Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Post here if you have read our December/January GR Authors selection, The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I read it earlier this year. I'm debating about rereading it, though, because I don't think I remember enough details to really discuss it.

William (wilbarr17) I read it back in spring. I may reread once I finish classes.

message 4: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) I read this about a year ago. My brother in law wants to borrow my book and read it. I'll have to rely on my memory. I loved the whole series.

Pamela (pamela128) One of my favorite series. Weeks doesn't take his material from the foam off top, he digs to the bottom of the barrel, the dirt, the grim, the nastiness left over and creates some of the best characters from it. Prostitution rings turn midnight killers, teachers that beat the living shit out of their students, enemies become friends, slow death twist into long lives or many lives, however you choose to look at it. In all the madness, you end up virtually loving the majority of these characters. I would like to slap V, just because, then I think I can like her.

This was simply entertaining. Great characters (Momma K was my favorite), descent plot and overall fun read.

meleah (meleahreads) read it just a few months ago

Andrea (iichron714) read it not long ago.

Josh | 53 comments Just finished it today and loved it. I'm already eager to get and read the next two.

message 9: by Usinger (new)

Usinger | 19 comments I liked the three books but not equally:

Book 1 - great, innovative
Book 2 - Not so great, dull in places
Book 3 - starts slow, ends strong.

Overall: Solid B work.

message 10: by Rita (last edited Dec 08, 2009 06:38AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rita Webb (ritawebb) I just finished the book late last night, and then I think I dreamt it all night.

message 11: by Carl (new) - rated it 3 stars

Carl Brooks I finished it about a week ago. I am excited about learning what happens to Kylar and Logan. I also hope there is a bit more elaboration on the back history of the story and how Durzo became a Wetboy.

Christopher (christopherkerr) I just finished it. I find most books are words that guide to to sleep at night, yet few entertain me. This book not only entertained me but had me looking forward to my next opportunity to read. I really enjoyed the characters, the twists, and the obscene amounts of weaponry strapped to the characters.

Favorite lines: - not to accuracy
"Go f my daughter!"
"We have to go meet my wife, I wonder who she'll be."

Cheers
~Chris

Rita Webb (ritawebb) Chris, those were good lines. Especially the "We have to go meet my wife..." line.

My favorite line is this:

"You're not sh** unless I say so!" the king said. He strode forward, coming down his double flight of seven steps to stand in front of Durzo. Tactically, a poor move. He was now blocking at least three of the archer's shots. "You're . . . you're sh**! You sh***ing, sh***ing sh**!"

"Your Majesty," Durzo said gravely. "A man of your stature's cursing vocabulary ought to extend beyond a tedious reiteration of the excreta that fills the void between his ears."

The king looked momentarily confused.
--The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks, page 368

Now in my opinion, that's the way to insult somebody.

message 14: by Jon (new) - added it

Jon (jonmoss) | 529 comments Finished The Way of Shadows (my review) this evening. A real page turner, which surprised me. I have to agree with Rita - Durzo's response to the king's lack of profane creativity was priceless.

Pamela (pamela128) Starting rereading this series trying to come up with some discussion questions. I think I am partially tainted having read all three books.

Read his acknowledgements at the end. Especially the last paragraph. Love it!

Most obvious question; Favorite character and why?

What does Weeks offer us that sets him apart from other fantasy novels?

Favorite scene or conversation?

I should be completed with the first book tonight or tomorrow with hopes of coming up with more detailed questions. If anyone can contribute please do!

Christopher (christopherkerr) I'm ready to discuss and answer questions but please do your best to not delve into the contents of Books 2 or 3. For the sake of discussion and sanity of those whom haven't completed the trilogy the continuity should stop at the end of book 1.

Thanks gang.
~Chris

Brandy *Ahviel* (ahviel) I read them when they first came out. I love this series and can not wait for the next book to come out which is supposed to be 17 years later

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Actually, while you're free to talk about the book, the 'official' discussion will begin on January 1st for the group as a whole. At that time, you can expect to see more topics added under the book's folder. We will probably have a spoiler thread for books 2 & 3, like we did with The Blade Itself.

It's great that so many are reading or have read, and that y'all are anxious to get to discussions.

Pamela, based on your post, I have to ask if you are volunteering to be our Discussion Leader?

Pamela (pamela128) Chris wrote: "Pamela, based on your post, I have to ask if you are volunteering to be our Discussion Leader? "

No thanks. Just want a discussion. I'll wait till January. Gives me time to reread all three.

Brandy *Ahviel* (ahviel) I am with you pamela. I think I will have to re-read all three books before that time. Maybe during christmas break :)

Fox (foxmists) | 218 comments Read this a while ago. Loved the series. Looking forward to a discussion. :)

~Sara~ I just finished reading this and if you look at the time of this post, you can tell I couldn't put it down! I'm glad I left it for later in December to read; now I don't have to wait as long for the discussions :)

Regina Heater (reckshow) Just finished yesterday. Looking forward to the discussion.

Pamela (pamela128) “Love is a noose.”
There are several themes throughout this series. How many have you found? Which do you think is most crucial the story? Additionally, construe them to your everyday lives as non-assassins.

Blint, Momma K and Count Drake offer and education to young Kylar. Which had the most impact on older Kylar and how?

Weeks tended to make up some new words in this story (ie Ka’kari) Do you have a clear understanding of them when introduced? If not, did it distract from the story?

Favorite scene?

Favorite Character and why?

What sets Brent Weeks apart from other fantasy writers?

And because I love Fan Art….

If anyone comes across Fan Art of Doll Girl, please post. I did not come across any.

Once I complete, I should have some more questions.

Enjoy!!!

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Awesome questions, Pamela! Thank you. If you don't mind, I will start some threads for the questions. That way we won't be posting all over each other in this one.

Keep 'em coming...this is just what we need to get the discussions going.

Great Fan Art, Pamela!

I loved that one with Durzo telling Azoth to look on DOll-Girl's scars. That's a strong one. I also loved that part in the book.

Michael (keisu) read it. At first I thought I wouldn't like it. It took me a while to really get into it, then I loved it

Pamela (pamela128) Michael wrote: "read it. At first I thought I wouldn't like it. It took me a while to really get into it, then I loved it"

What turned you off about it at first? When did it get ya?

I agree. That scene is pivotal point in the story and gut wrenching.

Every moment doll face and Kylar are together, I eat it up. There relationship is just so innocent. Her character developed into a perfectly flawed women that you can't help but love. Kylar reverts back to being eleven every time he's with her. Which is adorable. I am a sucker for a love story and reading theirs is just too sweet.

Pamela (pamela128) I just finished the re-read. This book was even better the second time around! Brent Weeks is a-m-a-z-i-n-g!

Sarah, I don't know if you're a sucker for a love story like I am BUT I completely forgot the next two books introduces a very sweet and abnormal romance. Actually it offers two of them. Weeks did a wonderful job of weaving these honeyed tales into an otherwise gritty, darken story

Really? I'm so excited to get to the next books. I only bought the first one to see if I liked it. SO far (less than 100 pages till the end) I'm loving it, and I'm sure I'm going to read the next ones.
An dI LOVE well done, sweet love stories!
Oh!!! Can't wait!

Pamela (pamela128) More Fan Art.

Still haven't found anything on older Doll Girl.

I don't know, I don't think there was any particular moment. It just grew on me. I'm on the third book now

They’re hard too put down. When I purchased the first book, five chapters in I put it down, went back to the book store and purchased the other two. I am going to post a comment about Vi in the Night Angel # three section... Let me know what you think of her!

Michael (keisu) I know :) every day for over a week I have been limiting sleep because it's so good, like, "just a little more". Thankfully I have a ebook reader(Amazon Kindle) so I haven't had to wait for the stores to open during the holidays. Practical, heh.
