Teresa (ladysilk) | 1 comments Thank you Rick for the invitation. I have been a avid reader all my life and enjoy a large number of genres: International Thrillers such as those by Clive Cussler, James Rollins and Matthew Reilly, Action/Adventure in general, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Regency romance and almost all pre-WWI historical novels. I am the author of several unpublished children's tales, and several published tales for professional story tellers and the Regency Romance novel A Very Merry Chase which I wrote 35 years ago, and in the process of making the final edits/revisions on a Paranormal Action/Adventure Time/Travel Romance which I actually wrote 90% of approximately 25 years ago.
Smiles,
Teresa

I'm a fellow author/reader that enjoys reading a variety of fiction, especially conspiracy theories, historical fiction, or anything that has a technological overtone. My book, Grey Skies Ahead, was published back in August and I'm currently working on my next title, a Sci-Fi thriller set in the 22nd century, currently called Humanoids.
I look forward to participating in the group discussions.

In view of the political uprising in Egypt, Tuniesia, Yemen, Greece and other countries, due to an urgent need to help the movement follow the right direction, in order to prevent the fight for freedom be interrupted again, My book The Little Black Fish, banned in its country of origin (Iran) is a guide to action and shows a path to equality, freedom and justice.
It is about setting up a goal, raising awareness, making connections, getting organized and following the struggle until the goal has been reached.
I would appreciate any assistance to help get the message across.

Velvet Ball and The Broken Fairy. I'm going to get a copy as soon as I can (next pay period- :(O ).

Rick, that's so kind of you. I'll do that. I have three series going and all will have multiple books. Plus I'm writing a book on how to have an elderly guinea pig. (They don't have to die young if they're cared for properly.)

I'm hoping to take that book to schools to educate children about caring for guinea pigs and rabbits - not leaving them outside in heatwaves and cold weather, and much more.

That's funny that your kindle broke in bed. Hahah. I once fell asleep with my glasses on while reading. When I woke, they were bent and broken and hanging off one ear. Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 57 comments Rick wrote: "excellent! I had several guinea pigs growing up- and I wished that they lived longer! a great service!..."

Yay! another guinea pig lover.

Rick, I lost two guinea pigs to bad treatment given by ignorant vets. I did some research and it helped me to save my remaining one. Now he's eight-years-old, and healthy. (Lives in a little wooden house in our lounge room, as did all my guinea pigs.) They can live for ten years if they're watched and pampered.

There's a fantastic American guinea pig website called GuineaLinx where I found all the information I needed about health and care. The main thing is to seek out an exotics vet when things go wrong. (Usually it's just their molars that need filing or it could be bladder stones, and they are fixable, though there are so many other ailments too.)

Guinea pigs are the most beautiful little creatures in the world. And they smell so lovely - babies forever.

Ellen (elliearcher) I feel a little different. When I was young (like childhood, teens and twenties) I devoured everything. Good, bad, indifferent, I didn't care. Junk food, salad, broccoli-any reading was good reading. Toothpaste ingredients. You get the picture.
Now I feel the pressure of time. So it's not so much whether I love different kinds of book but I feel less open-hearted than I was. Actually, I have found goodreads a kind of "remedy" for that-it's opened me out again to many more kinds of books. I think I also got tired of trying to "dialogue" about books by myself.
Kind of not possible.
So I'm grateful to all of you for being there & helping me open up again.

Carmel, you must have looked after them well for them to live to eight. Bless you. My mother-in-law's little fellow lived to ten, but that's unusual. They say the average age is seven, but I now believe they can live longer if they get proper help when needed.

Love the names of yours. My boar is called Boofhead and he's nearly blind, but manages to get around. The other two were Teddybear and Beanie, who both died at the age of three. It broke out hearts. Teddy was the first one to die after a wrong diagnosis from a vet. (I didn't have a computer then and hadn't researched guinea pigs on the net, just had booklets from pet shops with wrong information in them.)

I actually had bought Teddy and Boofhead, who were being sold in a rural supplies shop for pet food, mainly snakes.) Then I bought Beanie as a baby after Teddy died because Boofhead was fretting, so were we. He was the most beautiful and sweet little thing. He ran around the house like a little dog and came squealing out of his house in our lounge room every morning for tomato. If he ever smelled tomato, he would popcorn and squeal his head off.

He must have been an inbred as he was much smaller than most piggies and his molars needed filing every 18 months, which we had done with an exotics vet 300 miles away, but one Christmas when the vet was closed, Beanie stopped eating and we knew his teeth needed filing again. (Some vets in my country don't even know about guinea pigs teeth, then misdiagnose them and then they die.) I took Beanie to a local vet and asked him if he’d ever planed a guinea pig’s molars before. He said he had, but I waited there for him. (The rotter didn’t have any equipment and planed his teeth with a bastard file, taking the top of his tongue off and causing permanent nerve damage to his jaw, plus he never gave him any painkillers and used far too much anesthethetic.) I had to hand feed him for months after that, and then the exotics vet planed his teeth properly, but Beanie was never able to eat by himself again and he was in so much pain and depressed. I was advised it was cruel keeping him alive. It broke out hearts and he’s now in our flower garden with Teddy underneath a cherry tomato bush.

And to think I have to speak to that rotten vet sometimes as I’m a member of a wildlife rescue charity and we deal with all areas for miles around. (I'm writing a children's book about this too, as fiction. Ity will be my only kids story with a sad ending.)

I’m glad you little fellows had a long life, Carmel. That makes me feel happy.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments I used to have guinea pigs, lovely little things. The last one we had used to vanish from it's hutch every night. It took about a week to figure it out, I thought one of the kids was sneaking it in to bed. No, it was climbing over the partition to join the rabbit in the other half of a 'posh' large hutch my Dad had made for me when I was a kiddie. I think the guinea pig did it because it was lonely rather than for the warmth under the rabbit! We gave up in the end and left the partition door open, and miss bunny and mr guinea pig lived happily for several years co-habiting! From memory they used to live 6 to 8 years, females longer than males. It's the same with our cats, we've had at least one reach 20 and a couple of others the late teens. The 'boys' do well to get into the lower teens.

Timothy, that is so cute. Yes, guinea pigs are very social and love company. Our Boofhead loves cuddles all the time and my husband takes him outside with him when he's working in his veggie garden. He loves that.

You should write a kids book about your guinea pig and rabbit, Timothy. That would be wonderful.

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Patricia,
if you grow your own veg. check out my latest book 'Beyond the Potting Shed' it could make life a lot easier in the garden and save you loads of money. I wrote it under my real name :-Paul Rix.
The hints and tips apply anywhere, if you grow veggies or fruit, it will help.
As for the kiddies book, well why not, I've got to finish the follow up to 'The Day the Ravens Died' my current thriller and re-write 'Ro' my first published book.
I've just remembered 'Goldie' my first guinea pig used to spend hours in the hood of my old duffel coat when I was a kid. We had two black and white scruffy looking little ones Pip and Squeak, one of them used to get in my shirt pocket and sit there for hours with it's head out. I must have been about ten at the time. Miss Handbury, the head teacher at our village school sent me home one morning as pip or squeak had escaped and was terrorising her old dog patch by trying to get under her as she lay in front of the fire [the dog, not the teacher!]. Wonderful memories of a long ago child hood in a little village of about 200 people in the wilds of Norfolk

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 57 comments Tim, Paul. I'll check out your gardening book for sure.

You should write a story about guinea pigs as a children's fiction.

I've written a story similar to your tale about a little girl who takes a bush rat to school and it gets out in the classroom and terrorises the class. I'll be publishing that soon.

is it true that wood shavings are not the best material to use for flooring? I mean the scented cedar shavings they sell ??

message 2050: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments Hi Rick,
I was always told use hard wood shavings, beech silver birch etc. Ours always had a lump of hawthorn to gnaw on, I can't recall any of the many we've had over the years having problems with their teeth. I seem to remember being told the resins in conifer wood was bad for them, and that sounds right as only a few specialised animals actually eat conifers from choice
