As I said my editors suggested that I write in the Viking time period, but I was very happy to as my maternal grandfather was half Swedish and half Norwegian. In fact the Norwegian side were Liesons or Children of the Light after the legend about a young girl being found alive in a valley with her grandmother while all around were dead of the plague. The knight who found her fell in love with her and they eventually married.
When I was little my maternal grandfather gave my brother and me a wonderfully illustrated book of Scandanavian Fairy Tales. My favourite tale was how the King of Sweden captured a Princess of Norway. Anway, there was this fantastic picture of a rugged dark haired warrior on a while horse holding a maiden. When my editors mentioned Vikings, I knew what I had to wrtie.
My sister speaks fluent Norwegian and graduated from the University of Oslo. So I was under orders not to write the typical Viking warrior stories as she thought they short changed the period. Luckily for sibling harmony, I think she likes my books.
So yes, I do feel a connection and hope that my books will inspire people, particularly those of Scandanavian descent to investigate the period.
