Its a quirky read; not as much comedy as some of his others; nor as much tragedy as some of his others either. I think one comes away from it without having much emotion drawn either way. The characters are well-delineated, but what Waugh is actually commenting on --other than the stodgy life of some phlegmatic English specimens--I'm sure I don't know.
