D Just out of curiosity, how often do you read? Do you make time every day, say for a half hour or an hour before you go to sleep? Do you read a la Rory Gilmore, carrying a book with you everywhere you go? Maybe you don't read during the week because of school, but spend hours devouring a book over the weekend? Do tell!

When I was in college I pretty much gave up reading for fun during the school year, then tried to make up for it over my summer/winter breaks. Now that I've graduated I'm back to reading pretty much every day. I don't have a set time of reading, but I always read at least a chapter before bed (plus whatever I can during the day). If I'm watching TV I read during commercials, and I'll read in the car when I'm not the one driving.

I read pretty much anytime I can. I always have a book or two in my person. My boyfriend laughs at me because before I buy a new purse I always do what he calls "the book test" to make sure they can fit. I try to read an hour before I go to bed as well just to wind down.

message 3: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Not often enough.
But really, whenever I get the time and I'm not too tired to exert the mental effort.
Which translates to not often enough.

message 4: by Drew (new)

Drew Wilson (drewhamilton) I try to get in as much as I can, but school often times over rides my reading time. I, at least, always have 2 books with me at all times. One on iPod and a physical book. I also have a few in my car if I ever get somewhere a little early.

message 5: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I read whenever I can as well. I bring a book with me everywhere just in case the opportunity to read presents itself. I usually read on my lunchbreak at work and try to read a bit before bed every night. I occasionally take the train to work which also gives me a good chunk of reading time. At work I keep an e-book on my computer to read during down time (shhh, don't tell my boss). It helps make my day more bearable.

I do the commercial break thing too, it drives my whole family insane. They will start laughing or talking about how stupid the commercial was, and I of course hadn't watched it, so I don't know what they are talking about. :)

message 7: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Anytime I'm not in school, I read nonstop. I've been doing better this school year though, I get reading in when I can or when I need a break from my work. I also have some downtime in between classes that's not long enough to get any substantial work done but is just right to do some reading :) Oh, and I definitely do the Rory--I have a book with me everywhere I go...it's true--you never know when you'll need one!

message 8: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I take a book with me everywhere. I also usually listen to an audio book when I'm driving. I don't always have time to read during the day, but I always read before I go to sleep at night.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

not too often, but i do read, sometimes....

message 10: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I'm like Rory Gilmore, I read everywhere. I feel weird if I'm not carrying a book with me out and about. I read any time I have a free moment ,that's not taken up by conversations or walking around campus (far too many turns and hills to read while walking).

message 11: by Jen (new)

Jen (wishesandwanderlust) | 696 comments I usually take a book with me everywhere, unless I know I will not have an opportunity to read it. But I always have a book with me for the waiting room at doctor appointments! I have yet to try audiobooks, but I'm picking one up at the library tomorrow.

I try to read a little bit everyday, some days I read a lot and other days I won't even touch the a book I'm reading. But it also depends on how engrossed in the story I am. If it's a so-so book then I might choose to watch an hour of tv over an hour of reading, but if it's a book I can't put down then I will skip tv (and maybe even sacrifice sleep!)

message 12: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I read everyday: usually for 15 minutes in the morning before work, whenever my boyfriend is driving us somewhere and it's still light out, or when I go outside to smoke. There are some other random times, but those are the constants.

message 13: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I make time to read for an hour before bed, unless I'm doing something (like watching baseball). Other than that, I carry a book with me everywhere and read whenever I can. Before class is a prime opportunity, until people show up. From time to time, I'll pick one of the weekend nights and make that reading night.

message 14: by Jessie (new)

Jessie (Jessie08) | 128 comments I'm in my first year of college right now, and since starting I haven't had much time to read at all. I think since beginning college I think I've only read two books! I just can't seem to make time for it anymore. I'm very excited for my long Christmas break to catch up on some reading!

message 15: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 188 comments I guess it all depends on how much time I have. Do I have homework, projects, work, cleaning, or hanging out with friends and family? If I do have time, I can read for hours at a time, sometimes I even forget to eat or drink anythimg because I am so into the book. Other times when I want to read a book, I have to read a book that I have to read for one of my classes. Sometimes the book turns out okay, but other times it doesn't.

I just finished reading Bowery Girland it was not a good book but I had to read it for one of my classes. We are making a comparison of two books Bowery Girl and The Bluest Eye at least I am looking forward to reading the Bluest Eye.

message 16: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I hate it whenever I'm reading in public or before class and someone will come up to me and ask what I'm doing. Anyone else experience that?

message 17: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 188 comments Yea, I hate it when people do that. They see that you are reading and then they start talking to you knowing that you are reading. Hello, can't you see the book in front of my face? I also hate it when I am at home in my room reading and my sister comes in and starts to talk on the phone loudly with loud laughter with her friends. God I hate it.

message 18: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 604 comments I take a book with me everywhere I go too, so that if I have an hour between classes or 10 to 20 minutes before I have to be somewhere I can get in some reading. I always read right before I go to bed. That's a habit I got into years ago. I don't know if I'd be able to fall asleep now if I don't read at least a chapter. However, a lot of the time I will get so into the book I'm reading that I don't usually turn out the light until 3am. I haven't got more than 5 hrs sleep on school nights for weeks. Oh well, I definitely make it up on the weekends :)

Jessie, in my first year of college, I never had time to read for pleasure either. I think I only read about 3 nonschool books that whole year.

message 19: by MacKenzie (new)

MacKenzie I always read before I go to bed, no matter how late or tired I am. I usually squeeze as much as I can in until I can't keep my eyes open any longer. Which on some nights is only one or two pages... :) I'm also a nanny, so I make sure to have a book on me at all times. When the kids are watching a movie or playing with friends at the park, reading is a great time killer.

message 20: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I read any chance I get. I do hate it when events or things keep me from reading. For example, past couple of months, my mom and I have been helping him empty out his house and that took up a lot of time. Also I've been busy with midterms. I cannot wait until fall quarter is over. I can then relax and catch up on my reading.

message 21: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Adriana, One of these days, I will snap and just royally tell off someone who asks me that. Maybe I'll throw something at them. Not my book though, because then I'll have to go get my book.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
MacKenzie..I did the SAME thing when I used to nanny. I would get some good reading time in depending on which children I had and what time of day it was. I loved when they went to bed so I could read!

message 23: by MacKenzie (new)

MacKenzie SERIOUSLY, Jamie. There is nothing better than getting paid to read! :P

message 24: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments Oh man, I need to get a nanny job then! I did that for awhile actually, and I basically got paid to do my homework. It was nice.

message 25: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments Sometimes I think I spend too much time talking about how much I love reading, finding new books, or arranging my bookshelf, than actually reading. It's so sad!

Jessie (Jessie08) | 128 comments Kelly wrote: "Sometimes I think I spend too much time talking about how much I love reading, finding new books, or arranging my bookshelf, than actually reading. It's so sad!"

Kelly I totally agree! I feel like if I didn't spend so much time on Goodreads or looking around book stores, I could actually have some time to..well...read!

message 27: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Agreed Kelly and Jessie! I'm always on here or looking at new books that I neglect reading sometimes.

message 28: by Emily (new)

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I do that too. The internet steals my reading time like crazy, though sometimes I think it's because I'm too mentally tired for reading and I just want to space out on the internet, you know?

message 29: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie | 58 comments I usually keep a novel in my purse for when I have long waits/sitting on the train.
I'm in my last month before law school finals, so the only thing I read now is law.
I'll have a better answer in a month! :)

message 30: by Matthew (new)

Matthew I always have a book (or 6) on me, so I read every chance I get (when not on the internet), call it a minimum of 50 pages a day.

message 31: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (strangeaslife) Like a lot of you, I usually keep at least one book on me at all times, in case it comes up while I'm out an about that I have an opportunity to read (which actually doesn't happen that often... but you never know!).

I'll read during TV commercial breaks like some of you mentioned. I read every night before bead. During my lunch breaks at work, and at home, and during breakfast at home (which I'm trying to stop doing because I'm trying to learn to "do one thing at a time"). I like to read on the toilet. :) I usually have a book in my bathroom drawer that takes me forever to finish because I only read it for a few seconds every day while I'm on the toilet. lol. I've read in the shower...!

I generally don't read during the school year. If I allow myself to start, it's hard to stop. I'll quickly end up reading 3 books "for myself" in addition to the 6 or so books I need to be reading for classes, which doesn't make for very good grades!

Overall, all added up... I get a good few hours of reading in every week. It also varies depending on what book I'm reading. If I love it, I'll read 5, 6, 7, 9 hours in one day and finish it quickly. If I'm not wild about it... I'll read for 30 minutes a day.

message 32: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Wow, you read in the shower? How did you manage that?

message 33: by Adrianna (new)

Adrianna Grezak (adriannagrezak) During the school year I try to read before bed because it helps me fall asleep and remember that there's more to life than college. However, then it takes me forever to finish the books since I only get 20 pages in before I doze off.

Summer is a different story because I try to read 1-2 hours on a daily basis. If the book is very gripping, I'll read longer.

I also try to read during my lunch breaks at work, but usually end up chatting with whoever entered the break room.

Olivia (strangeaslife) Kimberly wrote: "Wow, you read in the shower? How did you manage that?"

I've downloaded some novellas, short stories and essays in PDF format and printed them out. A couple times, while reading the ones I *really* could not put down, I slipped the pages in a plastic sheet protector, like the ones you use in binders, and took it in the shower with me! I just propped it up on the wall where I keep my face soap. Scrub & read! :P

message 35: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments The days I go to uni (four days a week), it takes me 2.5-3 hours of train rides to get there. That's my prime reading time, either for pleasure or for class. I also need to read before I go to bed. Mostly that makes for something like 100 pages per day, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on how much I've got to do for school, whether I meet someone I know on the train... If I don't read an actual published book, I read fanfiction on the internet. I always carry a book with me - there's a definite upside to living in a big city and not owning a car! I spend way too much time on public transport to not spend it reading :D

message 36: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) I wish I could read while riding in a car, plane, or train, but I get so motion sick that it's not even possible for me. I could have all these extra opportunities to get some pages read!

I do read during the school year, mostly because it keeps me sane and gives me something to do before I go to bed that isn't studying or worrying about what I should be doing for the rest of the week.

I usually carry my iPod/nook with me when I go out in case there's time to read. I'll bring a real book if I know I'll be waiting at a doctor's office or something, but I don't like to just tote them around because I'm really protective of my books.

message 37: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I keep a book in my purse at all times. Usually the one I'm currently reading so I'm constantly putting it in and taking it out. My iphone is broke right now, but when I get a new one, I'm always reading on the kindle for iphone app EVERYWHERE. I sneak in some at work too.

message 38: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments I wish I could read more then I do. I usually read for an hour or two before bed. I try to read during the day, but I usually get interrupted and end up rereading it that night. The only other time I read is in between classes when I've got a huge break. I do keep the book I'm reading with me all the time. I think it's a comfort thing, and if I need it it's there!

message 39: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
The whole reading in the shower just gave me a great idea! Have any of you seen the TV screens in the bathroom mirrors? I wonder if there is some way to put one in the shower. That way, you could upload ebooks onto the television screen. Probably not a great idea. We will all take way too long showers. There will be a water shortage and we will all be pruny.

message 40: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments haha maybe audio books in the shower would be a better way to go, otherwise I'd take a 5 hour shower.

message 41: by Silvia (last edited Jun 14, 2010 08:56AM) (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Olivia! You are a very dedicated reader!!! Your post made me smile.

I wish to read more than I do.

I always read for about 40 minutes before hitting the bed, at school before class starts (it's a way to save from the akwardness of talking to strange people)I also use reading as a studying tactic. I will read from a school book for 30 minutes, and then reward myself from reading what I call my "fun book" (whatever novel/memoir I am reading at that time.

message 42: by Jess (new)

Jess In college I rarely read during the academic year—except for senior year, when I took classes that had long research projects instead of weekly assignments/readings. I got a ton of reading done!

Right now I'm in the interim period between college and grad school (and working part-time), so I have lots of time to read! I usually have at least one book on me at all times, though it depends on its length. For example, today I brought two books (I was halfway done with one and hadn't started the other). Because I take the bus to and from work (two buses actually), I'm constantly waiting at bus stops, so having a book or two is essential!

It's been so quiet at work today that with waiting for the bus and then sitting at my desk I finished the first book and read all of the second. I lucked out! Now I just have to hope I find something to do because I'm now out of books, haha.

message 43: by Nikki (new)

Nikki I read about every evening. I can't read during the day every time I have a couple minutes to spare, I need time to get into the story and I hate having to stop reading mid chapter or when it's just getting good.

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I read almost everyday. Its like a drug. Or like mountain dews. LOL
