Su 2015 10-20 Questions & Answers

It may comfort you (albeit slightly) to know this is not the first time Sharp Objects has thrown a wrench in someone's reading plan. :/

Brooklyn Publi Library has a birth year of 1952 for Judith Claire Mitchell.
I'm afraid Dear Reader was first pub. in 2014, not 2012. Please add anothe..."
Thanks so much for finding Judith Claire Mitchell's DOB. I didn't realise that BPL could be a force for good - I thought it was just for announcing those annoying YA Assignments ;-)
My copy of Dear Reader says "Originally published in French as La Liseuse in 2012", with "This translation first published by Pushkin Press 2014". This would seem to be backed up by the author's website and this review, among others. So I went with 2012, as that seemed consistent with the approach used in message 12 of this thread.
I'm happy to change the plan if required, but could you just check? Thanks.

I am sorry you were caught be surprise by the YA designation. It does trip people up, even myself, on occasion. Please see the FAQ thread for a better, fuller explanation of how we determine what books are YA than i can give this morning (pre-coffee).

Thank you for this information! goodreads doesn't have the original French version and neither does Worldcat. And for some stupid reason the "Amamzon look inside" feature won't show me the copyright page. So I thought it was an original book commissioned, translated & published by Pushkin Press in 2014.
I'll change goodreads to match the original pub. date of 2012.

Fantastic. Thanks, Liz.

Thanks, I've made the changes hopefully this final list is correct.

Katrina,
You're not going to believe this, but Charlotte Gray was originally published in 1998, not 1999. :`(
So, after combining the various posts, I've compiled the following plan for you (and re-checked all the dates just to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything). Pick any any 10 years -- the publication years do not need to be consecutive.
Birth dates: 1947 - 1966
pub 1997 - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Jean-Dominique Bauby (born 1952)
pub 1998 - Cave in the Snow..., Vicki Mackenzie (born 1947)
-- OR -- Charlotte Gray, Sebastian Faulks (born 1953)
pub 2000 - When We Were Orphans, Kazuo Ishiguro (born 1954)
pub 2001 - Bitter Fruit, Achmat Dangor (born 1948)
pub 2002 - Dead Air, Iain Banks (born 1954)
pub 2003 - The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger (born 1963)
pub 2004 - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke (born
pub 2005 - Two Lives, Vikram Seth (born 1952)
pub 2006 - The Testament of Gideon Mack, James Robertson (born 1958)
-- OR -- The Witch Of Portobello, Paulo Coelho (born 1947)
pub 2007 - The Welsh Girl, Peter Ho Davies (born 1966)
pub 2008 - A Case of Exploding Mangoes, Mohammed Hanif (born
pub 2009 - Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann (born 1965)
pub 2013 - The Orenda, Joseph Boyden (born 1966)

Thanks a lot for your patience and time, sorry it's been such a pain in the arse, I clearly need to review my internet searches! x

No problem! I was worried you were going to throw your hands up in frustration and walk away from the whole thing. I am glad we've finally got a winner! :D

Thanks

Brian Slattery's LOC file does say 1975:

I thank you too - it's another resource for me trying to get the database as complete as possible.

This book is not designated as YA or Assignment or Juv at the BPL, so it won't trigger a check of lexile. It is fine to use.

Time Travelers need to have their plans approved (reading in publication order)
Time Leapers do not (reading in any order)

It looks like you are planning on leaping, which means you can post as you read, no need to worry about your plan. :)

A few minor corrections, for your record:
Native Speaker was first published in 1995 (not 1996)
Among Others was first published in 2011 (not 2012)

Jayme,
You don't need approval for your plan but thanks for posting what you have so we could check for possible difficulties. At the moment, you have a 22-year span for your authors -- it should be 1950-1969 or 1952-1971.
Please be aware that Sharp Objects DOES NOT qualify for the 15-point tasks. It is shelved as YA at the Brooklyn Public Library and does not have a lexile score.
Also, After You will not be published until Sept. 2015, do you have an advanced readers copy or did you mean to include Me Before You in your plan?
Finally, James Patterson was born in 1947, not 1955

When you have a moment, can you separate your two possibilities into two posts? It will be easier for Kate to double-check your plan while score-keeping if there is only one plan per post.

Unfortunately you need to make some changes to your second plan.
V. was first published in 1961, not 1963 (although oddly he has a copyright for both dates).
Hiroshima Notes was first published in 1965, not 1996.
Please let me know when you've revised your plan!

okay we can put in Me Before You and I will take out the James Patterson.

Is it ok to read the books on our approved plan out of order, provided we only post for points in the right order? This would still require us to have read all the previous books on the plan before we can get any credit for the later ones. Or will you be validating against the "read dates" on our GR profile?
I'm asking because I have books later in my plan that are due back at the library so I would like to read them sooner, rather than have to return and re-borrow, or keep renewing.

No. Reading books out of order means you are a time-leaper, not a time time traveler.
And no, we won't be "validating" this against your profile read dates -- you are on your honor for this.

Jayme, wikipedia says June 5,1970
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gayle...
However, Library of Congress file says 1971. Hmm...

If I Stay which you originally mentioned has a Lexile of 830, in case you find another task it might fit.

Sure thing. Sorry I just now got to looking at this thread. But I think I'm going with the first list. the ones with the older authors.

I looked at your first list, since you indicated you would read that one. Joyce Carol Oates was born 1938, although that doesn't change your plan. The real problem is The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection was originally published in 2012, which gives you 2 books with that year.
I didn't check your 2nd list.

Sorry, I was looking at my paperback copy. How about I substitute The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon by the same author.
Would I be able to use The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection for the Diverse Genres task? I'm not sure since it is written in the third person

Please make new posts for your plans."
Done

Sort of. City of Falling Angels has an original pub date of 2005, so you need to move it to that open spot on your plan. Otherwise, you're A-OK.

I will update the approved list this weekend, as I am away from my computer and can't edit posts on my phone.

You're substituting Secret River for Sense of Ending?
If so, that is fine."
Hi Liz, my substitution is the other way round, ie The Sense of an Ending, instead of The Secret River. Is that ok too?

wow! I was way-off on that one! Wonder where I got that other year? Good thing I had 2005 open! Do I need to make a new post to adjust it?

No worries, Liz! Just as long as I know I can start and then I had so many mistakes! At least I've gotten (a little) better at adding my scores. (smile)

The only thing i can think is it is taught in som ed schools but then so is Chaucer and Dickens, it doesnt make them YA.
Sharp Objects is a thriller, if it's anything like Gone Girl you wouldn't want a teenager reading it, it also clearly says on the goodreads page that it's listed as adult fictionhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... only 17 people listed it as YA out of the thousands and thousands who read it (305 listed it as adult), and I'm not quite sure what they were thinking.

I thought we were just supposed to look at the highest listings, otherwise many classics would also be deemed out of the picture. Hope you have a chance to relook at these.
