AuroraBlaze | 55 comments I think I read this about 5 years ago, but I'm pretty sure it's an older book. The copy I had was paperback and I think it was fairly long, maybe 300 or 400 pages.
The main character joins a survival course, and some people try to discourage him from joining it because it can be dangerous, but he does it anyways. In this world they have these portals that take them to other worlds instantly, so the final exam is them getting dropped off on a random planet for a random amount of time, and they just have to survive. But this time, something goes wrong and they never get picked up.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
They end up meeting the other people in the class (they're dropped off separately) and starting up a village. I think there was some disagreement about the leadership, but I don't remember much about the opponent. I remember that a small group of people went on a scouting mission and one of them injured his ankle. They found what looked like remnants of an ancient but tiny civilization. People argued about whether they should move there or stay where they were because there were these animals (I think that kinda looked like rabbits) that were harmless for most of the year but once a year they go crazy and attack everything. I think some people might have been killed by those creatures. They set up a system where people could get married, and the newlyweds were given their own hut. And then at the end, they were finally rescued, and everyone went back slowly until only the MC was left, he didn't want to leave. I forget how they finally convinced him to leave, but there were news people exploring their village and I think they might have been setting up tours.

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments The clincher was, that the kids had stayed on the planet long enough to be considered colonists, with free land/ownership (if they wanted to stay). So they offered to let them come home, and all the incentives (without telling them what they'd be giving up).
