Posted this on one of THG forums. I guess., I should also post it here:I'll present the following arguments first before answering this question.
1. Inspiration vs. Book
It is very important where the authors got the ideas for the plot of the book.
Twilight
Although Meyer didnt mention that one of her inspiration is LJ Smith's Vampire Diaries Series, it is clear that she read this series because a couple of scenes in her book were somehow is like a copy-cat of the scenes in Smith's series. For instance, the scene in the meadow where Edward shows Bella his powers with the lines like "As if you can outrun me..etc.." and showing what violence he can do, it is very similar when Elena discovered Stefan's identity in Stefans room saying lines like "your bones(while breaking a piece of twig)". And in my humble opinion LJ Smith's is way way better than Meyer's. But I wont go further explaining why because it's a THG vs. Twilight topic. So in inspiration vs the book, definitely the inspiration which is VD is way better.
The Hunger Games
Again although Collin didnt really mention Battle Royale is one of her inspiration, its pretty obvious it is. Battle Royale ,for me, has a good plot but its feeling while reading the book is so negative. The setting is very dark and full of angst. Clearly THG is better than its inspiration.
2. The Plot
Twilight
Like what other people say, its plot branches left and right before going directly to what the conflict really is. And I dare to say, the next scenes after one scene is pretty predictable. It is a pleasure to read it but you can manage to read it in span of days.
The Hunger Games
I guess a lot of people would agree that everything in the book is so unpredictable. You think that a scene is already intense but the following scenes get more intense catching you off guard. It will just leave you breathless chapter by chapter. And how many people read it until the wee hours of the morning? a lot. But how many people managed to set the book aside first doing other things like sleeping, doing household chores, doing assignments, listening to teachers? Slim to none.
3. Isabella Swan vs. Katniss Everdeen
Maybe I dont have to put a lot of argument about this one. I mean , a lot of people are pissed about Bella's decision and actions. She is stubborn, selfish and very vulnerable. On the other hand Katniss is such a strong character. She is tough, smart and selfless. Bella didnt want Edward dead because she wants him for her, she cant live without him. While Katniss dont want Peeta dead, because she believes he is a good man and deserve to live life more than she deserve her life. Who can be a good role model for a lot of girls? Katniss. Being a guy, who would I rather date? Katniss. If Edward or Jacob will meet Katniss, would they fall for her? Maybe. If Peeta or Gale will meet Bella, would they fall for her? Not a chance.
4. Edward & Jacob vs. Peeta & Gale
Okay. I know comparing these guys is tough. And a lot of fangirls will get mad at me dishing these guys. So Ill just bring up the positive(if I see any) and negatives.
Edward Cullen - I really do think this guy is a jackass. Sorry but I really dont see anything in him that would please me. He's not even gentleman. Absolutely I dont want to be like him. As promise, Ill try to state some positive, uhm. he's strong, fast, a mind-reader and a good poet. Period. Nothing more. (Again. Sorry if I have offended a lot of fangirls.) Would he have a lot of followers without his "staggering" good looks? I dont think so.
Jacob Black - I think its pretty obvious that Im in favor of this guy rather than the douchehead. He has sense of humor(unlike the boring Ed), he is passionate and he dont have to use words for him to show how passionate he is, it just shows. Yeah, A lot says he is manipulative, but wouldnt you fight for the one you love? Wouldnt you use even your last desperate chances to win the heart you truly desires?
Peeta Mellark -(The name doesnt give justice to the character at all. Not Fair) He is charming, selfless and a really great guy. If he loves someone, he truly loves. (In his case, his love is not that over the edge unlike what the douchehead poses) Somehow Peeta reminds me of Nicholas Sparks' male lead characters. Romantic and Giving. He is very willing to spare Katniss for Gale cause he thinks K will be happier with G even if Katniss is his life and the only person who show care for him. There is only one thing negative for this guy, he is physically weak. Katniss always saves his life. But who can blame him? He is a baker for crying ouy loud, not a vampire, werewolf or anything.
Gale Hawthorne - He is completely the male counterpart of Katniss. Tough and smart. Gale may be only present in few parts of the book but people get to like him despite of that. I personally amaze by how he can be such a good competition for the heart's of the readers to Peeta even if Peeta gets more spotlight. So Im thinking what if the spotlight is equal? Would Peeta still get the same amount of support to the reader? I dont know. Like Jacob he is pushy and manipulative. But like what I said, fighting for your desire isnt really wrong.
5. The Love Triangle
Edward - Bella - Jacob
Even from the start, its pretty obvious that who ends up with who. For the Team Jacob like myself, hoping that Jacob wins Bella is just pure wishful thinking. Well, a girl can dream and a guy can hope. :) I like the Ed-Jake moments, full of heart, pain and tension especially the one in the tent. Im still happy for the turnout though. Bella is stubborn, Ed is douchebag, somehow they deserve to be together.
Peeta - Katniss - Gale
Like I stated earlier, even if Peeta gets more of the spotlight, Gale still poses a great competition for Katniss' heart. We dont really have any idea to who Katniss will end up with. There is a huge chance, to Peeta but also a huge chance for Gale. Now, that's what I call a real love triangle. Im looking forward to Peeta and Gale moments, basing from their personalities, Im sure it'll be something that is very touching. And thinking someone between the two being brokenhearted because K did not chose him is just heart wrenching.
6. The Other Characters
It's not that important though, but I want to prove Im not bias so I will state something that somehow redeems Twilight.
Twilight
There are lot of cool characters, like Alice, Emmett, Carlisle, Seth, some other werewolves and even the Volturi. They are just awesome.
The Hunger Games
Yeah, there are characters we love, like Rue, Cinna, Haymitch even Effie. We grow to love them. And seeing them suffering at some points just breaks our hearts but I believe they lack some awesomeness factors.
7. Relevance
Like other books, these two leaves us with lessons.
Twilight
It makes us appreciate the power of love. The dangers it can defy and makes the seemingly impossible be possible.
The Hunger Games
Same with Twilight, the power of love. At the same time, how to appreciate life. The virtue of selflessness. Our freedom. And our power against our leaders. That what I call entertainment with value.
Results:
1. Inspiration vs. Book : The Hunger Games
2. The Plot : The Hunger Games
3. Bella vs. Katniss : The Hunger Games
4. Edward & Jacob vs. Peeta & Gale : The Hunger Games
5. The Love Triangle : The Hunger Games
6. The Other Characters : Twilight
7. Relevance : The Hunger Games
And now for the ultimate question which is better? Simple: The Hunger Games
(Sorry for keeping this looong, maybe the longest post in this forum, but I really want to state every possible argument) :)

You go on those forums too?! What's your username? I'm looney-lovegood. :D
I love all of your points and agree with you on that. :D
My copy-and-paste response, which is pretty tiny in comparison to your epic ;):
"The romance in the Hunger Games was really great. I am very, very picky about romance, and if I like the romance in a book, then I consider that book pretty impressive. The romance in Twilight was the worst part, in my opinion. Honestly, I wasn't really a big fan of most of the romance in Harry Potter either.
The characters in Hunger Games are amazing. I care about all of them (with the exception of Snow, for obvious reasons), and I don't want anything bad to happen to any of them. In Twilight, I really hated the two main characters. I loved every who wasn't called Edward or Bella, but the two who were really could have fallen off a cliff (and not been saved by a werewolf) for all I cared."

I kind of wish we had another set of new commers come in all the suddens so we can get some fresh debates going. It's been awhile besides this.

Sorry guys for keeping it loooong., But I just want to stress all the points. I think by stating everything, we saw how clear THG is way better than Twilight. :)

Sydney wrote: "I hope u don't mind that I posted it on my school's group. I thought it was amazing"Nope I dont mind. Actually I think that was flattering. Thanks. But I hope you stated that you get it from somebody else, because the arguments I brought is kinda clear that it came from a guy's point of view, and your a girl. It might mislead. :)

obviosly hunger games. Vampires don't belong in romances. everything about hg seems to fit in the best books ever catagory.

lol HUNGER GAMES ALL THE WAY!!!!!

      i absoulutly HATE twilight! lol

I agree with Rachel. I'm picky on romances too and with twilight it was just disquting for me. I felt like i got to know the charaters in the hunger games more than in twilight. After i read the first book i never wanted to read anything else but it wasn't like that for twilight. a lot of people have ruined twilight for me maybe if i had read it before it got huge then i might like it but...

I think in Hunger Games we really got to care about the charecters and in twilight it is just her complaining about how unhappy she is

haha ya i think thats sooo true!

the romance in both series is somewhat similar with the whole love triangle thing. But The Hunger Games is better, I think. I was obsessed with Twilight...but not anymore, and I think The Hunger Games will last longer

No, I think vampires can be romantic. I also find some things about Twilight vampires rather interesting. I just prefer traditional vampires, and I don't like most stories with that much romance.

I'm really sorry, but when I saw the "Vampire Baseball Game" bit I laughed a bit to hard for my own good.

i love the hunger games i trully hope they dont f*** up like twilight. catching fire is awsome, i love peeta

I was obsessessed with Twilight. It became a movie, everyone became overly obsessed, It annoyed me, kinda stopped loving it. I am like, obsessed with Hunger Games, I don't want what happened to twilight to happen to hunger games. That is why I don't want hunger games to be a movie.
