This beautifully written book follows the story of 71 year old Captain Kidd who ends up responsible for 10 year old Johanna. Johanna was captured by the Kiowa Sioux during a raid on her parents homestead, and she's lived with the Sioux for 4 years. After being rescued, someone needs to escort her home to her remaining family (and aunt and uncle) in San Antonio.

But Johanna didn't want to be rescued. She's assimilated to life with Sioux and doesn't even remember her old life. And Captain Kidd certainly didn't want to end up responsible for a child. So they form a very unlikely pair.

As they travel across Texas, they encounter brigands, the somewhat unfriendly Union army, and very unscrupulous men bent even worse than theiving. As they work together to survive, the two form a bit of a family bond.

Ultimately a very heartwarming story. A wonderful movie with Tom Hanks has been made from this book. It strays from the book here and there, but both book and movie are really good.

This is a terrific story. It is true that some children, and women, who were taken by native tribes didn't want to return to "civilization".
