Ruby Tombstone Lives! (rubytombstone) I have to admit, I have it on my shelf, but I've never gotten around to it. Too many films I think! Plus I dated a goth for a few years there. I'm a little bit over vampires! I'll take a nicely decaying zombie over a sparkly little vampire any day.

Wait, what? I've never read a Twilight book. I'm being defamed! I have voted on lots of lists. It's something I do when I'm bored. It's true that Twilight dominates some of the lists, but that's all the more reason to vote on other stuff to bring it up. Just look at my votes, or look farther down the list, if the top of the list is filled with Meyerpires.

I would say that Breaking Dawn, the last of the Twilight series, probably was one of the most disturbing books I've ever read. However, this is mostly due to the fact that I am disturbed that it managed to get published and sell millions of copies. That book was atrocious.

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Just finished Jamrach's Menagerie and am not sure what's next - may be the surprising short one The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes and that should be done within a few hours reading easy :D Hope it's good!

I've heard really good things about the Julian Barnes and put it on my TBR not too long ago, so I'm definitely interested in what you think when you're done.

I'm probably not going to start reading it until tomorrow after work but it's only 150 pages long so I'll be reviewing it in no time & shall let you know :)

Janice (jamasc) I finished the audiobook Thunderhead and have started A Game of Thrones. That might be a bit of a challenge on audiobook format.

My husband is listening to Game of Thrones on audiobook right now. His major complaint is that the version he's using (audible) doesn't do a very good job of making chapter breaks clear, so things kind of run together.

IMHO, I was oddly introduced to the Twilight series. One of the kiddies I babysat had a grown uncle who was gaga over the series and finally talked me into reading it......he supplied me with the entire series all in one whack. (helluva lot more trusting than I am with my own books). He hounded me, until I finally started reading this horse shit and from start to finish he was the one who picked up the young'un. And then stood there asking 'what'd you think about'.......'wasn't it just awesome when'.......'I thought I'd die when'.....for fucking ever. To tell the truth, the series (which I ended up finishing, reading them all back to back) may not have been as bad without all the gushing questions the uncle was full of every day. Dammit man!!! I detested Belle. I wanted to flay her alive and leave her for the bad boys.

My complaint with it is that it's hard to keep track of all the characters. I'm only an hour into it and there have already been quite a few characters introduced. I think I might be better off reading the paperback.

There's a really good Wikipedia entry for A Game of Thrones - It lists the characters by house. I found it really useful for following the tv series. I had a similar issue follwing the characters in Battle Royale so I added notes to the character list in the front. I don't usually write in books, but 42 Japanese names (that sounded alarmingly similar to my uneducated ear) was just too much!

Here's the wiki - Game of Thrones Character List

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I really wanted to get into Game of Thrones but the series was being shown at the wrong time for me and I had too many books going on... I may have to look into it next year at this rate :(

Oh DO watch the series! It's the only series I've watched where I kept every episode and watched it 2 or 3 times before the next one came on. Just SUCH an amazing show.

The Targaryen scenes were always so strong. Plus the scenes with The Imp and Mord were hilarious. I just kept singing the theme song to Maude at the end of the scene, "And then there's Maude...And then there's Maude"

Karmen | 21 comments Currently reading "The Lost Ark of the Convenant" by Tudor Parfitt after seeing a PBS show having been made from it. Alternating with "Holy Smoke" by Tonino Benacquista. Have been alternating NF with mysteries. With the demise of Borders, bought a lot of mysteries and Europa Editions to read in the very near future.

Damn straight, Jim! The Pilo Family Circus restored my faith in horror novels. It's such an amazing, funny, original and genuinely creepy book. It was Will Elliott's 1st novel, and I'm a bit disappointed he went from that to a classic fantasy trilogy. Boo!

Send in the psychotic-magical-homicidally-perverted clowns....

That's a good one, but it takes a while for the brain to acclimate to the lingo. I don't think I understood what was going until about 20 pages in, and then I had to go back and re-read what I had missed.

Thanks for the warning. At least it's a short one. I'm reading a doorstop at the moment, The Passage. Great book, but I'll be glad to finish it.

You are quite correct about the lingo. I have finished reading more than 20 pages and still trying to adjust to the language.

So far so good, though."

I really enjoyed The Passage!

In this case, the "great books" are those in the Harvard Classics series, rather than the Encyclopedia Britannica collection. Apparently, there's a big difference between the two that I never realized.
