This has been driving me nuts for a couple of days. I really enjoyed a YA novel back in the late 70s/Early 80s. I'm trying to remember the title so that I can purchase it for my friend's daughter.
I think I read it when I was 7 or 8, but the target age range was probably a little older; maybe grade 4-6?
The basic plot is that two boys from our world that hate each other are transported to a parallel world. The summoner(s) was trying to call up a legendary hero to save their world and is taken aback when he sees two pre-teen boys instead of one grown man.
The boys are forced to work together to prevent the destruction of that world by a force/villain that sounded like something out of Norse mythology. The two boys eventually become friends and in the culmination of the book merge together to become the prophesied hero.
One of the boys is named Jess; I think the other one was Rich or Rick.
The title is something like 'The Hero of [place name]' or 'The Hero from [place name]' where [place name] is the parallel word's name for our world. Everwhere? Neverwhere? Something close to that. I tried Googling a bunch of combinations, but couldn't seem to find it.
