message 5129: by Neil (new)

Neil (neillow) | 2 comments My name is Neil Low, and I am the author of five noir murder mystery novels set in 1940s Seattle, WA (where I am a police captain). I am a big fan of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, who have greatly influenced my style. I chose to write about a "coming of age" detective, because I wanted to show the world in THICK AS THIEVES how a "soft boiled" gum shoe becomes a "hard boiled" detective, a term so often heard in reference to Chandler's Philip Marlow and Hammett's Sam Spade. Instead of wallowing in grief at the loss of his father at the hands of corrupt police officials, Alan Stewart sets out on a course of revenge, and while at it he delves into the "Crime of the Century," the kidapping of the Lindbergh baby. I followed THIEVES with SIGN OF THE DRAGON, UNREASONABLE PERSUASION, and UNHOLY ALLIANCE. My fifth novel is with the publisher, and we are deciding on a title at this writing. As you read my novels you'll see Alan's growth as he matures and toughens up. In that respect I suppose he is a lot like the wonderful Harry Potter, only with a strong libido and a Colt .45 on his hip. Alan soon becomes a student of life, partnering up with the very sexy Vera Deward, who has surprising talents of her own. Although more mature than Alan, there is a strong attraction between the two detectives, and they prove to be a very effective team. The police department relies on them for help with cases they have been ordered to leave along. All of my stories have a strong and accurate historical bases to them, and my laterst, UNHOLY ALLIANCE, deals with the real murder of a Seattle Police officer during the Prohibition Era. I read this old case while serving as the Department's Homicide Commander a few years back and decided it had been grossly mishandled 90 years before. The captain in that era ruled the officer's death a suicide, despite the fact he was shot twice in the face. I believe my fictionlaized handling of the story realistically portrays what might have actually have happened, complete with brothels and corruption. My favorite novel is Harper Lee's TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, and I generally love literature. I've also read everything by William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Toni Morrion, and many others. However, as I mentioned, I also love and write noir murder mysteries. So in addition to Hammett and Chandler, I also quite enjoy James Elroy. My current favorite is Michael Connelly, because he captures courtroom drama as I have personally experienced it, while telling a very clever yarn. My wife's family is from Britain, and we try to stay caught up. Together we are enjoying watching Downton Abbie on Masterpiece Theater, and we're loving it very much. I look forward to reading others' posts, and as a police expert and lecturer, I'm quite willing to share my opinions on police procedures--at least the American ones. I don't know all the answers, but if I have a question that stumps me, I know who to ask to get an answer. Thank you! I am on Facebook and Twitter @TheMasterThief and my website is: http://neillow.com

Ben Portus (BenPortus) | 2 comments Thank you Rick for the invitation and hello to everyone in the group. My name is Ben Portus. I'm an avid reader and debut author of The Last Ark, released as an ebook in May 2012. You can see my goodreads author profile at http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...

The author's I love are a varied bunch. Because I write young adult fiction I read a lot of it: Ally Kennen is superb (Bullet Boys, Beast, Berserk etc), Anthony Horowitz, Charlie Higson and Michael Grant are other favourites of mine. I also read a lot of literary fiction and political / anti-war non-fiction.

The Last Ark is an exciting, page turning adventure story aimed at young adult readers, but suitable for anyone aged 10+ including adults. The reviews for it on Amazon have been excellent and I'm delighted with how well it has been received. I'm currently writing the sequel, due out May 2013. Please feel free to read the reviews and 'look inside' to read the first two chapters free at www.amazon.co.uk/The-Last-Ark-ebook/d...

Happy reading everyone!

Ben.

This is an invitation, for all of you, to join my new group called... Time is ticking, books are publishing! In my group (Which I just created) We get to read books on or own (I know, not being rushed to read a book) and we then post a discussion all about the book (how we felt, predictions for the series and so forth) I just started to invite members and have more than one opinion on the books. Don't worry! I'm probably going to make list of books (or make a poll) for at last 5-7 choices of books to read! Don't be rushed to read them all!!!! And if you don't want to see the spoilers, just don't look at the discussions on the book until you've finished or your comfortable to. If you already read the book, start a discussion then people would finish reading the book and start to post thoughts on the discussion that they thought of. I've put a lot of thought into it (LOL) for my members to not be rushed and to feel comfortable :) The first list of books I was thinking of for the members to think of reading was... Marked (#1), Vampire Academy (#1), Blood Red Road, The Immortal Rules, Wither, Intertwined, Angelfire, The Iron King, Daughter of Smoke and Fire, Hush Hush, and Cinder. If anyone has anymore suggestions they could email me.. and i would add that to the list! Hope you join and have a blast! HAPPY READING :)
