Kim Knox (kimknox) I think I became a fan from watching the Gainsborough films - no I'm not that old, lol - and The Seventh Veil.

I'm looking forward to some lively discussions here!

Hi all and thank you Rick for inviting me. I'm from India, currently in New Jersey.

Was skimming some of the posts here and found a lot of interesting new names (authors), which is what I love about Goodreads...you do get to read something 'good'!

Since I grew up reading Enid Blyton's she'll forever remain my favourite British author. Jeffery Archer is always a fun quick read and the poems of Wordsworth are my favorites.Love Somerset Maugham too.

Hope to keep up with the wonderful array of topics here as I keep reading and posting reviews.

message 606: by astrangerhere (new)

astrangerhere I'm Ash, a corporate attorney in the bluest peice of heaven. This is also known as Chapel Hill to the outside world. I read almost constantly unless work takes me away from it. I'm coming off a month long absence from goodreads due to a lawsuit that had me working 15 hour days. But enough unpleasantry...

My undergraduate and masters degrees are both in literature. I studied primarily Shakespeare, Milton and their contemporaries in undergraduate and shifted to literature of the American South in graduate school. I love Faulkner, Austen, Wilde, and your standard lineup of other classics. I enjoy reading most genres, save for paranormal, young adult (blech!), and romance.

I just had my five year anniversary with the love of my life, and if you ask me about her, you'll likely not shut me up for days. Glad to be here :)

Melita (prodigalofblue) | 2 comments Aloha...Thanks for the invite Rick. I do believe I'm in the right group. ;D

Like astrangerhere my undergraduate and masters degree are in literature...and what do you do with that besides be a corporate attorney? you become a high school English teacher...(I think I hear all your sighs of pity.)

I'm a literature fanatic, the literary and the no-so-literary ones, but my loves are Classics and contemporary fiction and poetry.

I look forward to meeting some people over cyberspace and talking about books...being on an island in the middle of the pacific, this venue is a godsend.

Hillamonster | 51 comments Hi there! I am Hillary, 23, from Minneapolis.

I'm a big fan of mysteries, family sagas, coming of age stories, children and young adult novels, dystopian fiction, gothic victorian, graphic novels, books that make me cry, books with a circus setting, books with a twist that I NEVER saw coming, and most classics.

If you have any recommendations, bring it on!

Somethings that you should know about me:

I love cats, knitting, watching Star Trek with the BF, coffee, The Cure, The Babysitter's Club, David Bowie, and "The Shining" is my "comfort" movie.

message 611: by Alan (new)

Alan (coachmt) | 23 comments Any particular "brand" of Star Trek Hillary or all of it?

And welcome to the group!

Less interested in Original Star Trek, although I have seen many of the "famous" and "good" episodes. I am in love with William Shatner (his music and in Boston Legal) and I have seen all the Original Star Trek movies. We started with Next Gen, we are half through DS9, and just started Voyager! I hear that Enterprise is less good, but I like Scott Bakula (especially in Quantum Leap), so I don't think it'll be an issue!

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 145 comments HI Hillamonster,
We share two things, cats, I have 3 and Bowie, who is I suppose a cool cat of sorts!
I,m always plugging books from friends, when they are good enough, You like books where you don't see things coming!? try mine! you'll see something is coming but it might not be what you expected. I write under the name 'Timothy Pilgrim' check out 'The Day the Ravens Died' I,m not quite sure how you would descibe it, it's a terrorist thriller of sorts, If you don't want to buy the paperback you can get it as an ebook from Authors on Line, you can read the first chapter free on the same site, it won't give you much of a clue about the rest of the book. Enough of the commercial, welcome to the site, this thread certainly had a diverse membership. Great!!
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer:]

message 619: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) Rick just invited me to join this group and I must say it looks fascinating and seems to have a lot of intelligent and creative members. I found Goodreads in December last year and have been active since then. Been an avid reader all my life, and I've found so many friends and good books to read here. So nice to have others who are interested in reading! Most of my family is only sporadically interested and practically none of my friends.

I'm semi-retired, work as a psychotherapist, have two grown children and three grandchildren, three little yappy dogs, and generally live a pretty quiet life these days.

Nice to be amongst such interesting people.

Currently my favorite genre is fantasy, but I also love English literature, Southern writers, writers of mystery and thrillers. I'm engrossed at this time in Janny Wurts and her Mistwraith series, but also love Carol Berg, Charlaine Harris, J.K. Rowling, Dorothy Dunnett, George R.R. Martin, Charles Frazier, Barbara Kingsolver, and I could go on and on.

Looking forward to some lively discussions.

subterraneanhomesickalien | 1 comments I have been an avid reader all my life, and my favorite writers are Vladimir Nabokov, Virginia Woolf, Kurt Vonnegut and Marcel Proust. My hobbies include, but are not limited to, playing piano, painting, writing, drawing portraits on my etche-e-sketch, and drinking most men under the table without them even knowing it. This summer while on break from college, I plan to work on the memoir I started, most of which is posted on my page. It's called Drunkalogues of a Stay-at-Home Actress.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) Wow lots of new members since I dropped by this thread! Welcome to all.

message 626: by Sara (new)

Sara Hello everyone, I am new to the group. I have gone through periods in my life when I have read tons and then backed off for awhile, then read books upon books again. Last year I set a goal for myself to read 25 books, and I read 30, so this year I am reading 40. I am in my 20th book right now, an Anita Shreve novel.

Having read so much last year really helped me identify what my favorite plotlines are: I am really interested in wartime fiction, unrequited love, and dealing with tragedy. My mom has been a great reference source for me and recommends many books that I end up loving. I can't stand too much fantasy or otherworldliness in novels. Not a fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez et al.

My favorite book from this year was Chang-Rae Lee's "The Surrendered."

Other than reading I actually enjoy my job-I work from home for a large company as a project manager and I am an engineer by education. I have two gorgeous dachshunds and a husband who works in finance but doesn't read!
