I recently finished a book of short stories by Edith Wharton, and she retains that same poise while covering a good variety of situations. Always a social commentary embedded in each tale.

It is a rare author whose skill translates to both novels and short stories, and Edith Wharton is definitely one of them.

madrano | 23685 comments Mkfs, i agree with your comments on Wharton. I really find her writing skills remarkable. The last i read was A Backward Glance, a lesser known work. I liked this line, "Mrs. Manford's motto had always been: 'There's a time for everything.' But there were moments when this optimistic view failed her, and she began to think there wasn't."
