Celeste | 8 comments Well this is one of my favorite books. Silent Scream

Erin | 36 comments Thank you, I appreciate any suggestions!

message 3: by Elena (new)

Elena (elenalikesbooks) | 95 comments The Martian is an excellent stand-alone that's fast-paced, suspenseful, and funny.

message 4: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments The Martian is on my to-read. Thanks!

message 5: by Jordan (new)

Jordan | 14 comments I know people who loved Reconstructing Amelia and Where They Found Her and always lump them in with Gone Girl when making recommendations

message 6: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3 comments The Weight of Blood is along the same lines as Gone Girl. There are portions that are disturbing, but if you liked (and tolerated) Gone Girl, it would be a good book for you.

Sarah Williamson (bookstackreviews) | 34 comments If you liked the shining girls, The same author has a new book out called Broken Monsters and I read that in one sitting. I thought it was just as good if not better than the shining girls.

Sarah Williamson (bookstackreviews) | 34 comments Some of my other un-put-down-able favorites are

before I go to slee by SJ Watson

Me Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
(not suspense, but hilarious and the characters were fabulous)

The Raven Boys series by Maggie Stiefvater is AMAZING it is not a never ending series. The last book comes out this January.

hope some of these help. Two of these are YA, but shallow shitty YA.

message 9: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments Thanks so much for all the suggestions!
Broken Monsters was already on my to-read. I'll have to check it out soon, thanks.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Williamson (bookstackreviews) | 34 comments No problem! Broken Monsters seems overly gratuitous at first, but it all ties together in the end.

Donald Kirch (storywriter1967) | 1 comments I would like to humbly suggest my new horror novel "Through A Glass Darkly." I have added a link to a recent "Book Review." Let me know what you think.

I promise...no "gross out" just plain "scary." ;-)

Andi Brown | 8 comments I too humbly (or not so) suggest my own Animal Cracker. Great reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Cracker-...

reading is my hustle (readingismyhustle) | 66 comments If you liked Hunger Games you might give The Knife of Never Letting Go a try (it is the first in a trilogy). There is also a fair amount of buzz about Luckiest Girl Alive.

message 14: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments YES, I love the Chaos Walking series! I haven't read book 3 yet, though. I made my husband read the first one, and he breezed through all 3. :) thanks! I'm reading something now but plan to pick Monsters of Men up soon.

message 15: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments ...Luckiest Girl sounds good, too! I've added it to my list. Thanks again

Jess ❈Harbinger of Blood-Soaked Rainbows❈ | 20 comments Erin, I just read You, and it is by far the best book I have read this year. There is a sequel coming out in September, but IMO the book can read as a standalone. It is EXACTLY what I WANTED Gone Girl to be. It is a really twisted/dark thriller about a man who meets a girl in the city and becomes obsessed with her.

Another one that stands out is Marisha Pessl's Night Film which gave me a book hangover (where nothing else seemed remotely interesting in comparison) for months afterwards.

message 17: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments I already read Night Film and liked it. I'll check the other one out, though. Sounds interesting! Thank you!

message 18: by Jan (new)

Jan Miller | 1 comments Erin, I'd like to recommend "I Know How You Feel: The Sensate" to you because it has this really cool Sci Fi concept I just love, the main character can feel through other people's nervous systems and take on their physical skills, but it had erotic scenes in it, and I don't know if that would be okay for you.

message 19: by Ashok (new)

Ashok Thadani (ashokthadani) | 40 comments Hi Erin...still looking for a suggestion?
I too love a fast read (unputdownable) and especially if it's dystopian.
I loved the The Hunger Games Trilogy Boxset trilogy and that led me to the Divergent Series Complete Box Set series, and then Slated, Fractured and Shattered, completing the trilogy.
These series I consider unputdownable....but they are not stand alone as you mentioned. So what I would definitely recommend are The Lost Girl, If You Find Me and a rather short book: Running Out of Time
Tell me if you read any of these!!!

message 20: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments Yes, always open to suggestions! I've read the HG trilogy and loved it. A couple of these were already on my to-read, and I just added Running Out of Time. Thank you!

message 21: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments Thanks, Jan! I have no problem with erotic scenes.

message 22: by Susan (new)

Susan May (susanmaywriter) | 2 comments I saw someone recommended You. I have to concur and agree with Stephen King who loved it. It's the most individually different book I've read in ages. Couldn't put it down. I also loved The Martian and the film is out very soon. And Michael Robotham's Say You're Sorry is beyond addictive. Read the first page and you won't be able to stop.

message 23: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments Thanks for the suggestions, Susan!

message 24: by Sara (new)

Sara (vivianstreet) | 19 comments Have you heard of Code Name Verity? It's fantastic; it sucked me in and I wasn't able to put it down.

message 25: by Molleca (new)

Molleca Smith | 8 comments I recommend you Room 702 It's a beautiful and funny story with engaging characters similar to Notting Hill. I couldn't put it down and I finished it in just a few hours. Not cheesy, typical or predictable at all. It was a great surprise

message 26: by Mir (new)

Mir | 191 comments I think the two I read fastest this last year were A Head Full of Ghosts and Vicious. Looking at your list the former might be more your taste.

message 27: by Jess (new)

Jess Mo (superjes) | 1 comments I second the Martian and the Girl on the Train. I also just read Oryx and Crake and could not put it down.

message 28: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments Thanks for all of the recommendations!

I loved the girl on the train...even more than Gone Girl.

I don't mind a good quality series at all! I just think a great stand-alone is refreshing. I love Stephen King.

message 29: by Megha (new)

Megha (meg04) | 2 comments Millenium series by Stieg Larsson. The books are thick but the story runs fast and it's a thrilling experience.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1)
The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2)
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Millennium, #3)

message 30: by Shawn (new)

Shawn (shawn-s) | 2 comments Wait, you HAVE to finish every book you start? Did I read that, do you finish every tv program you surf through, or every movie you start.

IMO The world is full of great books. It is also filled with horrible books, and subpar books. If you force yourself to read every word of every book you try, you will be greatly cheating yourself.

message 31: by Erin (new)

Erin | 36 comments There are some books I haven't finished. Some bother me still. If a book is horrible, that's different. But if it's an ok book, I hate not finishing. I've read books that were 'meh' until halfway through and turned out great. I've read books that I loved...until the ending. A bad ending completely ruins a book for me. You just never know. So, I like to read through. As long as the book is well written, I prefer to finish.

Yes, actually I do finish any movie I watch. Not that I'm ocd about not finishing a movie. I just know what I like, and I don't mind finishing a movie that was 'just ok'. I get your point, though. No offense taken.

I struggle with ADD, so usually it's a, "It's not you, it's me." kinda scenario.

Thanks

I agree, Shawn. Even if it is everyone else's idea of a great book, if I don't like it, I move on.
