I Hate that Tea is Caffeine's Red-Headed Stepchild
About 10 minutes ago, I found a solution to my problem with my story. I was going to write a suicide note and have the character's dad be reading it for the police officer, but I had no idea how to begin the note, let alone write the whole thing. I was up until today considering leaving the note out entirely. Then I suddenly realized that the prologue could be used as a suicide note!Has this amazing kind of success happened to any of you?

All the time. I'll be really stuck, and won't know how to write anything at all, until suddenly BAM! that moment of realization, and I've got a solution. It usually happens when I am lying awake at night; I take awhile to fall asleep and have plenty of time to think then.
tea pet peeves:stainless steel tea pots (all the heat dissipates before the tea is done steeping)
serving tea in a cup without a ceramic pot to steep the tea in... and then asking if you want a water refill (all it does is dilute the tea without being able to steep more)
tea in paper cups (disgusting)
people who make hot water for tea by passing it through a coffee machine (easiest way to ruin tea)
microwave tea
not being asked if I want cream and sugar with my tea

You can't get a proper cup of tea in an American restaurant. I waitressed one summer at a Denny's, and, being a tea lover, tried to serve boiling hot water with the tea bags, but it was impossible. It just wasn't equipped for tea. There wasn't a tea kettle on the premises and it took too long to heat water in a microwave. Unless you are at a British teahouse, or in Canada, you are out of luck.

I was waiting for you to chime in on this one, Amanda.Melissa, I'm glad to see somebody admit she writes in cafes still. There's been such a backlash against that. I don't know if you read The Oxford American, but it had a George Singleton article a while back about how "real" writers don't write in public because ... well, I can't remember why. I guess because he doesn't. But I've always enjoyed working in a good cafe.
My favorite tea of all time is Keemun which is a black tea from China. It's strong and round and of course it tastes like black tea, but is sooooo different, you just can't compare it to the Indian or Ceylon (sri lanka) teas. I love love love it!And to add to our community list of pet peeves--asking for milk, but receiving half and half. EW! Half and half is for coffee. Oh, and another thing, green tea DOES have caffeine. I almost throttled some know-it-all behind the counter of some joke of a tea house one day because he had some huge sign up advertising his fancy-ass green tea smoothie: Healthy, Green Tea has NO Caffeine!!! I've even had people tell me that their doctors are telling them to cut caffeine out of their diets by switching to green tea.

And to stay on topic, tea rules. I love it. Wish I could find a good way to mix tea and booze--then my life really would be complete. At least until I pass out, anyway...
Oooh, I just thought of another thing I hate. Afternoon tea is the thing with little sandwiches. High tea is an actual meal. Please don't feed me a cookie and call it High Tea. I'll argue with you and cause a scene at your special little party.

I'm with Amanda - half and half is for coffee, not tea. Be strong Amylynn. Ask for the milk and don't be embarassed.When I worked at Denny's, the stuff in the little creamer pots on the tables wasn't half and half, it was imitation creamer. One of my tasks as a waitress on the graveyard shift was to mix new creamer, it was a just-add-water powder that came in a giant plastic bag.
And it STILL went bad after a few hours with no refrigeration. My advice - never use that stuff. Not with tea, not with coffee, just never.
In Scotland, "tea" is the evening meal, even if you don't drink tea during it, but have it later with candy bars which they call biscuits. At least, that's what my relatives did.
Same here. I've tried green tea, it doesn't taste like tea to me. It tastes like salty seaweed. Not a good flavor, in my opinion. I don't care if it's good for me, I'm not gonna drink it.I hate the word "should".
I did that a few nights ago. It was about 10:30 at night and I was trying to get to sleep and all of the sudden I knew. I went right to my journal and filled in the missing peices to my story. Now I have a full idea.
I was reading this morning that the antioxidants in green tea "come to life" if you mix the tea with a splash of juice--something about the acidity making the catechins more absorbable in our bodies. I might try it. I don't like green tea either, but we make a Strawberry green which is delightful iced (if I do say so). Could work well with a splash of oj or cran. I'll check out the Tea Lounge online. I'd love to steal their ideas. haha.

I like hot green tea, but unsweetened and not iced. I also love green tea mochi (Japanese ice cream in a rice wrapper).

Whatever they serve in Japanese restaurants? I don't know. I don't drink it at home. I'm too busy drinking my full pot of coffee + 3 shots of espresso at home....And now I'm craving Japanese food.
yeah, i get most of my best ideas during the night because when i'm trying to fall asleep i can only think about my writing!!! except one time, i was totally stuck on this one story and couldn't think of anything. i was so desperate that i tried--okay, this sounds kind of weird, but--MEDITATING. So i sat on my bed and closed my eyes and just stayed like that for ten minutes, and then suddenly i opened my eyes and gasped because i knew exactly what i wanted to write! it was sooooo weird...

Meditating isn't weird. It is very relaxing, just sitting there with your eyes closed, not conciously thinking, but still thinking.
Same here. I'll lie awake just thinking about my writing. Just the other night, I couldn't get to sleep, and I was thinking about one of the books I am working on (it's on this site- Stairway to the Stars.) Suddenly I started playing Chapter 5 out in my head, and at 2:00 in the morning, I couldn't stand it anymore. I got up and rushed to my laptop and wrote the whole of Chapter 5. At 4:00 I was done. I'm pretty proud of what I accomplished at 2:00 in the morning.
I think that most of the stories I have written have come to me in the middle of the night. How weird is that? It's like I'm more awake when I'm asleep.
lol. same here. all i can think about at night is my writing. i keep writing and rewriting certain scenes inside my head. sella, i don't know how you do it...i wish i had the energy to write down my thoughts in the middle of the night, but i'm always too tired. and then i'm lying awake worrying that i'm going to forget the really good ideas that i have piling up in my head. but i usually don't forget...at least, i don't think i do! lol.
Well, I was dead tired the next day, and woke up @ 1:00 (luckily it was a weekend.) But even though I was really tired, I guess I felt like I had to... the scene was writing itself in my head, and I thought if I didn't write it down I would lose it. That happens to me sometimes..I need to write it right away! Little did I know it would take me 2 hours! Night is when I get all my ideas, or most, and when my writing side of my brain is most active. I guess it's because I take so long to fall asleep, and because I'm relaxed- I have time to just think.
I know exactly what you mean. I have to get into my zen mode to get good writing. I usually achieve that when I'm going to sleep because it's quiet and my bed is comfortable, so all I have to do is sleep, or think. And thinking usually wins. I don't know how I could get up in the morning, though, if I wrote at 1:00am like Sella, that takes some real talent. :)
Thanks, Kenzie! Well, the next day was a weekend, so I could sleep in for as long as I wanted. If it had a been a school night- don't ask me about that.
I always think about my writing at night! Though, I hate it when I fall asleep and have to find where I left off ^-^
This is so weird! I take a lot of time to fall asleep too, and thats where a lot of my stories form. I also have amazing breakthroughs when I least expect them. I have no idea how to make pieces fit, but eventually, out of the blue, they just hit me. Its a way cool feeling.
i think all creative people get their best ideas at night, and not just writers, either. i have this friend who makes movies, and one time i was telling him about how i write stories in my head when i'm in bed, and he said that he does the same thing but he's like filming in his head as he's falling asleep!!!
That's so weird! But you know what they say, 'great minds think alike.' In the sense that we have the same thinking habits, this time.

he paints. he's really good too, but also really modest and he refuses to admit how amazing his art is... it bugs me so much! i'm always like, "dad, your work is so awesome!" and he's like, "nah..."
Again with self-confidence issues. It must be more than just an author problem...
definitely... although i personally don't have so many issues with confidence. i mean, i like most of my own writing. sure, there are some old pieces that i cringe at when i read them over, but right now i think i'm doing pretty well. the only part i don't feel so sure about it actually getting published, because publishers just have so many rules, and they won't even give my writing a chance because i'm so young and inexperienced... it makes me so mad!

thanks ... haha. well, actually i agree. i have read books where i've been like, 'gosh, even I'VE written something better than this ... ' and that helps to boost my confidence a little. lol. XD
