message 152: by Kara (new)

Kara | 2 comments definitely the hunger games. as much as i hate to compare the two, katniss kinda reminds me of bella because she is in love with two guys and the whole love triangle thing. but the hunger games is SO much better!!:)

message 153: by Aaron Vincent (new)

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) Katniss is no way like Bella. Katniss is a strong independent woman. While Bella, on the other hand, is weak, stubborn, and dumb.

But I guess it is better to say a lot of things, explain everything than repeating the same words again and again. It is reasoning and not babbling. No offense though, but I could handle more Jillian's long post than your Gale posts in the other discussion board., Sorry for being rude.

I understand what your saying but twilight has been publicized more than hg because of the cast and everything, don't get me wrong I like twilight aswell but I'm sick to death of all these twihard fans that have every collector item. To me it isn't about the books anymore but with hunger games not so many people know about it which in a way is a good thing because we get to consentrate on the books but when the film is coming out it might all go like twilight has, which would be really annoying tbh.

I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES

That's because I have yet to find somewhere that sells THG shirts or pins. :(

Oh dear, what are "discussion" for, if not for "arguments". I'm not talking about yelling, babbling, or whatever, but standing for your point of view and defending what you believe. So here's my answer to the arguments you raised.

One. Yeah, Twilight had also the same Bestseller Awards but for the more serious awards like Editor's Choice Awards or Notable Book Awards, I really dont think so. Why? Because Stephenie Meyer's prose are really bad. It's like she needs to review grammar lessons. No, that's not only coming from me but also from numerous critics. And the plot, is really really crappy. Is it something that the more serious readers would read? Let's say readers of Stephen King, Ken Follett, Josh Grisham, Dean Koontz? I doubt. But I have friends over 30 and 40 who reads those authors liked THG.

Number two. Twilight is better just because its on pins and tshirts? You are basing the quality of book from its popularity. Let's use Comac McCarthy's The Road as an example. It is not been on pins and tshirts but no one can deny that it is a damn good book. It received the Pulitzer Prize and been named by Times Magazine as Book of The Decade. You get the point? Popularity is not a basis for quality. Somehow, I really would not like THG became THAT popular because if something gets really popular, it becomes a novelty. And when it becomes a novely, it begins to suck. Like everyone is claiming they are hardcore fan, when in fact they are going with the flow so that they will look "cool". They don't even understand the book. What word was coined for this people?! Twihards. Definitely, I dont want to have this kind of people for THG.

Well, that is my two-cents worth.

well just because people don't have shirts and buttons doesn't mean it's not as good. I just think that Hunger Games hasn't been as publicized as much as Twilight that's just my opinion

and I DO have a shirt! XD

message 172: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Norcliffe (i3books1234) | 4 comments That's what I was trying to say. I didn't mean it to look like an argument, it's just how it was worded I think. I just wanted to state the point that it's not publicized like twilight and therefore you might not be able to find and collectors item that you want.

Sorry.

TEAM PEETA!!!!

sorry, but that is for Candice. I have no arguments for your posts. We're on the same side. And as i have said, arguments are the purpose of discussions like this. It's like in a debate, it doesn't matter who is on the right side. What matters is who raised the more convincing arguments. :)

Summer | 508 comments LOL! I agree... even though I have a CF shirt and an HG pin. I won them in a contest but I was mostly in it for the book. I'm a bit broke as a teenager, anyhow, all the hype with twilight does make it kind of annoying to outsiders even.

message 178: by Jessie (new)

Jessie Hunger Games is heads above Twilight.

There haven't been very many books in which there has been a strong female main character. Not one for young girls to idolize. And along comes Twilight with Bella and suddenly it's an amazing book in which everybody loves. But I think that having Bella be such a week heroine was a bit of an insult to women. Women have been treated less then men since the 1600s when all we were good for was making babies, and still today there are men who think that we need to be taken care of and that we need a man by our sides. Bella is a timid girl however that would be okay if she wasn't such a weak character. If she could pull her own weight from time to time, her timidness would just be a cute quirk. (if you want an example of a timid yet strong girl, just look at Hinata from Naruto.) But Bella isn't strong. She can't even cross the street without someone holding her hand. She can't stand a summer without Edward even though she knows that she is going to see him when school starts off again. She can't last two seconds without Edward. And what is Edward's problem? I can understand why he thinks he's a monster but he could at least accept his fate instead of acting all emo and tragic. That's what Jacob did when he turned into a wolf for the first time, and that's what Zero from Vampire Knight did when his vampire instincts overpowered his human instincts. (ya he moped a bit but at least when yuki told him that she wouldn't give up on him he was able to accept his fate instead of pushing her away like a certain sparkling granite-head I know....)

And that ends my rant on the characters......
.....and begins my rant on the way the story was written.

There was too much talking going on that told the story. Not to mention hardly any action. The ending was the worst action scene I've ever read but it was the best part of the whole book. It was so short that it gives off the idea that her editor told her to add that in so it wasn't just some sappy romance that Miss Jane Austen herself would deny placement amongst her collection. If she had written the book in third person instead of trapping us in Bella's mind, it would've been much more interesting.

Katniss is much more of an idol to young girls. She's strong and she doesn't give up. There was enough action to leave you breathless, there was enought romance to leave you wanting more, and there was enogh characterization to leave you feeling like there is some sort of connection between you and them. It's almost as if Katniss were telling the story for you and you only.

Now as for Peeta or Gale....I really don't mind who she ends up with. both of them are good matches for Katniss, and they can bring out a part of her that nobody else can.
But personally, I'm Team Gale. Mostly because I prefer a man who can hunt and survive in the woods than one who can bake bread any day. Although Peeta's artistic skill does give him some huge points.

And I am sorry for posting something this long. When I get on the subject of Twiliglht it's hard for me to stop. You should see some arguments between me and my close friend and hard core twilight groupie Ashley. we go on and on and on....I LOVE YOU ASHLEY!!!
*ahem* and I apologize for my manga reference. I am an anime/manga nerd. And i kinda gave out a huge secret about Zero from Vampire Knight....I'm sorry.

alright. I'm done. until someone else brings up another twilight argument....

message 179: by Carly (new)

Carly | 286 comments wow.................. Any Twihard is going to be pretty scared now. And me and you share the same views. Twilight is Four Books in which we hear her complain for 500 pages. She is so misrable all the time and she is choosing between 2 guys who like her. I have heard about worse things.

message 186: by Varna (new)

Varna | 10 comments I would reccomend both, but you can't exactly compare them. they don't fall into the same exact catagory if you look at it from all perspectives. Hunger Games is mainly Sci-Fi and the Twilight Saga is mainly fantasy.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 119 comments Mod
I think that any two books are comparable, whether they're similar or not.

For example (these are all just my opinions):
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is better than A Mango-Shaped Space
The Lightning Thief is better than And Then There Were None

Books with very different themes can be compared.

I don't really mind who she ends up with though. Both of the guys are great.

message 197: by Emily (new)

Emily | 9 comments Same here, I just really don't want here to kill Peeta. Remember in Catching Fire, how I the end of the chapter he supposedly died, well I totally flipped out, and I cried for like three days, and acted all emo and depressed, and my friends thought I had finally lost, then two weeks later, when I finally pick up the book again, and the next chapter is like, " Then Finnick gave him CPR and saved his life" I totally freaked and threw the book at my mirror, which then broke. Thank you Suzanne Collins.

Kamee (kameem) | 4 comments Hahaa.

Yes, he hit the forcefield. I was about to break into tears when I read that part, until I finally read on. I couldn't live without Suzanne. If she never wrote this series, things just wouldn't be the same.
Do you recall that part when Mags walked into the fog? I get why she did that but then again I don't. Couldn't she walk?

When I got the Peeta dying part I looked up, took a deep breath, and read on. I was stressing.
