Barbm1020 | 145 comments There was a real John Keel who was an author on paranormal topics back in the 70's. (I am not sure that was is real name, maybe a pen name.) He was he real life basis for the writer character in Mothman Prophesies.

Barbm1020 | 145 comments John Peel being of course the quintessential and pioneering London cop. Or so I have heard. Origin of the nickname "peelers"

You're good,Barb! :)

Barbm1020 | 145 comments :-) Thanks, it's just I've read a lot of English books here at the library.

You're welcome! Of course you'll find it here: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21... - the good twist (without revealing too much) is that the machine only goes in one direction, and in incremental time lapses. Not one of the greatest books on the subject, but for some light reading it's not bad.

PS: Sorry for the short hijacking of this thread; let's go back to the theme with another minor character that I find particularly memorable: anyone remember Hodgesaargh the falconer?

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

I think there are a few more aaaa's in his name! Great joke. :)

Technically, I believe they are called "a true Gentlemen's Gentleman" actually. :)

Thanks Marissa! ;)

Havva I'd just like to thank everyone who commented. I'm really enjoying the thread.

Barbm1020 | 145 comments Anoia dwells within us all. Or at least in the kitchen. ;-)

message 112: by [deleted user] (new)

Don't have to tell me that! lol I live it everyday. *sigh*

message 113: by Mai (new)

Mai (maisydaisy) That's another fun character - the priestess of Anoia. We never actually talk to her, but we get a neat impression of her character at the same time.

message 114: by [deleted user] (new)

Tiffany Aching actually sees and speaks with Anoia in Wintersmith.

I really like the priests in the temple of Offler the crocodile god. They are visited by Death in Reaper Man and Moist in Going Postal.

message 115: by [deleted user] (new)

@jeannette - speaking of which, what about Offler him(it?)self, with his slight speech impediment? In some ways, a precursor of the Igors...

Serge K. wrote: "@jeannette - speaking of which, what about Offler him(it?)self, with his slight speech impediment? In some ways, a precursor of the Igors..."

Which book does Offler appear in, Serge? The Igors, a great family.

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

If I recall correctly, Offler makes quite an appereance in Pyramids (which is quite natural, considering his origins). He certainly is mentioned en passant in Mort.

As for his lisp, it has of course quite a different cause than the Igors' one. And you're right: they're a very close family, sharing quite a lot in common ;)

message 118: by [deleted user] (new)

Mort and Pyramids will have to be bumped up on my "to read again" list. It's fun to revisit a Pratchett book that I have pretty much forgotten.

Igors were never ones to be wasteful! :)

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

So my favorite minor guys are, Topsy Turvey, I loved her, what a great person and her crossbows.

And then there is always the girl I forget her name but is in Reaperman and is always talking to death.

And then of acrouse all the trolls in Moving Pictures, love them.

message 120: by Rinofthemill (new)

Rinofthemill oh yeah horace! he borke the cheese roll tradition. and i like it when he feegles went to get some turpentine and gavethe little girl a spoon... that was funny

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

Gotta love Horace, in his little bit of tartan! :)

message 122: by Barbm1020 (new)

Barbm1020 | 145 comments The Scouring Fair, where Horace appears in I Shall Wear Midnight, is based on a real tradition as I found out last year in researching the White Horses of the Downs. (O course I know that the Discworld is Not Earth ;-) and the Chalk is not The Downs, etc.) But the Horses really did get tidied up each year for a long time by teams of volunteers. And knowing the English, ale and cheese were probably in order. Dunno about witches, though...

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

Earth and Discworld are eerily similar. ;) Is the Downs where they found the Great White Horse?

message 124: by Barbm1020 (new)

Barbm1020 | 145 comments The very same.

The Five Horsemen are in Thief of Time. The Horseman of the Common Cold sounds more "wizardly". Have you looked on L-space?

message 130: by [deleted user] (new)

lol! Great word association, too, Barbm!
