Feeling a little regretful at having purchased The Glass Castle...

message 1902: by Ruby (last edited Sep 26, 2011 07:59AM) (new)

Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) Finished The Passage this morning (and really liked it) and have started on The Brief History of the Dead (and loving it so far).

I've also read a couple of short stories from The Penguin Book of the City & discovered the work of Jess Mowry.

I've also been browsing The Complete Poems of Anne Sexton and loving that very much.
It's been a really good week for books :)

Have you started reading it yet?

Take it back! Take it back and get a refund! Before the walls start bleeding or something...

Jammies, you are such a comfort to my soul. :)

If you have any love in your heart for they dysfunctional family dynamic, you will love Glass Castle.

message 1908: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) Just looking at the Glass Castle blurb, it sounds a little bit like Running with Scissors and some of Augusten Burroughs's other autobiographical stuff. Has anyone read both?

message 1909: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments yep, loved them both. Dysfunctional with sweetness and humor.

Thanks for the rec! Sounds interesting. Added to my TBR.

Glass Castle is crap. Half Broke Horses is a more interesting story and gives some clue why everyone in GC was such a mess. Maybe Horses was better for me since I knew the places in the book. Still I wouldn't read either again.

I think I'll have to make another selection for now. I've been carrying these books around since last week and none of them is "talking to me".

Sounds like you need an audiobook.

Why was Glass Castle so crappy? Someone explain to me, in 300 characters or less.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I'm thinking of reading a frequently contested book in honor of Banned Books Week. I think I'll go with A Wrinkle in Time, as I've been meaning to read it for a while, and it was the pre-Potter poster child for "evil" magic influencing The Children.

King of the Badgers: A Novel.

I notice Books got moved way down.

Appropriate, on a books site.

I enjoyed this. Funny. (That is not a judgement on the gay orgy scene which left me feeling a little morose.)

If you enjoy gay orgy scenes, you will like this one.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I have too many books going on at once. I can't seem to maintain interest in anything long enough to finish any of them, even though I like all of them.

The Mists of Avalon
The Whole Five Feet: What the Great Books Taught Me About Life, Death, and Pretty Much Everything Else
You Deserve Nothing
What Good Are the Arts?

Starting Wizard for Hire (The Dresden Files, #1-3) by Jim Butcher So far it doesn't look as promising as I was hoping. Everything seems a little flat after A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness

message 1950: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I gave up on Map of Bones and have started Anansi Boys.
