Janna (fortunateizzi) | 50 comments Ok, this is driving me crazy. There was a picture book I loved as a child about a girl and her big, hound-like dog named Boniface (I'm not positive about the spelling). I had forgotten about it until my mom just mentioned it. I have searched online, but can't find it anywhere.

I was pretty sure the title was Boniface, but I guess not. I believe the book was written anywhere from the late 1930s to 1960s because my great-aunt gave it to me and she probably originally read it to her daughter.

Help please!

M— | 379 comments You wouldn't happened to remember what sort of adventures the girl and her dog had, would you? The Boniface name is ringing a (faint, faint) bell for me, but not enough of one to let me remember anything helpful. (:P Naturally.)

ETA: There are a couple of Saints Boniface (wiki), so I suspect you are correct in how you've spelled the name. Is it possible that you might be thinking of a different B name? Barnabas, Barbatus, and Bonaventure are also saints' names, and I know for a fact there have been a couple of books with a dog named Barnabas. (Except one was an adult novel with the dog in a minor role and the other was a picture book published in 2006.)

(I could totally name a dog Bonaventure.)

Me, too! It seems so familiar.

Janna (fortunateizzi) | 50 comments I'm trying really hard to remember the plot... I just remember it was all a little strange. I seem to remember the dog burying things in the backyard which upsets the girl... possibly doll parts? I could be making that up, though.

I tried looking up books about a dog named Barnabas and came up with Barnabas, the Shaggedy, Raggedy Dog, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'm pretty positive it was Boniface because that's what my mom remembers, too.

Janna (fortunateizzi) | 50 comments My mom found the book in the attic! It's a French book called My Name is Nicole by Maud Frere, published in 1965. I'm so happy not only that I finally found it but that I actually still own it!
