Ouch! Feel better ... hope the pain goes away. Why can't these bookshelves move themselves?

The husband of a friend of mine had 5 herniated discs. Last week they inserted balloons in three disc and this week they did the other two. Instant relief he was up and about the next day. Of course he can't lift or do heavy exercise at the moment. What an improvement over the rods they use to put in the back. If you find the problem continues you might want to investigate further. I thought of you when she told me.

That's interesting, Carol. I've had one ruptured disk. 'Twas pretty awful, but I recovered in 6 months. Last spring's session with sciatica put me in fear again, tho.

Apparently they make a very small incision and slip the tiny balloons between the disc, they then act like the cartilage that has blown out. I was amazed he was up and around with very little pain. I am going to see him tomorrow so I will ask what the procedure is.
Don't think mine has ruptured and am hoping to avoid surgery at all costs. Can now sit for short periods (10 mins) so on the improve :-)
Hang in there. Took me 6 months, but I have had no problem with it in the 6 years since, except for an attack of sciatica which physical therapy cleared up in 6 weeks.
Starting physio next week...yay....and one of the good things about living in a very small community....I have been friends with the physio since we were 4! Hopefully only 2 or 3 weeks til worktime!
One other spin-off of all this idleness....have now got a wireless modem, which means I can use school laptop at home (instead of clunky 10 yr old PC) and can now skype and stuff....new toys!! :-)

Oh, great. So happy I don't have Skype. Last thing I need is to be George Jetsoned to New Zealand and such, esp. with my ugly mugg and doesn't-translate-electronically voice....
Did my first skype video call with a cousin in the UK yesterday......seemed perfectly natural....audio great; video had split-second delay but not annoying at all.
Merry Christmas everyone. It is 5.45pm on the day here....had a lovely brekkie at my daughter's with her in-laws, and am expecting her and Nane for a barbie anytime now (Carl is here too). It is sunny and 31 degrees C...hothothot! Meat is marinating, horses doovers are made, as is trifle. Mall is bringing potato salad and pav.....kiwi chrissie all organised. Hope yours, wherever you are, is just as relaxed and happy xo.
Whew, that day is gone. Glad you were feeling up to Christmas. Sounds like you had a very relaxing day. I am having a hard time getting my head around the 80+ temps though. Do you plan anything special for the new year?
Glad you're day was a festive one, Debs. Life interrupts more and more and we see you less and less, alas!
Trying to be more with it....the amount of reading I have put away in my absence has been phenomenal! Just finished The Hippopotamus by Stephen Fry......mixed emotions about it despite the excellent writing. I hope your day was lovely and my resolution is to be more in evidence :-)
Well heck, if you're getting more reading done, absence isn't such a bad thing. We don't even want to THINK about the "readers" who burn time on Goodreads talking about reading while they don't read. Do we...?
Ten days til I stand in front of a fresh group of 9 year olds! I am the most rested I have been for 17 years....the timing was perfect....back to school after 7 weeks recovering from disc issue, 2 weeks in class doing Christmassy stuff....then 6 weeks holidays! This new bunch of kids won't know what hit 'em....I am going to inspire the socks off 'em!
Ôoooooo, sounds good. How lucky the kiddies are. Do you feel like you did when you got your first classroom?
Carl came and renailed my roof for me.....and Kinane dealt with the fence graffiti......they do OK considering one lives in Wellington, and the other is married with a very busy life!
Wotcha doin' in October Gabi? I'll be in Sydney for 3 days...........

See above! It is likely to be early in Oct but will let you know once I have booked the flights. It'll be great to meet up somewhere!
Newengland wrote: "What's Europe got that Los Estados Unitos hasn't got?"Universal healthcare, better than 98% literacy (13% of Americans are "proficient," 22% functionally illiterate), sane social policies, less than 10% of our military spending per capita, no Tea Party, electoral systems that aren't rigged by Republican gerrymandering, less than 1% of our deaths by gun violence, functioning food safety laws, and immeasurably greater overall civility. Other than that, nah, we're just the same.
Unfortunately, Europeans also have rampant anti-immigrant and homophobic attitudes. Poland, Hungary and Russia have strong currents of antisemitism against both Jews and Muslims. Hungarians often hold stereotypical attitudes toward Gypsies. Russia recently outlawed gay pride parades and/or rallies. Even the Nederlands has seen a resurgence of prejudice against their many Moroccan, Indonesian and Surinamese immigrants. I totally agree with Newengland's perspective of Europe's more enlightened attitude to universal healthcare, more humane welfare policies and emphasis on avoiding military conflicts rather than welcoming them with a show of force. But, Europe is not a continent that universally upholds gender and ethnic equality: in my opinion, the US has a better record in that purview.
Well.....just as well I am not going there then....just to the homes of Imperialism and Fascism......
Does anyone have a passion for tea? Every since my doctor told me to avoid drinking coffee because it raised by blood pressure, I have been drinking tea. My blood pressure figures have dropped and I have been experimenting with different teas. A list of my favorites are: [Green Teas]Longjing (Dragon Well); [Oolong Teas] Tieguanyin (Iron Goddess of Mercy); [Black Teas] Darjeeling, Assam, and Keemun. Has anyone tried Lapsang Souchong? I hear that it has a strong smoky flavor. A book that I find very informative on this subject is: The Story of Tea: A Cultural History and Drinking Guide
It's Earl Grey that tastes like old saddles to me. But since I had to give up caffeine, I drink only herb tea now. Particularly partial to Tazo Wild Sweet Orange.
One of my favorite herb teas is Rooibos Red Leaf tea from South Africa. Very refreshing & no caffeine. I have a particular passion for Moroccan Mint with Gunpowder green tea as a base.
Sooooo.....went to mum's for morning tea today....a bit of an occasion because my 3 neices and nephew from Christchurch were home for the holidays and mum wanted all her grandchildren to visit before they headed back. My sister and her partner turned up with a marriage celebrant in tow! We had a very small, intimate, surprise wedding!!!! The Christchurch lot are her kids and they were in on it but the rest of us were.....surprised!
Tea time girls. So the district gave everyone a new iPad. That sounds like fun. I like the android I have. I use it the most. Not to many days le ft before you chickadees get together. Wish I could be there to join you. Going to beddy by now. Night all.
So I wrote this huge response and all that was posted was the first 2 words.....basically....watch out for Trev, back very good, and iPads great...just our school (PTA) and teachers playing with educational apps to be proficient in use so we can apply them in class when pods of them are bought for student use.
I'm baaaaaack! My life was somewhat abruptly and rudely put on hold by an obstructed small bowel that required emergency surgery (9 pm on a Sunday night). I am now at home after 8 days in hospital and working hard at regaining strength.....ie doing not much at all! The silver lining is, of course, that it didn't happen while I was overseas ( or just before I was due to go)! And I laugh derisively in the faces of all those people who say that my bikini wearing days are over......I will wear a bikini exactly as often as I did before:-P
