I personally like Whedon's work even if I don't like him as an individual or agree with him about, well, anything.
I agree with his approach to art. In Serenity commentary, he was talking about the need for balance between having a flawed hero who often fails and having no hero whatsoever. Too much "modern" literature/film is nihilistic to the point where the concept of having a heroic character is considered old fashioned. Whedon, as leftist as he is, does not fall into that trap.
Politics, though? Irredeemably Progressive. I stopped reading Whedonesque at some point because I couldn't stand it anymore.

He is a self-identified socialist. Limousine Liberal doesn't even begin to cut it.

Wrong anime. It's Outlaw Star, not Cowboy Bebop. Everybody seems to make this mistake. /geek

And how and why are they better than Firefly? I always considered it a libertarian show, where the crew was going up against a rapacious government.
Well, apparently the libertarian vibe was snuck in by Tim Minear while Joss wasn't paying attention, but whatever works :)
Anyhoo, I never cared much about originality. Whether Joss was inspired by these shows or just somehow had that stuff in his head without even realizing it (remember, he IS a super-geek, in addition to whatever else he is)- doesn't matter. I loved the show. Actually maybe it's for the best it was only 1 season plus a movie because both Buffy and Angel overstayed their welcome and Dollhouse was the fastest decline of a show I have ever seen. (All IMHO since arguing about tastes is pretty futile).
