nicole, you just have to marvel at the logic, don't you? It's quite mesmorizing. With that moment, he totally lost me. Creepy!!

I'm not sure whether to feel honored or insulted... ;)
But Michelle, Tomas might have totally lost you after that comment but I hope you forgave him after Day of the Dead?

Even though vamps are by nature possessive, he's so obsessed with what's been taken from him and how he wants to be perceived. He's kinda unhinged.
Mircea owns her according to vamp law, yet not even he acts that way. She's not some lil trophy to him. And LC has been through the wringer and yet is incredibly considerate and accepts Dory as capable and intelligent. Even with Pritkin's past, he's more likely to let Cassie go her own way rather than try to control her.
Tomas feels more like...a guy who would lock you in a room so he could keep you all for himself, like a pretty doll?
Day of the Dead changed that somewhat, but I'd need to see more of him to shake that feeling. I never liked what happened in Faerie either (trying not to spoil past TtD). I was surprised at what Cassie decided to do.

I just read the part in TtD where Rafe tells Cassie who the Consul is and that she wasn't bitten by an asp. Do we ever learn who she really is? I'm leaning towards Cleopatra.

I think the Consul is indeed Cleopatra. And contrary to popular belief Cleopatra wasn't killed by an asp. So I think that's why Karen Chance, the historian, put that comment of Rafe in the book.
Does someone have an idea, who the European Consul might be, or do you think he is no one we migth know from history? After the scene with him in CbS I always thought that he and the North-American Consul have a history.
Mel wrote: "I agree that he redeemed himself with Day of the Dead. And CbS somewhat.

Tomas was starting to loose me right at the beginning of TtD, when he wanted to compare all the bad things in Cassie's life, with all the bad things that happened to him. That is so not hot in my mind.
He has redeemed himself in my eyes, but that hasn't made him any more attractive to me. He is simply not my guy. I think I'm too choosy.

You dislike the two that display more psychotic tendencies. That just makes you...more rational, dear.
You're just not all about the freakish bouts of crazy. It's all good.
I, on the other hand, embrace the crazy in Pritkin. Bring on the angry sex! And Mircea and LC...they're a given.
But I still would not choose Tomas. He's a big bag of selfish crazy.
Consul...I have to read that part again. It's the party she shifts to, yes? With Mircea in traditional garb and he stops to chat with him?

If I read people with crazy tendencies, I'm not interested in Romance, but in a story where everything goes to hell. Either for the characters, or for the world around them, because the characters themself get everything they want.
For example, I'm still hoping that the Anita Black series, might make her into something of a psychotic Dark Queen of the World in succesion of Belle Morte (I don't see much difference between the two of them in the last books), but I'm pretty sure that won't happen. Too bad.

Yes, that part:
We stopped by the vamp in the toga. "Your Augusta is making herself very popular," he observed.
Mircea looked pained. "She is not my Augusta," he murmured, and the vamp laughed. He'd seemed plain before, with flyaway brown hair that looked like he went to Pritkin's barber and a wind-chapped complexion. But laughter changed the face entirely, adding animation to the whiskey-colored eyes and charm to the expression. When he laughed, he was handsome.
"That's not what she says.”
"As you should know better than anyone, Consul, some women are prone to exaggeration ... and fits of temper.”
"The more passionate ones," he agreed. "Although they are frequently worth the trouble. Speaking of passionate shrews, how is your Consul?”
"She is well. I wondered that you did not ask before.”
"Your news fair drove all else from my mind.”
"Shall I tell her so?”
That produced another chuckle. "Only if you wish to incite a war, my friend." The vampire hadn't so much as glanced at me, which I'd assumed was due to my status as party snack. But his eyes suddenly slid in my direction. "And who is this? Are you beginning a collection of dainty blondes, Mircea?”
But I might imagine things.

Well, if we take the toga into account, and put it into the same light as Mircea wearing his traditional garb...Mark Antony? It's a possibility. But there's nothing else there to draw definite conclusions from, merely speculation.
Anita Blake...oh, there are lots of things I could say on that topic, but that's best left for another thread...

And I still want Marlowe to end up with the Consul :D

Mel, J. Lo's hubby is definitely scrawny, but I can't deny his talent. One of my favorite songs is his, in Spanish. He really starts belting in out around the 3min mark. I gotta admire someone who can hold a note like that.
Preciosa - Marc Anthony

Oddly though, I don't like his English stuff. Sounds too...sappy and contrived? Everything sounds prettier in a foreign language.

If I didn't know what Alejandro had that kept LC from releasing Tomas I might have a bad opinion of him, but since I've read the other books I know that he wasn't holding Tomas to be a mean sadistic bastard.
