Kaylee Isom C.S. Lewis attempts to address some of life’s worst and most confusing issues that everyone faces in their life at one point. He writes as a believer to believers and can easily relate to them with problems that even he suffers with and he offers solutions. Lewis presents one of his greatest collections of sermons from the 1940s in this book and persuades and teaches on these controversial topics. For instance, in his sermon “The Weight of Glory” Lewis talks about how Christians are too easily pleased. They are like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in the slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a vacation by the sea. This is only one of many of his inspiring analogies.
The persuasive techniques that he uses are absolutely brilliant and help the reader understand the concepts even better. Once of the best techniques he uses is going over a concept and then talking about what it means. For example, he will introduce an analogy or metaphor and then explain the concept later. This is very helpful because it allows the reader to understand the idea first and then are told what it means and how they can apply to their life. I particularly enjoyed this book because he has a beautiful sermon on forgiveness and this is one of the things that Christians struggle with the most I think. He relates it to himself by saying that even he struggles with forgiving the everyday incessant offences from others and he adds that he knows this is hard to do. Lewis gets very personal with his readers and that is a great persuasive technique.
This book is wonderful in its subject matter and wisdom. C.S. Lewis outdoes himself and I would highly recommend this book to anyone. Everyone who reads it will definitely benefit from it in some way.
