Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I read a similar thread else where & it was hysterical. I thought the last, geekiest thing I did was walk into work & immediately look through 4 servers, several devices & a couple of computers. Someone read my profile & thought that going around tagging trees with their Latin & common names was even geekier.

Still, neither holds a candle to the person who spent over an hour reading up on the differences between warp speed in Star Trek & STNG, except possibly the other person who already knew the differences & corrected the wiki article.

So what is the last & geekiest thing you did?

Greyweather | 63 comments Well, I just wrote a review about a fantasy novel, that is a tie-in, to the sequel, of the sequel, of a video game, I played four years ago - and I only read it because none of my cohorts would.

A much better example though was the time I spent about 17 hours watching an animated Japanese TV show from start to finish, and then figured out precisely how the characters from the show were analogues to the characters of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

message 3: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments 17 hours of anime?!!! Wow! That is geeky.
;-)
Which one was it?

message 4: by Greyweather (new)

Greyweather | 63 comments Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

message 5: by Mir (new)

Mir | 21 comments Wouldn't the answer be the same for everyone here?

message 6: by Greyweather (new)

Greyweather | 63 comments As mine? I doubt it.

message 7: by Mir (new)

Mir | 21 comments I meant that we're all online talking about Roger Zelazny.

message 8: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments Good point, Miriam. ;-)

I've refreshed the NESFA site 3 times today looking to order the latest of his collection books.

message 9: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I took a little time today to fix up my computer. I have a bunch of movie clip files, so I changed some of the default sounds. Batty, a deranged, escaped lab bat in Fern Gully, played by Robin Williams, now says, "Oops! Gravity works" for my default exclamation. Gene Wilder, as Dr. Frankenstein, says, "It's Alive!" when I connect a USB device & Clint Eastwood says, "Marvelous" other times.

message 10: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments We always watch the Big Bang Theory. It's a riot. Have you ever seen The IT Crowd? It's a British comedy & I think it's on the Independent Film Channel now. The first season was great, the second OK, but I didn't care for the third.

message 11: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 23 comments Yesterday I went to a used bookstore and traded in some books. Lurked a while. I guess that's "Geeky" enough. But after I got my transaction done, I still had 4 dooars in trade left. I had not planned on getting enything, but here I was with this certificate for four dollars in trade, so I wandered around.

I found a second in an Elizabeth Moon series of which I had read the first installment a while back, and some diaries of Susan Sontag. "Geeky" enough choices, I guess. I went with the Sontag, only because it was hardback. Now I'm lost in '60's flower-power-ness. But it's long lasting.

message 12: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments Is that geeky? I thought it was just natural. Which Elizabeth Moon series? I've only read one of hers that starts with Trading in Danger. I thought it was pretty good. I got all 5 books in it, anyway.

message 13: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 23 comments Jim wrote: "Is that geeky? I thought it was just natural. Which Elizabeth Moon series? I've only read one of hers that starts with Trading in Danger. I thought it was pretty go..."

That's it. The "Vatta's War" series that begins with "Trading in Danger." I read "Trading" a while back, and I need to go on with the series. Good to have a good recommendation from it.

I associate Sontag with that New York Intellectual Woody-Allenish type geekiness. Maybe that's not so geeky anymore.

message 14: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I haven't read that series, although I have it. My TBR pile is just ugly. It may consume me soon. I must quit getting books, but that's a tough habit to break.

message 15: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 23 comments I knooooow how that feels!

message 16: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) A couple of months ago I watched the entire BSG series, 72 episodes, 20 webisodes and 2 mini-series in less than a week. My butt hurt afterwards.

Jim, I love The IT Crowd. Just one word: Moss
My British friends tell me it's coming back for a new season. Did you ever see That Mitchell and Webb Look, it's hilarious.

message 17: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I don't recall that, Jackie. I don't think I ever finished watching the 3d season.

message 18: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) Moss is one of the IT guys. He's so funny.

message 19: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments Oh, I remember Moss. I like the other one better (can't dredge up his name) & who is it that lives in the server room? Several people tease me about the show since the first thing I as when they have computer issues is, "Did you turn it off & back on again?"

That phrase was part of my voicemail message for a while - years before the show. My old boss had no sense of humor, though. When she told me to change it, I put in a recording of Spock saying, "Greetings, Earthlings." That didn't go over so well, either.
;-)

message 20: by Jackie (last edited Jun 07, 2010 09:39AM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) That's hilarious, some bosses just don't get the need for humor in the workplace.

I don't remember the IT guys' names either but I call the server room guy Marilyn Manson. I liked him a lot. Did you see the one where Jenn invites all three of the boys to a dinner at her house with some of her lady friends?

message 21: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments Oh, the guys at dinner was funny. I liked the one where the guy gets stuck under the desk & is too embarrassed to come out, though.

message 22: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) With the girls in the office? They have some crazy antics on that show. And that freak of a boss! That's a lawsuit waiting to happen, LOL

message 23: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I just got stuck in Cracked.com. This is a seriously fun site. Have you ever thought about immortals? Of course! Well, here's a list of the down sides. Very well done.

message 24: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Dec 09, 2010 10:45AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments Hi Jim (and all) to restart this...the last geeky thing I did? Hard to say...I reread all the Harry Dresden books recently... I also recently bought the entire TV run of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., I Spy, and Danger Man (Secret Agent in it's American run). Oh, and I joined in a conversation on a Roger Zelazny sight.... does that count?:)

I actually wanted to ask if you'd read any more Elizabeth Moon since your earlier comment? I'm not a big fan of her Space Opera, I have some. But...I'm a huge fan of The Deed of Paksenarrion (that's the one volume omnibus of the trilogy). I'd recommend it highly if you haven't.

Everybody has their favorites, (LOL).

message 25: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I used to love 'Man from UNCLE' & 'I, Spy'. I don't recall 'Danger Man', though.

I don't think I have read any more of Elizabeth Moon's stuff. I'm so overwhelmed by my TBR pile. I guess I have over 10' of books to read. I will keep it in mind, though. Thanks.

The last geeky thing I did was get the IT budget passed & then managed to talk them into upgrading the T1 to a fiber line. Wheee!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments I've been thinking of upgrading my computer for some time now...because there's an RPG I want to play that it won't run in its current incarnation...

Danger Man stared Patrick McGoohan (the man who stared in The Prisoner) and was called Secret Agent in America. There was a lot of talk that The Prisoner was actually the same character as Secret Agent, but MaGoohan always said it wasn't. But then all we Geeks realized that someone else owned that character and MaGoohan owned The Prisoner character, so he couldn't have actually said it was the same character...

Okay, big time geek. LOL

message 27: by Mir (last edited Dec 09, 2010 06:15PM) (new)

Mir | 21 comments Visiting Portmerrion (sp?) is on my list of geek things to do someday.

Mike, have you seen the cartoon Danger Mouse?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments No, I've heard of it but never saw it. Sort of a parody of British Spies (Danger Man, James Bond) and Mighty Mouse all rolled into one right?

message 29: by Mir (new)

Mir | 21 comments Yeah, but also with some Inspector Gadget and Monty Python. And some unique weirdness.

message 30: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments Portmerrion?

message 31: by Mohammed , Dilvish The Damned (new)

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) | 83 comments I have been a big fan of The Big Bang Theory since early this year. Its the ultimate geek show. Its fun to see a show that jokes about things you know well, get every reference. Specially if you like comic books,SF etc

Star Trek is the only thing im not a fan they talk about in the show.

message 32: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments The Big Bang Theory is a favorite of ours, too. My wife is a big fan of Star Trek. Both of us watched it when it first aired & have probably seen every episode half a dozen times. We have all the movies, too. I never cared that much for the spin-offs, but she loved both TNG & Voyager. Neither of us cared for Deep Space Nine or Enterprise, though.

The last geek thing I did was 5 minutes ago. I fixed a PC problem, then flashed the user a Vulcan salute & said, "May the Force be with you." as I left - that's typical. I have been able to do the Vulcan salute with either hand since the 60's.

message 33: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 84 comments I liked TNG a lot. I thought that DS9 was rather weak to begin with, but after the first couple of seasons it got really good.

message 34: by Dan, Jack of Shadows (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) | 59 comments I liked TNG quite a bit. DS9 took a little longer to warm up to.

The last geek thing I did was take charge of my girlfriend's adopt a family gift buying when I found out the little boy was into Spider-Man. It took me twenty minutes to decide which Spider-Man action figure to get him and which villain to get so Spidey would have someone to fight. I went with the Lizard.

message 35: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Dec 10, 2010 11:20AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments I date back to....DUN,DUN,DUN....the "REAL" Star Trek. (LOL) Never got into the Next generation much, they were always so "PC" and above it all, and Voyager was worse. When Janeway Pronounced that the Federation would have drummed Kirk and his crew out of Star Fleet "now" I was through. My wife was a big fan of Enterprise and I watched it with her every day on SyFy channel for the last two years of her life, so while I sort of liked it, I can't really watch it now.

I tend to watch Big Bang Theory the next year after it's come out on DVD...but I can't agree with Sheldon On Babylon 5...I'm a big Bab 5 fan.

And I still mourn Firefly.

GEEKS UNITE!

message 36: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I mourn Firefly, too.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments You have the DVDs right? Plus Serenity?

(I do of course.)

message 38: by Richard (new)

Richard Guion (giantsizegeek) | 4 comments Last geeky thing: after setting up a new Windows 7 64-bit computer, I wanted a new screensaver. I found this one:

http://www.mewho.com/system47/preview...

System47 is a screensaver that mimics the Star Trek computer screens, very cool. It shows TNG-era diagrams of the starships, space sectors, etc.

message 39: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "You have the DVDs right? Plus Serenity? (I do of course.)"

What a silly question. Of course I do! I even have them ripped to the computer. Haven't gotten around to doing that to Serenity, yet. I have all the original Star Trek episodes & movies, Twilight Zone, Evil Deads & Outer Limits, too. I mean, there are some necessities in life.

We won't go into Wizards, Zardoz, Young Frankenstein, the Rocky Horror Picture Show...
;-)

-----------

Very cool, Richard. Let me know how Win7-64 works out for you. So far, so good for my daughter. I've been avoiding it since I have so many older utilities. After seeing how MS screwed the pooch with that stupid Power Shell, I just didn't trust it for my main PC & haven't found any real reason to try it.

message 40: by Mohammed , Dilvish The Damned (new)

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) | 83 comments Dont you mention Firefly, it was a damn tragedy that Fox should be killed for....

Best tv show to ever be canceled in the twisted world of American tv !

message 41: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I'll second the deaths of Fox executives for that decision. Besides, they stuck it on Saturday afternoons with no advertising. Who watches TV on Saturday afternoons? I'm napping or working, but certainly not watching TV.

message 42: by Mohammed , Dilvish The Damned (new)

Mohammed Abdikhader Firdhiye (mohammedaosman) | 83 comments Im watching soccer,NBA on those days if im not working or have homework from school.

But swedish tv is not as dumb, all the good shows are on weekday nights.

message 43: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments The only sports we watch are horses; racing, eventing & such. Everyone at work is into football, baseball & basketball. I'm proud of myself when I can remember which a team plays or what season it is.

My first year at this job, I was informed that I had to do the pool for March Madness. The owner of the company & my boss were horrified when I asked what that was. Apparently it's college basketball. I told them I wouldn't - no knowledge & less interest. It didn't go over real big...

message 44: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I'm looking forward to this:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/digitaltrends...

Big Blue, Ken Jennings & Brad Rutter will face off on Jeopardy. The super computer isn't just Google on steroids, but will have to use natural language & do it quickly enough to beat the player with the most consecutive wins & the one who won the most money. How cool is that?!!!

message 45: by Jackie (last edited Dec 26, 2010 02:20PM) (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) Last night I cried while watching Doctor Who at the Proms when they showed the scene of David Tennant's Doctor regenerating into Matt Smith's Doctor.
At this rate, I will NEVER get over Tennant leaving us.

message 46: by Nathaniel (new)

Nathaniel Mathews (nathanielhm) | 4 comments Yeah, Matt Smith just doesn't compare. "I don't want to go," he said. I didn't want him to go either....

Of course, I still can't get over Tom Baker. David Tennant can't match up to him, either.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments Ah, another who remembers Tom Baker.

message 48: by Kara (last edited Jan 01, 2011 10:10PM) (new)

Kara (sterlink) Jim wrote: "I mourn Firefly, too."

Ditto.

Last geek thing I did? I tuned in to the Doctor Who marathon this morning (I'll note - I have liked all the Whos, though Matt Smith DOES have a baby face, which makes it kinda hard for him to come of as formidable).

I also understood an ongoing conversation concerning raid versus PVP gear and the best specs for Paladins.

Oh, then I got to work and went directly to the NWS website. =)

message 49: by Jim, Keeper of the Pattern (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 979 comments I've never gotten into Dr. Who, although I've enjoyed the few episodes I've seen. It's one of those things where there are so many episodes I feel lost. I probably should get the first season & start watching.

I'm slowly backing everything up from 4 different external drives to one new 3tb drive I got for Xmas. It's taking forever. The old 500gb drives are about ready to die. I've lost a couple of files due to disk corruption. So far, just two, but it's scary.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 12 comments I don't have near the computer files you do...but I've had a couple of crashes, can hurt. Thus Carbonite now. Good enough for us point and clickers I guess, LOL.
