You make a valid point, and when I was chatting my my grandmother about some of the books that I choose to read, and why I love them she said something about the "theory of moral relativity" - if I remember correctly it is an idea that a persons morals are relative to what their beliefs are and that in reading some people take to heart the wrong morals, but that those are a reflection of their families morays and upbringing... I hope I did not make a muck of that... I am out of touch with the sociological realm!

Hi Erin, that actually makes very good sense! I totally get what you're saying. I can see the theory applying heavily to religion, politics, terrorism. Very interesting. :)

I am ashamed to admit I haven't read Diana Gabaldon's books yet. But they are definitely on my to-read list. I keep hearing how great they are.

message 162: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments of the 3 brothers that this series centers on (then, later it expands to the children of 1 of the brothers) my personal fav was Magnus in The Very Virile Viking. He keeps getting more and more and more kids. Any female that doesn't want to have to raise HER kids just brings the kid(s) by and tells him that HE'S the father and leaves them. He doesn't really care if he did or didn't father them, he loves them all anyway. I think at the start of this book he has a total of 13. There's just something about a great big, virile hunk of male that has never met a child he didn't love and want to take care of, ya know?

message 163: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C Ann you definitely peaked my interest. I have to agree with your comment

I love the series but I know they tend to be love/hate books - you either really like them or can't stand them :) I hope you enjoy them! I have actually gotten to meet the author 3 times now. (aren't I a stalker...) Once in Anchorage and twice here in Washington, all at book signings of course. She is definitely my favorite author.

(gasping in horror) you mean that there is supposed to actually be an END to your TBR? I thought that if it was shorter than you were, you weren't doing enough scouting out of new books. :o)

*LOL* Well I am in good shape then, the 'list' would be taller than most buildings, even if printed in standard size font! And we won't discuss how many actual books I have waiting to be read..I'd end up on that Hoarders show :)

message 175: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) On average, what genre do you read most? Mysteries of all kinds, including some cozies, police procedurals, mysteries with psychics or ghosts, FBI teams, etc.

My favorite genre is mystery, hands down with the exception of length explicit torture scenes, which I can skip over if the rest of the story is really good. I also like thrillers with serial killers. I also like some fantasy books.

My least favorite genres are straight romance (like Harlequins), horror, westerns and most vampire stuff.

My genre of guilty pleasure are romance suspense and Star Trek novels, the one that happen after the TV shows left off.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Elyssa--I think that there are 9 or so books in this series now. We've done the 3 brothers for the original books. Then we added in travels for Magnus' children (The Very Virile Viking this is Magnus' story) and now we are having friends of the kids. After the first 3, Hill sends one of the sons to join the SEALS. And so we then add SEALS to the Vikings. lol, I'm a Navy brat--gotta LOVE those SEALS. :o)
