ABANDONED. Children's book about a tiger in a zoo, each animal tells a story

I'm trying to find a book I had as a child. It was a book of stories, told by animals in the zoo in the evenings, after the people go home. Every evening a different animal tells a story. The main character throughout is a little tiger who is in the zoo with his mother. There is also an elephant and some more unusual animals, including a sloth.

I think there is also a villain, perhaps a crocodile, called "Spats". In one of the stories, the little elephant is covered in snow so that the villain can win a snow sculpture competition with his "snow elephant".

I can't remember much more but I had this book around 1983 when I was 4. I would love to find a copy to read to my own 4 year old. Thanks very much!

Oh and I think the tiger's own story in the book might have been about how the tiger got his stripes. In fact I think all the stories were a bit like this, explaining some feature of the animals, a bit like the Just So stories...
