Abandonment is a central theme in the novel. The reader knoes that Liesel feels abandoned by her mother and by the death of her brother. How does she equate love with abandonment? At what point does she understand why she was abandon by her mother? Who else abandons Liesel in the novel? Debate whether she was abandoned by circumstance or by the heart.

What edition of the book do you have Kirsty? I have a paperback version with the cover having an image of someone's finger about to push a dominoe down to make the others go down. Thats the version that has the discussion guide for the book.
readinggroupguides.com has good discussion questions for lots of books. There are major spoilers in the questions so do not click on the following link and read the questions until you are finished reading the book.
