Kayla | 150 comments Book 47: A City of Ghosts: Stories by Betsy Phillips

I won this book from goodreads giveaways. It was alright. I enjoyed some of the stories, especially the October ones, but there were a few in the book that were nothing special. I was surprised by how short the stories were too. Many were only around 1 to 2 pages.

Kayla | 150 comments Book 48: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

This was a reread. I really enjoyed this book. Huxley created such an interesting world with ideas and advanced science practices that are still hot topics today, not to mention what they were in the 30s when this book was first published.

Kayla | 150 comments Book 49: The Vanishing of Katharina Linden by Helen Grant

This was a nice, fun read. I loved the German setting and the German words that were occassionally thrown in. I never really considered it a horror/thriller novel except for maybe in the last 20-25 pages. For the most part, it was actually quite charming.

I read this book in two days. I think Ever is a great character. I liked her better than Bella because she didn't let her entire life revolve around Damen. She was her own person.

Kayla | 150 comments Book 51: The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

I liked the world created in this book but I disliked the main character Mary, so that really affected how much I liked this book overall. According to the reviews of the second book in this series, the heroine of that book (Gabry, Mary's daughter) is more likeable, so I may read it someday.

Kayla | 150 comments Book 52: The Road by Cormac McCarthy

This was a reread and I ended up rating it one star higher this time. I thought this novel was so brilliant. I never wanted to put it down.

When I first read it, I was turned off by the grayish, barren environment and the matter-of-fact narration. I was also often confused about whether or not it was the man or the boy who was speaking since there were never any quotations. I was always able to figure it out because the boy would either ask a bunch of questions in a row or say I'm scared in every conversation, without fail. That annoyed me during my first reading, but this time I was able to understand everything so much better and I understood the importance of these writing techniques and the unstructured dialogue.

Kayla | 150 comments Book 53: The Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine

This is the first book I've read by her since Ella Enchanted (which is one of my top ten favorites). It was so great to be back in Levine's world and to read about ogres and dragons and spectres. Though I didn't love it quite as much EE, I did really enjoy it.

Kayla | 150 comments I was hoping to finish The Handmaid's Tale by tonight, but that's not going to happen. Oh, well. I surpassed my goal by 13 books and I completed the A-Z Title Challenge!
